I've never seen Evangelion and from what I've read in this thread, I think I've just been convinced not to. Visually, it just looks like another Robotech knock-off like Gundam Wing and it sounds like everything is so stupid powerful with rampant deus ex machina abilities. Ugh. Shit like this is why no one reads Superman comics. He's so stupid powerful that there's no point in anyone/anything going against him. You know what? Screw it, let's throw Supes into this fight too. Um... he wins. Done.
That's not it at all. Unit-01 only got stupidly powerful on the rare occasion that it woke up from its piloted comatose state. Otherwise it was barely an even match for just some of the Angels it fought. As for the visuals, it's 90's anime. The show definitely isn't what you think it is.
1. Ar...Are you seriously calling something Gundam-related a knockoff of Robotech? And as for the comparison with Evangelion, they look absolutely nothing alike. At all. 2. Deus ex Machina - An unexpected power or event saving a seemingly hopeless situation, especially as a contrived plot device in a play or novel. Something more akin to a DeM would be a character like Batman, who is unbelievably broken to the point of near-Gary-Stu status. As for Evangelion, the concept of A.T-Fields is quite literally the very component for the real reason behind why everything proceeds as it does in the series. Something that can be explained within reason is not a Deus ex Machina. 3. Might as well not watch Godzilla with that type of insight, much less any known fictional character who is absurdly powerful. You do not watch Evangelion for just the fights alone. If you are looking for a cheap mecha show where you don't have to think and simply have the answers handed to you on a silver platter, go look elsewhere.
I laughed so so much at that. Neon Genesis Evangelion is a deconstruction of the mecha genre. A deconstruction wont be ripping anything off. The point of an Evangelion isn't to be the strongest, it's existence has completely different reasons that aren't related to combat in the slightest. From reading your comment there you clearly know absolutely zilch about Evangelion and seem to think that it all revolves around this one super powered mech that isn't even a mech. Theres the plot, the characters, the music, the development...it's hailed as one of the greatest animes for a reason. A simple knock-off of Gundam or Revoltech wouldn't gain that status. Evangelion often gets called the show that "redefined the mecha genre" and anime in general. You watch Neon Genesis Evangelion and suddenly you notice so much influence from it in shows that came after it.
1. Sort of yes and sort of no. It was mostly posted for laughs although... I do kind of have to explain myself here. See, when I was a wee lad back in the 80's, my first experience with any sort of giant mecha was Transformers. Shortly after I seriously got into TF, I started seeing toys around for other things like Robotech, Go-Bots, Gundam, Voltron and what have you. But, having seen TFs first and not having seen these until after, I had this perception that they were all just knock-offs trying to capitalise on the success of TF. Especially Robotech since that mold is where Hasbro got Jetfire. I didn't learn until well into adulthood that it was actually the other way around, that many of those things were around first and TFs actually came later. But, I still tend to view those franchises from that perspective and to this day they all just kinda still look the same to me. If you held up Voltron, an EVA, a Gundam and a Robotech I still probably wouldn't be able to tell you which is which (assuming they're not in package which would give that away). I'll freely admit I was weird when I was a kid, and unfortunately, some of that has carried over to my later years. Also, I don't like Japanese anime. So most of those have two strikes against them right out the gate: 1) Not TFs and B) anime. And for me, that generally equals one big pile of nope. 2. Well I freely admit that I was just basing that on comments from this thread which read like two kids playing. "I hit you, you're dead" "Nah-uh, I have this unbreakable shield""My shield hit yours, now you're dead""Nah-uh, they have to be the same for that to work""Fine, they're the same. Now are you dead?" I'm quite sure the in context reasoning for all of this is less ridiculous, but again, not having seen it, this was this thread was coming across. Probably because of the nature of the topic, which would naturally focus on the EVA's abilities rather than context, but... 3. Exactly. I don't watch Godzilla. The last time I watched Godzilla was in 1998 and I lived to regret it. As did we all. But, as I stated before, this is also why I don't read Superman comics. Heh, at least someone here got a good laugh out of it, which was the primary intention. Also some of that other stuff above, but mostly comedity.
I dunno, was it because I so clearly didn't know what I was talking about? Cause that really was the joke.
Out of curiosity, what exactly is the nature of the Angels' cores? If they're nuclear, Godzilla will indeed seek them out and maybe even drain them.
Why is this still a discussion? Eva 01 -ENDED- the universe. The only thing, in my book, tied to Eva 01 is Ideon, which, again, in its own universe...ENDED the universe. And if you can't visualize that because it is too broad...Ideon cut a planet in half. A planet. Voltron is your typical super robot, and to be frank, does not do anything impressive. It's just that it's very popular in the US. Getter Robo is stronger. Metroplex is just a big dude. Seriously, of all these listed, he's the most normal of them all. Only just recently has hasbro tried to give him "supernatural" powers. Godzilla...I don't know. There must be some trick to it, but why is a japanese kaiju in a versus fight with robots?
Godzilla has insane regenerative powers (He's been cut in half, destroyed to the point of being a disembodied heart and another time, a skeleton and managed to come back with relative ease from all three. Even serious wounds can be regenerated within the space of a few seconds, minutes, or hours), is obnoxiously tough (He tanked the Castle Bravo tests no problem and has been hit by meteors of varying size to absolutely no effect), is obnoxiously strong (Capable of lifting a monster twice his mass and tossing him around like a styrofoam palette and once threw one literally over the horizon) and is capable of both unleashing and absorbing various energy attacks including electricity, electromagnetic waves, nuclear plasma, pure radiation, etc. No longer arguing in Godzilla's favor, just listing some of his powers for the guy above who didn't seem clear on them.
An Angel's core (and by extension an Eva's) is not classical radiation. I don't believe they have a typical energy output we humans could feasibly label, given they're possessed by inter-dimensional logic-defying super monsters; all we do know is that they possess an S2 engine that supplies them with limitless power and is the key behind powering an Eva unit. Regardless, Godzilla tends to be drawn towards sources of immense power in general, not just radiation, so it seems feasible he could indeed pick up on the energy produced by the core. Oh yes. I should also add that he's typically a radiovore; instead of devouring other creatures like you might expect of a huge theropod-esque reptile, he draws most of his sustenance from radiation or other powerful sources of energy. The 2014 incarnation, for instance, feeds off the radiation from the Earth's core, and the Hensei series Jr was able to absorb a titanic amount of radiation to fully mature.
Let me revise my statements on the Hypothetical Clover/Godzilla Fight: Clover would stand a chance against Godzilla if it had the presence of mind to knock a few buildings over on the King of the monsters. In Cloverfield, we can infer that Clover is strong enough to Knock a Skyscraper from the scene where the protagonists have to climb a skyscraper resting on another, Presumably knocked over by Clover. As seen in the Heisei Era as well as in the 2014 Legendary film, a Skyscraper collapsing on top of Godzilla is enough to incapacitate him.
Very temporarily. And it was a very, very large skyscraper, in excess of 700 feet tall if the fact that it was twice Gojira's height is anything to go by. Also, Clover is EXTREMELY fragile by kaiju standards and not terribly smart. A fight would likely consist of Clover flailing at Godzilla like a dork until he tore the beast's head off in one bite.
Puttin Eva 01 in the mix is kind of cheatin since he really is more or less a god where as the rest are just giants. Powerful, resilient giants, but mortal and limited in the long run. That said, as far as I know, Metroplex would probably be the weakest of the lot. Voltron would probably be number two as in a direct fight he'd at least have a massive mobility advantage over the City-former and his Blazing Sword (Go-Lion version is really the only one I know of) would certainly be able to hack it's way through 'plex's armor. Godzilla would whoop both of them though, being the nigh invulnerable King of all Monsters. That big lizard has had a lot of crap thrown at him, buildings, massive nukes, meteors, a Roland Emmerich film, and has just come out stronger and more aggressive because of it. He's like the super saiyajin of Kaijus, beat him down all you want but he'll just get stronger from it. But in the end, he is still just that, a monster. Eva 01, it's not a monster, it's not a robot, it's not some supercyborgthingamawhatsit, it's a god damned deity. It's the alpha and the omega and all that crap, a universe ending apocalypse wrapped in a flesh and polymer purple shell just waitin to bust loose and turn all life into a nice sea of bright orange Tang. It was essentially designed to specifically be used to reset the entire known universe for reasons I'm still not exactly clear on (rich people be crazy?), it wouldn't so much as win the "fight" rather then just delete everything from existence because daddy didn't love little Shinji. Eva is a brain-trip of a show and really can't be compared to straight up giant robots and kaiju monster fights, regardless of how awesome they may be.
I'm wondering when did Godzilla get cut in half? I know Destroyah and Gigan sliced him a few times but...........
Metroplex isn't slow. He's never been shown as being slow. Not in the G1 cartoon and certainly not in the IDW comic. And not in the FoC video game either.
