I'm calling crap. At least one person involved in filming tells us that "this movie will be the darkest one yet" every time we get a new film. DOTM was darker than the first two, but they're definitely not going to make it dark enough that they lose their PG-13 rating. It makes more sense this time though, what with Lockdown holding Prime captive and uh... well, people in cars die, but Demolishor threw like a dozen cars on his rampage.

That being said, I really don't care if it's dark or not, so long as it's fun! Even if the plot sucks, these movies always have great action and CGI, and that's really all I ever want from them. Although it would be nice to have real robot characters every once in a while.

I don't think that'd work as well as it did for Lego.

The whole reason the zanny light hearted thing worked for Lego is because putting fiction to Lego is a completely stupid concept to begin with.

Transformers has always had to some extent a darkness to it. The whole story is pretty much about a war.
I think at this point a light hearted zanny TF film would be received, and probably done, about as well as Joel Schumacher's Batman and Robin.

Because Carly's ass in the first 15 minutes of the last one was definitely targeted towards a younger audience.

Transformers isn't necessarily about a bloody, gory war. It's about robots who turn into cars. The original shows had just as much adventure. Sometimes the Autobots would travel to a different planet, and have to get back to Earth, or team up with Megatron to battle Insecticons. It doesn't have to focus on the war. And the good thing about robots, is it doesn't have to be bloody.
Depite the title, the original Star Wars wasn't really about a full war, and even when it came to that, the fighting was mostly bloodless.

Darker doesn't necessarily mean losing its PG-13 rating. Darker implies tone, tone doesn't always mean more violence.

Worth noting that there is a BIG difference between his actual quote of "it's not a kids movie" and whatever this misleading "Is Not For Kids" headline is.

The Dark Knight was PG-13, for what it's worth.

I'm hoping that this refers to Lockdown torturing Optimus.

It's because a lot of people are assuming that "darker" somehow means more sexual innuendo and crude humor. These are people who aren't paying attention.

With Optimus changing his look at some point, this could very well be the case. Lockdown could finally be the villain that will do some serious damage. I'm hoping he doesn't get the same treatment as The Fallen and Shockwave..

Considering how simple the AOE toys are, and Hasbro is so concerned with getting back their kid fanbase for the film series, I find the idea that AOE "is not a kid's movie" highly doubtful

I'm really hoping "darker" just means Thor: The Dark World kind of dark. The sex scenes and bad language completely obliterate the purpose of Transformers: giant robots, one side fighting for peace and the protection of mankind, the other side for tyranny and domination. When you put in the other crap, it really messes with the story. I mean, humans are an important - VERY important - factor of these movies, but we don't need their foul mouths or sex lives.

Ha. Like the first 3 films were for kids... All wank jokes and swinging gonads.

Actually, I have no idea who the first trilogy were for. Bay himself?

More like the Transformers' war wrecking Earth and simply turning people into assholes. We've had a bureacrat who shut down NEST, a human who sold out his own world to the Decepticons to ensure his own survival, and now AOE has a human who's out to exterminate the whole Cybertronian race, however and whoever he can.

Sigh. I remember when Transformers didn't do this to people, it was simply bot vs bot with humans on the sidelines. Oh well, it's a harsh reality to give humans an equal place in the spotlight.
