Did you see the same movie?

what about the scene where they get the gang together and are fighting among themselves and other scenes like that.

Now this is where the disconnect between the general audience, critics and us fans are. The posts online complaining about Shia not being in it prove this.

This. To add insult to injury, unlike other action movies, this franchise exists to sell toys. Even if we get a movie that has the robots at the main center, if it's a box office bomb and doesn't get kids to buy toys, in Hasbro's eyes it failed. They don't want another situation like the one after the 1986 movie in the U.S.

I say 10-15 years from now we might get the movie we (at least the majority) want because by then CGI will be less expensive, the Bay movies would have ended a while ago, and the general audience might be finally ready for the Transformers to take center stage.

Honestly, how can you critique a science fiction movie? It's science fiction, take it for face value. Critics, jeez. I think he's right though, they don't get it. It would be like critiquing Star Wars, Star Trek, or Planet of the Apes and saying it wasn't realistic. Well, Hmmm....it's not. It's entertainment.

Wait Transformers continued for another 4 years after the 86 movie, it may not have done box office but the toys sold.

Critiquing is not just a case of judging if something is realistic.

Sorry forgot Dark, Gritty and Realistic are the only things that make anything good now.

Also you just gave Battlefield Earth a pass (because that is "pure science fiction")

I've already pointed out that this statement isn't true several times before - if you check the Wikipedia page for each of his movie you will realise the only times Bay has been directly blamed were Armageddon and Revenge Of The Fallen - both times he acknowledge it as his fault for the issues brought up. I'm not on about the random reviewers on Rotten Tomatoes and stuff - I'm on about professional critics.

While their are a few critics who have taken to blaming Bay - these are not the definitive versions of critics and Lorzeno generalising and saying they all "Don't understand" is just stupid.

People latch onto negativity because 'good news is no news' - a common psychological state of many in the media and in life. Their are good reviews - however - that doesn't change the fact that Lorenzo is being a childish asshole who cant accept any criticism good or bad.

I didn't realize Bay had his own private military and the balls to declare war on China. :lol  The pandering to the Chinese market was actually.... tolerable in this movie, to my surprise, since I was really dreading the worst with the racist stereotypes and blatant product placement. But it was actually no worse than past Transformers films, really.

Sure, some clunky dialogue and exposition with the KSI factory extras, PRC gov't heads, and Li Bing Bing's character, but wasn't exactly the "RAH RAH Murican military rules!" stuff we got in the past flicks.

The American military wasn't the bad guy in AOE, it was a shadowy black ops division of the CIA that were the main antagonist. Big distinction there, since NEST was disbanded and the President of the US (you know, the Commander In Chief of the US Armed Forces) was in the dark as to what Attinger and Savoy were up to.

    Apparently not.

You mean that scene that also featured Marky Mark and his model daughter and her model boy toy there too?

And other scenes like that, guess you mean all those other scenes that had humans in them. Like Lockdown capturing Optimus, and all the while the model daughter is running around the ship then the autobots and humans go to rescue them.

Thank you captain obvious for enlightening me on the structure of our armed forces. I had no fucking clue that POTUS was the commander in chief of the armed forces.

Snarky rebuttal out of the way, yes, it was all black op CIA, and it wasn't the straight up military. However, tell that to casual movie goers that doesn't give a shit about the details and think of the military/government as all one and the same. CIA, armed forces, executive branch, it's all Government agencies doing bad shit.

I think if the Transformer characters were written better, it wouldn't alienate audiences to have more bots and less humans. As it is, without the humans you just have a load of robots shouting one liners and blowing stuff up with little character development.

Hahahaha I love when movies get rightly slammed and its the critics that are wrong.

As fans of Transformers we deserve better.

Look at Pacific Rim, it got good reviews and was actually good, even with being giant robots vs giant monsters.

That's Technical Sergeant Obvious. Thanks for the promotion to Captain but I don't think it'd be official coming from you. ;)

Some of us movie going audience members do have a working brain cell between us, you know. Considering that you yourself saw the movie, maybe you can give the fandom a little credit, yes? :D

I'm not speaking of the fandom. I'm speaking of the general movie-going public, that while smart, do have a tendency to boil such details down to their core. We care about these details, I mean we're posting here after all, but that's what the general public do. They boil stuff down and miss the little details, then they complain about it.

But anyways, my point was that in AOE there is a good guy military presence that the other films had, while this film only has this negative corrupt governmental portrayal.

"We also need people because I, for one, will never care for Optimus Prime any more than for an engine block."

That was Roger Ebert in reviewing DOTM. While he starts off the paragraph by saying the Bots don't have much personality, he ends it with that sentence. Some critics will not accept the robots as the main figures instead of background characters. His former sidekick, Gene Siskel would never give a horror film a thumbs up no matter how good it was because he simply didn't like the genre. Those people bring their prejudices into their reviews and have their framework for what a movie should be. Even the first one that Ebert said was ok, he still called it "goofy fun"

Someone earlier said that Bay gets ripped for things other directors don't get ripped. Avatar, which is essentially Ferngully 2, was praised for some of the things Bay gets ripped for. How many people praised the special effects of that movie and said that was why you went to see it and not the weak plot? How about the "unobtanium, yet they criticize Transformium.
People can criticize it, that's fine. There are different tastes out there for everyone. There are movies that get good reviews, but I don't like. All I'm saying is let's apply the criteria evenly to all. Either way, I'm going to see what I think I'm going to like and not see what doesn't appeal to me regardless of what an "expert" says.

And yet, when reviewing Wall E he had to say,

"WALL-E, for whom I felt a curious affection...WALL-E, however, looks rusty and hard-working and plucky, and expresses his personality with body language and (mostly) with the binocular-like video cameras that serve as his eyes."

    It's all in the presentation.

Agreed and Pacific Rim should have done better Box Office than Transformers by its quality alone. It was not high art, or a Scorcese film from the 70s - it had B-movie goofiness, but it was well handled. And it was very fun - and it was not insulting to my intelligence. And it was not loaded with bad writing, stupid jokes and bad shot selection and shitty filmmaking. Can you tell how much I dislike Bay's filmmaking :)  Anyway, Transformers made more money than Pacific Rim because it's a brand. But Pacific Rim is WAY BETTER - in the hands of an artist, not a goofy hamfisted assistant director promoted before his time. Too bad.
