These movies will always make a ton money, no matter who writes or directs them, because it's Transformers.

 

The media outlet of "me, myself, and I".  

In the same vein as collecting toy robits, I suppose.  

 

Is TF4 really that successful in America? I don't think so, based on the current stats.

Comparing the opening week stats in North America to the previous movies, it is the worst of the four, and the quickest drop-off of takings after the first day...

TF4 (these are noted as estimates, but shouldn't be too far off the actuals)
Transformers: Age of Extinction (2014) - Daily Box Office Results - Box Office Mojo
F 27th June - 41.6 million (a lot less than TF2's opening day)
S 28th June - 32.2 million
S 29th June - 26.2 million (almost half of the first day)
(total for first week - 100 million... a lot less than the previous three)
The takings for the next five days will drop off (being weekdays), and second weekend takings are always a half to a quarter of first weekend takings. I don't see this movie making as much as the others in America... but will make up the difference in non-American markets.

TF3 (opened on Wednesday - the numbers held right through to the Sunday, which isn't happening with the Fourth movie)

Based on audience comments and atmosphere in the sessions I've been at so far, I think word of mouth discouraging others from enduring the slow-paced movie, and a lack of repeat screenings by those who did see it, has offset the Millions spent on constant advertising (30+ trailers?), and could be the reason for the much more rapid drop-off of interest in TF4 than the other three.

 

I grew up with G1 and Beast Wars and have really only skipped Energon and Cybertron (when I was younger I didn't like the CGI all too much, though now I can probably go back and watch it for completion's sake). I've seen basically all the main media since. The movies are great. You may not like them. You may not appreciate them. Critically speaking, they're barely strung together explosions of metal and camera lens flares. Does that mean they have no redeeming value, or the movies have no vast universe inside them?

It drives me nuts when people are like "THIS THING BEING MADE ISN'T LIKE THE THING I ENJOY, SO IT'S TERRIBLE AND NEEDS TO GO AWAY!" And last I checked, I'm a big fan of G1 Prime, and he was plenty murderous. As much as movie Prime? No, but I'm also pretty sure that other than Transformers Prime, we also haven't had humans constantly demanding the Autobots GTFO, dismembering and slaughtering both Autobots and Decepticons, tampering with their bodies/tech in some way, and so on.

And if the movies did fail, Hasbro might not try again with something different. Them making oodles of money with films they tweak and experiment with bit by bit gives them more ability to give us what we want. You think after 30 years Hasbro is clueless as to what the fans are looking for? We're getting characters like Brainstorm and Arcee as toys for a reason.

Most of all what bothers me about sentiments like this, movie quality notwithstanding, is the assumption that every show prior has been the same status quo nonsense and Transformers hasn't been a constantly evolving and changing property for decades. Come on, guys.

 

I think 4th of July weekend in America could change that griffin you see the numbers TF1 had on July 3 + 4, that's no coincidence imo

 

You forgot the part where Bay says he's done with the franchise until the dollar signs start dancing in his eyes and he comes back for one more.

Now that said dollar signs have appeared I'm sure the announcement will be coming in the next couple months.



I wish the man would let someone else take a shot. The first three were addictive (this one not so much for me, at least so far). But all four really are not good movies. Things could certainly get worse, but it could also get so much better.

Wonder if he'll die first, or if the box office returns will diminish first. These things just keep getting bigger.

Well it's the least bad of the four so maybe things will continue to slowly improve.

The Transformers franchise is the only moneymaker for Hasbro.

I doubt they change the formula anytime soon.

 

Transformers is the Call of Duty of movies  : Nearly everyone hates it but it constantly breaks records and makes a shit ton of money.

 

I've watched it twice already & happy to contribute for it's success.

Oh, so the fact the subsequent reviews followed similar summaries of the plot and the fact people decried all of it as a conspiracy, that AoE was better than what the critics thought, is a bad example?

Let's be realistic here. Sure, there are insults being tossed around, but people were getting angry at critics for doing their jobs just because they didn't like the movie and the rabid supporting side demanded that they were liars as a result.

Actually, I think they tried doing just that with how Battleship turned out. Granted, the whole thing was terrible anyway, but they slapped "by the people who brought you TRANSFORMERS" all over the advertisements. Barely made under $100 million in profit.

Then again, that movie is also still currently higher rated than AoE on most movie rating sites...

It doesn't matter anyway. TF1 didn't come in IMAX 3D so the rate of revenue intake is skewed in favor of AoE as a result.

 

The only movie that will challenge AoE this year is Guardians of the Galaxy! Hobbit will be close but honestly Guardians looks plane awesome and just has so much potential to be the best marvel film to date. I loved AoE thought it was the best TF movie thus far but like I said I have a feeling Guardians will surprise.

 

So no matter what else, the movie made money. Lots and lots of money. And as long as that happens, Bay, and Paramount can rest assured they are doing something right. The movie was not made to please critics, or Geewunners. It was made to make money, and it is doing that.

Now to see how the Toyline does, in comparision.

 

Imagine if the critics actually praised AOE, I wonder how much more it would of made...hmmm.

Hasbro isn't in any sort of trouble if one of the Transformers films eventually tank at the box office.

Toys that aren't based on the movie sell in the years without a movie so the Transformers line will keep chugging along after a box office bomb. Few brands have been on the shelves as consistently as Transformers so the brand can survive without live action movies just as the brand had plenty of product on the shelves before the first film ever came out.

Transformers also isn't Hasbro's only brand. They have so many brands that a film not doing well like GI Joe can't bring down the whole company.

If anyone has to worry it's Paramount. They need some big franchises where they aren't just the distributors so they aren't sitting in as good of a position as other studios right now. With this fear of what a Transformers failure might do the company that's going to keep Paramount from changing much of anything in the near future. Paramount will continue to play it safe with as is even if some bold risks would make for a better film.

Cartoons will change and evolve. Toys will change and evolve. But the movies aren't going to change and evolve until Paramount feels like they are the sort of footing to take bigger risks or the films start to fizzle at the box office and real change comes as an attempt to save the franchise for Paramount.

 

Well until they figure out how to make a live action My Little Pony movie.
