I've been really taking my time on this, giving almost every piece a black wash and almost every metal piece a silver dusting. I've been doing the same to the "skeleton" on areas before applying parts. I've also been adding details and will go over him again when he's all done. Each pic represents about an hour of work.

Many thanks to those who posted in the DMK Prime Feedback thread. The tips there, like the finger mod and the LED tutorial, have been extremely helpful!

Thanks guys! The fingers are already melted in place. I couldn't believe how bad they were at first. I just tried moving a knuckle and it would pop off. There's no way he'd be able to hold those weapons in the first pic without fixing the fingers :)

    7-14-14 update

Here are my latest pics. I've got the LED in his head working. The windows on his chest were a bit of a pain. I was sanding down the edges of the left one to get it to go in all the way, but then it wouldn't stay in, so I glued it. It doesn't look very good, but fortunately that part is covered by the door :)
I also tried putting chrome foil around the edges of the windows, but most of that got scraped off as I put in the windows. I plan to revisit those, along with touching up the paint job, later on...
Also shown in a couple of these pics is Big Hache's Shapeways cannon: Optimus Cannon (Standard Hands version) v1.0 by BigHache on Shapeways

Wow, it's been three months between the first post and this one. I think I'm done with the most detailed stuff, though, so hopefully the rest of it will be quicker. I did spend quite a bit of time on the LEDs and chrome foil since the first post, but that's done now, so that should help...

Very nice. Could you direct me to the LED tutorial you mentioned in your original post? I've already done one DMK custom, but I'll probably do another.

I have to leave work now and can't find the exact page, but it's somewhere in here: http://www.tfw2005.com/boards/transformers-feedback/424738-dual-model-kit-optimus-prime-dmk-01-a.html
Just keep clicking through the pages and looking through the pics, ignoring pages without pics, and it shouldn't take TOO long...

    Done!

Finished up this guy on Labor Day! I may still do some touch-ups here and there in the future... Mainly I'd like to come up with some way to attach the FWI kits to him. But for now, he's complete!
The DMK Bumblebee in the one pic is my 9-year-old son's. He was painting it on Labor Day while I was painting Prime :)

Dang! That thing is beautiful. I've been wanting this for a long time, but I'm not sure if assembling it is beyond my skill level. Seeing your piece is really inspirational.

Thanks! I don't really have any skill, I've just been looking through the tutorials here...

It's not really hard. The worst part is trying to get parts to fit when they're too tight. If I were to do it again, I'd sooner sand down pegs or widen holes before trying to cram something it, then using glue or Future floor polish to tighten it...

You guys can try Google Shop to see if there are any still available. I think I got mine for about $100, can't remember for sure...
