I'm not ignoring it. I just don't watch hockey. Never really have.

High ratings are essential, but high attendance is also essential.

Not really. I was just looking for possible explanations. In any case, if there's a chance of public backlash over the name, they should consider changing it. Sports teams are there to entertain the public, not to dictate what is/isn't socially acceptable at any given moment.

That did not come up in my search.

Actually they HAVE polled Native Americans and found somthing ridiculous like 90-95% were fine with the Redskins team name.

Again, we are talking about an extreme minority of an extreme minority that have managed to get a lot of people riled up and offended on their behalf because it's trendy to have a cause that makes a person feel like they are doing something, while being trivial enough to not require real effort.

I find the term Trekkie offensive...so IT should be banned, especially if it was a football team's name. What about the "Devils"? Some people find that offensive too..change their name? Oh I know..what about the Yankees?! That was kind of an offensive term:

    "yankee

The word is a derogatory term used to describe Americans by the Brits, Canadians, Australians and the like; but in the USA used to define an American from the Northern States in the USA, such as New England and the Mid-West."

Also, the reason to keep the name is to preserve the history of the team and its organization. It costs a bunch of money to have to come up with new names, do focus groups to see if that name works well with the public, create new logos, completely change any signage or all of the team banners in the stadium,, around the city, and billboards or other marketing, design and produce all new apparel, marketing material, etc, etc. its not like, oh we changed our name, no biggie.

If you are offended, do not watch the games or buy stuff to support the team. It isn't hard.

The same point in time when "Black" became one... Just saying... Equality and all... We are all supposed to say African Americans, not "blacks". So then we should say Caucasian Americans or Anglo-Americans or something, I guess..not really sure, but technically not "Whites"...

We did. Star Trek fans prefer to be called "Trekkers". Trekkie is taken as an insult, often referring to the type of Star Trek fan who doesn't realize that it was just a TV show and that Starfleet Academy is in fact, not a real institution. Unfortunately, if you say that in normal conversation, people will look at you like you're a Klingon or something.

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: The Washington Redskins (HBO) - YouTube

This pretty much sums up the whole thing.

As for not watching or what have you, I find pretty much all sports and everyone associated offensive which is why I don't watch games or buy their stuff.

Why would I? The search feature should find the thread wherever it is. It's twice as much work if I have to manually search for it and then use the search tool afterwards.

I think they should change the name to the Washington Gridlock, lol. The team logo could be little cars, bumper to bumper.

I'm going to buy a Redskins hat.

I'm also going to make my "I support Daniel Snyder and the Redskins" shirt.

    Then wear it proudly.

I have friend/driver at work, he is Native American and involved in the tribe, he thinks this crap is all a joke. He refuses to sign petitions when this crap comes up.

Tribal government and our own have similar issues as to have difficulty seeing what is and is not important apparently.

I agree with the "why" about this as alluded to by MetalicGrunt, but can say no more.

If you're implying that Obama has anything to do with this, then its safe to say that you've both no clue what you're talking about.

Maybe they should ask the Native Americans what they think before taking matters into their own hands.

It doesn't matter WHO'S offended by it, it matters THAT people are offended by it. And apparently enough people for it to get this much attention means that they should just buck up and change the damned name.

Uhhhh...NO. That's a ridiculous argument. You don't have to look hard to find someone who is offended by something in today's disgusting PC-driven world. "Facebook outrage" is really, really easy. It's easy to act like you really give a f**k, click "like" on a "Change the Redskins name!" post you saw, then go back to scratching your balls while watching Game Of Thrones on the couch.

    Let's see....

I, and some other members, are offended by your username. "TRANS" trekkie? Are you making fun of transsexual people? You're obviously a bigot, from my perspective. It doesn't matter WHO is offended by it, what matters is THAT we're offended by it. So you should change it, right? (Please note my sarcasm.)

EDIT: Gahhhhhh! I always try to stay out of these dumbass PC debates - but sometimes get sucked in. I said my piece, lol. No more. I respect your opinion, transtrekkie - but obviously disagree.

    I'm out.

The government won't pay for them to get new products printed and made with the new name they are forcing them to spend millions in rebranding just because of a name that's been around a long time.

If this set a precedent hey could start doing this to any business they wanted to bankrupt.

The amount of money to come up with a new name and mascot replace anything with the current theme on it, then if they approve the new name since they originally approved the old name if they don't like that one they could do the same all over to them again.
