That's a given. If they said it depended on TF4 being a GOOD movie, I'd be worried.

DoTM made 1Billion, and that was without all the Chinese actors. Pirates 4 and Iron Man 3 (the latest of each franchise, and arguably the worst) still made over 1 Billion each. Even though AoE will nto have scenes exclusively shot for the Chinese market , having plenty or representation in this film will push it over 1 Billion almost assuredly.

I want to see a true reboot at some point, but at the same time I want to see the Michael Bay films end definitively; in a way where they cannot be continued.

I also want the reboot to have some of the craziness that makes some of the stories so much fun.

And I fully expect Michael Bay to be back in the driving seat. We all need to face it: Michael Bay is directing another Transformers trilogy. Not happy about it myself, but that's the way it’s going to be. At least for the next six or seven years.

Don't they always look at how much money is made anyway?

Likely because then it would mean a guarantee that TF5 & TF6 would never, ever, ever, ever happen. Ever.

It's not cynicism at all; he's basically saying one film at a time, a philosophy that Jeff Abrams and Chris Nolan swear by (Nolan was leery of doing TDKR because the third film is often the "jump the shark" installment). Plus, they don't even know if Bay will be back. Look at how nervous the Star Trek camp is about Abrams moving to Star Wars and possibly handing in his walking papers for future Trek installments.

Diminishing returns is a reality sequels and spinoffs eventually face (and TV series, when was the last time you got excited for a show's TENTH season), the more recent X-Men movies didn't quite bring in the same kind of numbers as the first two. Three films is like five seasons in a TV series: the prospect of "jumping the shark" starts to become a very real possibility, and yes, optimism does get a little bit more cautious. Now you gotta be able to answer the burning question: "why should save and quit my current playthrough of Halo, Call of Duty, or Mass Effect and go to the multiplex, which will gouge the crap out of me, when I can just as easily wait for the DVD, which I can get for a steal at Amazon Marketplace?" Instead of giving a real answer to this question, Movie Theater owners have employed stopgap pricing and forced studios to use 3D (because that worked sooo well in the 70s) and overpriced marketing campaigns that triple a film's budget, bringing us to the sorry state where a film can make 300 million USD and still "lose money" or "barely break even" at the box office.

Do I think that this will do well enough for a fifth installment? Yes. Even if the USBO performance doesn't set the world on fire (and quaternary entries usually don't), there's all those Asian and Japanese ticket sales, and the DVDs (where the real money is made half the time). So the odds of this new trilogy being realized are fairly good.

But after the "second trilogy" is over, then it needs a vacation from the big screen for a while. This is a franchise that works in cycles, like Bond, X-Men, Star Trek, Star Wars, etc, the core fanbase can keep it alive, but everyone else occasionally needs time to miss it.

Wow, long post with a lot of product placement, sorry about that.

It makes sense for them to wait and see how AOE does...I get it. But at the same time, I can't help but wounder when I hear news like this, is the movie (AOE) that bad already??? Like they know it sucks?
