Honest curiosity here: What is there to like about Stardust Memory? Other than MS design? You're not the first person to say you like it, and I want to know if I'm missing something. The Albion has the most relentlessly boring and unlikable crew from Kou, to the captain, to all the pilots, all the way down. And then you add Nina to the mix, and it becomes difficult for me even to just sit through it. Nobody's relatable, nobody's sympathetic. Compared to them, even the crew of the Minerva all look like super-interesting A+ winners. And the Zeon aren't any better, outside of Gato. I guess Cima is kind of entertaining as an over-the-top campy mustache-twirling villain, but she's so silly, it's hard to care.

Then the love triangle out of nowhere, 13 episodes into a 13-episode OVA :thumbdown  ) as if they suddenly realized the series was completely devoid of human emotion and decided late was better than never.

    What am I missing here?

To be fair, I thought Zeta was overhyped as well when I first watched the series (which was after the movies though, so I still did have a sour taste in my mouth), but I felt the show just took off after they left Amuro and gang, and it was in the last 10 episodes that the series became my second favorite Gundam series of all time.

The reason I like 0083 is because of its ending.

When Kou reunites with the woman who betrayed him and let him go to prison? That ending is so weird to me. It makes it seem like Kou hasn't grown at all during the series, and that he's the same spineless shlub with no personality that he began as.

The ending was the only part i really couldn't stand. The bitch basically chose gato over him except gato was all about the mission.

Besides the mecha, i generally like it because its not a show where everyone has crazy powers that enable them to fight. Kou basically got by putting his all into every fight. Besides that, the animation was awesome, one of my favorite scenes is Kou and the one armed guy working on the MA.

Yeah, the animation was good. I have to give it that. But good animation can't make up for a missing story.

No, when Gato launched the nuke on Al Boa Q, which causes the kick ass scene where the Titans are announced.

I actually hated Nina to death and wish she had died.

I don't know anyone who didn't. But she's a majority of the OVA. Almost everything that happens involves her somehow. She's the worst.

0083 is extremely polarizing to me. The most I can say I enjoy about it are the battle tactics, mecha designs, and MS combat, since, as I mentioned earlier, I'm not too big on how everything beyond this point scales up. As for the characters, I could care less for most of them, especially when it all came down to that miserable love triangle that really should not have been a thing at all, and the few characters I could have potentially have empathy for died in pathetic and stupid ways.
Gundam Wing on the whole is a bastion for some of the worst characters in the Gundam Universe. Seriously... what the hell was anyone DOING in that show?!

Coordinators aren't a race. They genetically engineered themselves. Flay was bigoted and a contemptible bitch, but at least she had some personality and recognizably human motivations for her ugliness. Which makes her a better character than Nina.

Relena was naive and grating, but nowhere near as grating as Nina. Plus, Relena's incessant death wish is at least amusing.

Quess is close. Maybe the closest. But I still think Nina is worse.

I don't think Nina is as bad as you say, but for the most part I find her entirely forgettable up until the end of things. I found nothing amusing about Relena at all, if for all her hopelessness she actually DID die, then maybe her character would amount to something, but then again the same could be said for just about any of the main characters in that series, and in the end Trieze was the only one who ended up dead for all of it, and he had to basically commit suicide outright to do so!

Honestly, I felt both the original anime and zeta's dub were pretty good. Maybe I just have low standards for dubs though, because i'm new to anime. My only problems were a few too many instances of "Oh" or other space filling sounds, and Kamille's voice

Also guys, because I've only seen the original, zeta, and now 0080, I'd appreciate it if you didn't post any spoilers for my sake. I don't mind the conversation branching to other things, but please keep spoilery information to the main gundam thread (As I think there is one?). This isn't to anyone in particular (I can't tell whats a spoiler till I've seen it in the show), but some of the things said sounded a bit spoilery.

I also dislike Zeta Gundam immensely and Yoshiyuki Tomino in general. Zeta Gundam should be something I like with it's dark mecha setting but it just does not do it for me at all, I find his characters are almost completely unlikable and character relationships are kinda ridiculous (especially when they get into the whole Cyber-Newtype shit).

I used to be big into Gundam back in the day but my opinion of the franchise as a whole has definitely swung more negative in recent years, especially after being exposed to other classic 80's mecha show like VOTOMS. For me these days the only Gundam I can actually look back on and enjoy are those original Gundam movie's and OAV's like 0080 and 83.

And yes I do still love 0083 as for all it's plot and character silliness it's still some of the best giant robot action put into animation :p
