You might need to disperse that light - looks a bit strong such that it's glaring off the plastic.

Also don't forget to reset white balance:)

Yep the LED lamp I bought isn't any good for what I"m trying to do I've realized, though it might have some special case uses in the future. So I'm going to get another regular lamp at a later date.

My camera seems to kinda suck as far as white balance goes, I either get fuzzy dark out of focus distorted pictures when I set it to fluorescent mode or I get the flickering screen effect when I set it to normal. I dunno how to fix that so I need to replace my older fluorescent with a less bright/less focused non fluorescent I think.

So I set up my very first lightbox today (one of them 60cm cube kits with 3 lights from eBay).

I took a few shots (messing around with ISO, and custom white balance) and this was the only 'reasonable' macro shot I got so far...

Any suggestions on how to improve the shot would be much appreciated. In particular I can't seem to work out what shutter speed and aperture I should be using...

Oh and anyone with suggestions on how to smooth out them damn non-reflective backdrops please share as well. I spent 20min steam ironing that under a tea towel and it still looks like ass... :sly:

Not bad. It takes time, not a bad shot. Can you flatten that background with an iron or something?

If you use a lower ƒ-stop (somewhere in the 4s or 5s) the background should be blurry enough it doesn't matter if it's wrinkly.

If you get a DSLR, you can use custom white balance ( that's where I take a picture of a white piece of paper under the lighting conditions I'm shooting in and calibrate WB to that). Or you can buy one of those white balance caps.

That made the most difference to my photography. Don't use pre-set white balances - most look like crap as you found...

you can also shoot in RAW and worry about the white balance after the fact.
