True enough, but with the toon often not having much of a height difference between carbots and larger characters I still don't think that works in the Masterpiece line (where the difference has had to be defined in real terms). We often saw carbots going hand-to-hand with seekers for example. For me it basically comes down to 'does Hot Rod's alt look right lined up with the other cars?' and I'm afraid it doesn't. Plus I'm pretty sure I wouldn't want MP Kup, Blurr, Arcee etc almost as tall as MP-10.

MP-09's size as Rodimus Prime I'm happy with, in bot and winnebago modes (it's just a shame he doesn't actually transform from one to the other!).

Hotrod bot mode scales ok with Optimus. If he were to Optimus shoulders with out bending the knees, then it would be better.
I hope takara decides to take another shot at Hotrod and Rodimus as individual bots.

I don't particularly disagree, and to counter my own argument, the scene where Hot Rod becomes Rodimus clearly shows him growing considerably in size. But that's the only time that ever happens. The other times the Matrix is removed from him or returned to him, he remains the same size. You could argue that the animators just kept drawing him the same size as Rodimus, since that was who they were used to drawing in S3, but that doesn't explain the movie. Or maybe, once the Matrix increased his size at the end of the movie, he never returned to his old size even when the Matrix was removed from him (but again, that doesn't explain why he was the same size as Prime throughout the movie :)  ).

But talking of consistency... When it comes to MPs, people are usually screaming out for cartoon accuracy in everything, and it has become especially ubiquitous to demand robot mode scale accuracy. Anything that deviates from this usually comes in for criticism (Ultra Magnus is too tall, Grimlock is now too small, etc). But here is a case where MP-09 as Hot Rod is very clearly cartoon accurate in scale (even his alt mode, in fact - look at the size of his vehicle mode tackling Galvatron and next to Optimus Prime in the other pic), but in this one particular case, people suddenly *don't* want cartoon-accuracy, but rather want it either to fit in with the other car bots (even though Bumblebee and the mini-bots will be out of scale with them anyway) or the scale chart, which in this case has no relation to the actual depiction of the character in the cartoon at all. (The cartoon was often inconsistent in its representation of robot mode sizes, but with Hot Rod, it wasn't - he was always as big as Prime,or half a head shorter at the most.)

But as I say, I'd definitely buy a smaller Hot Rod, even though it wouldn't be cartoon accurate. :)

Actually, in all fairness, collectors aren't being inconsistent - we must all now genuflect to the holy scale chart:

Lol, you still haven't got rid of Blaster's Decepticon double though!

It is an odd one for sure, with the toon depictions very consistent. Of course MP Daniel ought to be about twice the size of MP-10's Spike figure for the fishing scene, but we'll ignore that :D

Maybe leaders in general just shrunk in S3

D'oh, yes, I need to crack out Photoshop and fix that!

On another note, has anybody seen these (not sure if they've already been discussed) - brought to my attention by nemisispringer on the UK threads:

Days? The inner Ark is a must, as is a Nemesis equivalent. Outside Ark too, Decepticon space bridge, some part of Autobot City for s3 bots (perhaps Lookout Mountain?) and inner Unicron scenery would all be instabuys.

Oh...maybe Chaar wasteland too for when Galvatron gets here.

I don't disagree with that either but there are inconsistencies in Hot Rod depiction, as you point out he grew to become Rodimus and yet didn't seem any bigger in comparison with the rest of the autobots after this. Next to Daniel he looked a lot smaller than Prime, indeed in the opening scenes on earth Daniel rides in Hot Rod and his car mode looks pretty standard sized for an earth sports car.

But like we have both pointed out this really is a silly argument, the animators were far less slaves to scale than adult fans are. MP-09 isn't really out of scale, because the scale was never clearly defined in the first place.

I really wish that they would redo him as Rodimus Convoy/Rodimus Prime and give him the trailer. Make him about half to three-forths of an inch shorter than MP-10 Optimus Prime.

Yep, given that they are $35 a pop, I can see myself spending a bit too much money on those. :)  I'm going to need some wider shelves, though, to fit those folding versions, which look fantastic.

Ha ha, I wish. No, it was a ten minute Photoshop job, I'm afraid!

But it's a fun debate pass the time with to avoid work and while waiting for Wheeljack to be released. :)

Talking of which, I just put this together, and am looking forward to changing "MP-20" to green in the next couple of weeks:

Oh cool, those look really nice!
It's a dilemma... On the one hand, MP-09 looks great as Rodimus Prime in each mode but doesn't transform from one to the other. OTOH, if they chucked out the Hot Rod car transformation in favour of a proper conversion to space winnebago mode, the robot form probably wouldn't look as good (I imagine it would be a lot less streamlined).
