Amazing how replacing the dark blue with the black (how Drift actually is colored in the movie) makes the figure look so much better. You might have swayed me to buy this figure just to try out that paint job for myself. Nice work I'm assuming you just did a very slight wash of black paint on the gold on his face and helmet?
Actually, Drift is dark blue in the movie, just a waaaaaaaay darker blue than what Hasbro used. They've gone for almost a royal blue when it needs a dark navy or midnight blue. Black is an acceptable substitute though
I agree. I'm never going to be happy about them being too small to go anywhere near previous movie figures- but the paint/plastic choices are turning out to be the real line killer. I planned on buying 2-3 tays after seeing them at toyfair. I was only buying bee for parts for a scratch build. But I ended up painting him because I still haven't had a good look at what his onscreen shoulder/collar area looks like and I got impatient waiting. I was shocked to discover just how nice the mold was with some paint. Same is true of Galvatron and a few others. These are over all better sculpts than DOTM had, but you can't tell. They're all hideous straight out of the package. Thank you! Thank you! I ought to sell these things. But I don't generally have time to do them. Also, I'm not always as thorough as I should be. There are some spots on him and Galvatron I didn't bother to paint because they're hard to get to and I know I'll never see them. Thank you! I completely agree. In my case, black was also a lazy substitute. I had black on hand, I didn't feel like going to the hobby store to look for a very, very dark blue I liked or mixing my own.
The black wash would very likely work, but no. I completely painted over his face and swords with the gunmetal I used for most of his body then more or less dry brushed gold over them. It worked beautifully on the face. I'm not entirely happy with the result on the swords and may try them again. As far as the blue, I think somebody at Hasbro just saw blue on a list somewhere and didn't bother to try any harder. They could have easily gone really dark blue in the plastic and it would have made a world of difference. Most of Hasbro's renders of the character just look black, but I noticed the car looks black sometimes and blue others. I probably should have found a good really dark blue. But I'm happy with him.
That is a great paint job on that..it really is. But that Head is just downright atrocious. The mold..not the paint..I don't get any type of "robot" vibe from it at all, and it has a sneaky, untrustworthy, shit eating grin on his face. Mabye a Prime Wheeljack head on it?? Nice painting..
Thank you. I'd have to check but I suspect a Wheeljack head would be huge on it. These guys really are tiny. But it could work. I went back and looked at my photos. I think some exposure issues with my phone make the face look worse than it is and over emphasize the lips. But it is what it is and I don't blame you for disliking it. I'm still a bit bothered that new bots (design wise) are a fat old man with a santa clause beard, a Samurai and some guy in 3d glasses and a (purvy) trench coat. (says the man who owns 2 trench coats and has been known to wear them with shorts- which bugs everybody...) I don't know why I like the samurai. Bludgeon always bothered me for the exact same reason. Maybe the ridiculous concept somehow makes it ok? I don't know.
Regardless, the Samurai-humanoid inspired helmet-face is the unique feature of the character for the movie. It's different and unique. I personally like your dry brushing and - weather worn- painted choice on Drift and Bee.
Kraken was unhappy with how dark the backgrounds have been on the customs people have done of Drift. So I'm going ahead and bumping mine again (I believe mine is the only one painted in this style that wasn't photographed in front of a black background). For the record, Rodemeister0088 nailed it and did what i should have done with a really dark blue rather than my lazy black (although I did leave the spaces between his armor panels on his chest blue specifically for that reason). I didn't feel like going to the paint store to find it or trying to mix that color.
