Cybertronians just decided to cut out the middle-man in the transportation industry. Why buy a car, when you can just become one.

I like the idea of evolution and prefer primes take on the issue, with some adjusts made to it and context added, it could be a really soild reasoning as to why there gained that abillity in the first place.

Spike- "For one thing, why do you transform into cars and things?"

Trailbreaker- "Simple, disguise. Besides, it sure beats walking."

    Well said, and I agree.

Frankly, I think attempts to come up with some super important reason for transforming is just making things more complicated than they need to be. They have bodies that can survive being turned into something else, that's all the reason needed. Why bother with driving a vehicle if you can BE a vehicle? Why go to the trouble of carrying a weapon if you can BE a weapon? Why bother using a microscope if you can BE a microscope?

Like others have pointed out, that "it sure beats walking" line basically covers it. Inventing a deep and meaningful reason for transforming is overthinking. I mean, if *you* had a physical body that could support turning into a plane, would you wait around for some big fancy meaningful reason to learn how?

There have been a number of in-fiction explanations for why transformers transform, and they work well enough, I suppose. But I personally feel that the concept of transformers would be best explained by their having been created by some anthropomorphic and ultra advanced species, either created as sentient machines, or complex AI that ultimately developed true sentience. Their alt mode capabilities would have been developed for enhanced utility for their creators, and their more human characteristics (generally anthropomorphic robot forms, decorative elements such as "facial hair," gender, etc).

There are things, like yawning, that human beings do or have that we don't understand why we do them or have them or what their purpose is. Why do we have appendices?

It's a vestigal organ tied to maintaining gut flora in the human digestive system, and while many scientists believe it was much more important an organ earlier in our evolutionary history when we were digesting a diet higher in cellulose (that is, leaves), some scientists are convinced that it is still an important organ in maintaining our digestive (and thus, bodily) health.

It's good to hear you explain it. In health class, I was told it was a unless piece of meat surgeons always take out.

Nope, every part of you holds SOME purpose, even if it would have been a lot more important to your distant ancestors.

When I switch from WFC/FOC to a game like Call of Duty or Assassin's Creed, I find myself yearning to be able to turn into a truck to drive or a jet to fly across a map and get places faster.

I imagine the same applies for the Transformers themselves, if they can't transform to vehicle mode.

I've always heard that it's "safe" for doggies to drink puddles of rain water because they still use their appendix.
So I guess it serves more of a function the less you prepare your food.
