I hope you're not working there with a plan to save money. Because it's not going to work. For obvious reasons.
If you want to stick around, on top of always showing up and doing your job as well as is possible, I'd suggest you LEARN HOW TO BUILD BICYCLES. Past the inventory and into spring, bicycles are where the focus shifts to. I worked at a Toys'R'Us for six years, and I got hired at the begining of spring(when they don't really hire anyone), because I could build and tune up/troubleshoot bicycles. As an aside, it's now been eight years since I worked there, and I am still unfazed by hearing crying or screaming children. It's amazing.
Good idea. Basic bike building skills isn't something that's difficult to learn. Need any tips PM me anytime.
Another alternative, if you really want to stay. Find out if they need anyone for 3rd shift. 3rd shift tends to have openings before anything else. You also usually start out making a bit more money. Only go this route if you're certain you can handle it, though.
I worked there for 13 months back in '03-'04. Wasn't horrible, but I found I enjoyed it more once I was assigned to R-Zone (video game section). You're out of the way of most customers and usually don't have to deal with the everyday checkout line bustle. It was like being head of my own little section, and as a video game nerd I felt like I was in my element. But opening at 5:00 AM on Black Friday? That wasn't much fun. Just be aware you won't be making much. After my first year, I got a whopping nickel raise. That's what prompted me to quit and find something I could make a career out of.
Bust your @$$,and don't call in. I started in October as a seasonal sales associate, I am currently a key holder basically running RZone. I have it on good authority ( the district manager) that I'm being kept past season.
Don't mean to sound negative. I worked winter of '99 at the now-defunct Toyco at the Grapevine Mills Mall. It was like freaking 'Nam or something after Black Friday. Even lost a front tooth to a bitch of a customer who was mad we didn't have any Gameboy Colors in the color her little brat larva wanted, which I didn't manage to get fixed for thirteen years because my worker comp claims were denied and my grandma finally decided in recent years to bankroll my dental repairs. So I spent a decade+ looking like a hillbilly with no front incisor. That's kinda soured me on face-to-face retail. Don't know how TRU is, but if you enjoy it and your employers treat you good, more power to you. I'll personally stick to dealing with people through the phone.
The bike building is a great idea. They come 85% completed and like others have said are a big focus in the spring.
Ahahaha, what one 5:00 am opening a year? Try 5:30 am starts every Saturday and Sunday for a couple of years in my last job running a food factory. Even when I was a games designer when the shit hit the fan we were expected to do all nighters/6am starts as well, and that was essentially just an office job. In any job you have to expect 'early starts' it's part of the territory. And if you own a business, expect to be on call 24/7 putting in many many more hours than anyone else all the time. @Mutt12, details! Enquiring nosey minds want to know! I'm thinking it's something stupid like she pushed him in the back in frustration which knocked him over which cost the tooth, but something like that she might have just said it was an 'accident' because of the crowds or summat.
