The writer of the film says the movie doesnt have to make sense.

I'd really like to disagree with you there because obviously I'm a huge AOE fan, but jesus Winter Soldier was so bad ass I'm not sure I can do it

Technically speaking, Kruger only wrote two of the films so far. But yeah, those two films were... kinda lacking in compelling story. I was more excited by my popcorn.

Except the most well known entries into those series, Avatar aside (even though it's just Pocahontas: Cat Smurf edition), date back to the 80's. The effects are very much dated now, but they were honestly cutting edge back then and the movies had to have very good writing to pick up the slack.

They also had good editors. The first three Star Wars films? Sure, Lucas wrote them, but his wife at the time was the one who edited them before production. She divorced him later and so wasn't around to edit the prequel trilogy, thus why everybody dislikes Episode 1 because it's full of politics nobody gives two shits about.

I think he's only talking about the recent entries into those franchises, which are nothing close to the great originals.

Well, I think he also wrote The Ring, which had the stupidest ending to a horror film I've ever seen (that was played straight), so...

Damn I thought this movie was amazing. A real step forward. But trying to justify all the plot holes is like justifying animation errors in G1 as continuity.

My perspective on the movieverse has shifted completely. Because the Core Five Autobot Team is such psychotic fun.

First, I enjoyed AoE, even if it has been getting poor reviews. Having said that, I don't know why these films can't get the same treatment as other sci-fi/fantasy franchises. Yes, it's based on some toys. Toys I grew up with, cartoons I watched, and comics I read. I'm 34 years old now and I'm STILL reading almost everything IDW puts out (which is usually great), and I've broken down and shilled out a small fortune on Masterpiece and 3rd party lines. So for someone to say that this is just a kid's franchise... We'll, so's the Marvel Movie Universe!

With these types of movies, of course there is a "suspension of belief." I think we can all agree on that. But can we not also ask for "internal consistency" and "good storytelling?" these other franchises have proven it can be done. If you guys are familiar with the IDW stuff, you KNOW that their is a goldmine of material for riveting storytelling AND "spectacle." please, we suffered through 3 blasphemous star war movies... Just ONE really top-notch TF movie is all I ask for. The groundwork they've laid is sufficient... They can really take off with the world they've created. Just need some good storytelling

Also nobody really was willing to tell Lucas "This line? It sucks." Many of Han's best lines were ad libbed by Harrison Ford, who famously told Lucas "You can write this shit, but you sure can't say it." If you learn about the filming of the first Star Wars, you find out that a lot of veteran film makers from British film were involved. Look at behind the scenes footage for the prequels, you'll see he sat the actors in a green room, with green couches. Yep Lucas CGI'd the damn couches, couldn't even make a space couch prop. At least Bay uses some actual props.

Oh yeah, what I was going to say. While it seems the movies make money no matter how the writing, I don't think that giant transforming alien robots means internal logic and consistancy are impossible for the narrative storytelling.

This is extremely harsh and unwarranted.

People have gotten used to doing that to TF movies, but I think AOE deserves it less than the previous ones. I suppose the fact that they've addressed a number of the issues I've had with the previous three makes me a little more forgiving (a little strange - unlike TFs 1 to 3, AOE wasn't on my Must Watch list originally).
