I am ashamed to say that I have never read a Transformers comic. Because G1 is my favorite continuity, I'm planning to start with either IDW or Dreamwave, but I am not sure which one would be best. Suggestions?

I suggest you do not read Dreamwave.

Don't even bother glancing at Dreamwave. IDW all the way.

War Within was good, though. Just not worth exposing himself to all the poorly-written dreck the other writers were foisting on us over.

I loved Dream Wave, still love it. In the end I say IDW if you have to choose, all that Rexidus mentioned is worth your weight in gold it simply some of the best fiction out there Transformers or otherwise.

Let me ask you this, ...just how much do you like the G1 cartoon?

Because if you really, REALLY like the G1 cartoon, you'll be better served by reading through the Dreamwave books. But, if you're cool with viewing G1 through a different lens; seeing those characters and their universe interpreted differently, then you'll get quite a bit of enjoyment out of the IDW books.

I'll agree with you there. But it still makes up like 12% of Dreamwave. Even IDW at it's worst had some shining moments.

Dreamwave also had a bunch of plot threads left hanging due to its cancellation. IDW is what you should read.

IDW, hands down. Dreamwave is good if you like bad artwork and bad writing.

    I'd start with IDW.

In fact to save time and money (assuming you under the spine of G1 and transformers) start with MTMTE/RID series.

It is almost like a reboot for G1 and much needed.

You may lose a bit by not knowing some of the stories that came before it but it still will be enjoyable.

I'd add Last Stand of the Wreckers and the Death of Optimus Prime to that, in fact if you go the TPB route DOOP is in More than Meets the eye Vol 1.

Dreamwave has no monopoly on bad artwork. IDW has seen its fair share of that as well.

+1. I have a lot of childhood nostalgia for Sunbow cartoon & Marvel comics G1, and these books that Rexidus recommended (especially LSotW and MTMTE) took the characters I love, and brought them back to life with a lot of fun, fresh ideas that have kept me hooked.

Far enough comment. These are kind of essential set-ups to the RID/MTMTE series.

It's quite simple. If you're a massive cartoon fanboy that hates everything transformers related that's not the cartoon and see itas some sort of pinnacle of Transformers fiction you'll hate IDW.

If you're actually willing to look at Transformers outside of the border of the cartoon you'd find that IDW is easily the best fictoin that has ever come out of this franchise.

Last Stand of The Wreckers(Hardcover) -> Chaos Theory -> More Than Meets The Eye and Robots in Disguise and you're set.

Alright, well, I think I'm going to go with IDW, since that's what most people are saying. Anyone know where the best place to buy those comics is?

If you want G1 to be an exercise in nostalgia and nothing more, go with Dreamwave, if you want to read G1 stories set in a continuity that feels fresh, exciting and alive, go with IDW.

The only books from Dreamwave I can recommend are the MTMTE Profile books. While they're not really relevant to IDW's take on characters, it's still nice to have something that fleshes out some of the more obscure members of the g1 cast.

So anyone that disagrees with you is a cartoon fanboy and clearly wrong???

For what it's worth, I don't like the cartoon, but am not completely convinced IDW is "easily" the best fiction from the franchise (parts of Marvel UK still beat it) either.
