I agree. I freaking love the TF movies, but when I watch them I skip around to the parts with robots beating the crap out of each other. Pacific Rim, on the other hand, I can watch all the way through with no problem.

This is what I do too, except I just watch those parts on YouTube. I rarely, if ever view the DVDs.

Galvatron was taking a few pot-shots, when suddenly-

    A wild TunaKaan attacks!

Galvatron fights back, but will it be enough? Find out next week, only on the HUUUUUUUUUUB!

Well, Pacific Rim is lucky in that being a piloted mecha setting, humans are involved in the thick of the giant robot action by default; and because the Kaiju (like the Jaegers) are simply extensions of their master's will require no complex characterisation of their own but still managed it by virute of subtle things such as they way the move, how they fight and their overall design. This kind of characterisation is lacking (but by no means totally absent) in the Transformers, especially the Decepticons and since they are themselves characters, we expect more from them.

Since I was a bigger fan of kaiju growing up than I was of Transformers, I've got to give it to Pacific Rim.

But, the Transformers movies are a damn close second. I love both movies, however I like PR just a taaad bit more.

I think I'll add that another reason I prefer Pacific Rim over the movies is that robots vs monsters is a tad more interesting than robots vs robots. I adore my robots vs robots, of course, don't get me wrong, but the contrasts between mechanical engineering and alien biology is very cool to see as machine and monster duke it out :D

Wait what? There's more than one of you?!

    Oh shi-

Hate to say this, since I absolutely hate stupid arguments about whether the movies are good or bad, but "unrealistic" is one of the last things the movie designs are, especially compared to G1.
Although the PR design style would probably be a better fit for the Transformers movies (Except with the same transformation style as we currently have).

Pacific Rim was better - far better. The stereotypical characters in Pacific Rim didn't bother me because they actually helped move the plot forward.

Transformers on the other hand is unwatchable - same with ROTF. DOTM has its moments but its so boring.

Personally, I think the notion that the robot scanning a car gives it 3 dimensional fully detailed specs and, -somehow- it uses that to shift every single part of it's body into parts from the car, is much less realistic than a robot being manually stripped down, rebuilt, and having new facades based on car exteriors added to it, thusly making it's vehicle mode only appear to be an Earth car.

Oh my god your selection of gifs is nothing short of beautiful, Meta.

Bumblebee's spotless Camaro alt. mode magically gets beat up and rusty when he turns into a robot, and then magically becomes floor-room fresh in assuming vehicle mode.

And then Laserbeak somehow basically turns into everything despite being no larger than a baby bear. Everything.

Embodying his essence into a glorious form of crimson metal, Meta rises from the depths before his miniscule subjects, who plead for him to reveal his grand and illustrious truths, and thus he doth declare:

    "Yeah sure, I guess."

Gotta keep those cars looking fresh for the advertising! BUY THE CARS, BUY THE CARS, BUY THE CARS

    And buy the toys too.

This one wouldn't bother me so much if I could buy the cars, but I can't. FUCK YOU, TRADE BARRIERS :mad

We've learnt to stop asking question of the Meta, and accept that he is.

I didn't mean the small details like that. I just meant the way they transform and how they have elegant designs instead of boxes in a humanoid shape.

Fictional design =/= fictional logic and technology.

Well I'd say that's more realistic. He just thinks what he wants to turn into and turns into it (And it's not necessarily entirely accurate, we haven't really seen proof that what he turns into is).

I think Tuna was referring to Pacific Rim's characters.

If we are going to mention Pacific Rim. We may as well slip the "Battleship" movie into the same conversation.
