Alright, here are some pics of the updated final. Adjusted finger and thumb lengths. Still looks good for gun/tower mode since the two finger sets have matching lengths.
I'm just wondering, how durable are these hands? The few 3D printed items I have bought at places like Shapeways have looked good but feel flimsy. Also, how tight are the joints?
I just installed the knees today, they actually feel sturdier than the stock ones and the knee feels tight now which is nice because before mine was a bit flimsy
Very durable compared to Shapeways "powder printing" or whatever it's called. My printer melts down regular ABS plastic and forms it in layers, which ends up being pretty tough.
Newer hands look just awesome!... are you planning on any other upgrade for Metroplex in the near future?? I would like to wait to order all Metroplex upgrades together in case you do
I'm working out some adapters to get his shoulder guns to rotate and mount other places, other than that I don't think he has anything else that needs fixing (that isn't being covered by other groups).
Gives me renewed hope that I might one day see real versions of a couple of designs I was tinkering with.
These look awesome but I have one request. Can you balljoint the knuckles at the base of the hand so you can spread the fingers apart? If not that is cool but always thought bots should be able to do that. Jason
A ball joint would be the easiest solution but if that does not work there is another way around it but it would make that knuckle its own part rather than molded with the hand.
I've honestly been waiting for someone to do something like this for a while. Transforming hands (and heads) have really been something which Transformers in general have stayed away from (Headmasters aside), even if it would make sense from a disguise perspective to further conceal two of the most obvious types of robot-mode kibble. The closest thing to date had been the Energon combiner hands and feet, and they weren't exactly shining examples of the engineer's art.
That's brilliant! The tower mode is great, the cannon mode doesn't QUITE work IMO but it still looks better than just having a hand there! If Hasbro had given him hands like that I may have actually bought him.
News is I'm not doing it, sorry. I've got a bunch of people that have ordered them as is and screwing with what is a solid design isn't going to happen at this point, I just don't have the spare design and print time. Maybe in the future after orders die down.
No worries man. Just wanted to check and see. I will probably order a set here soon. Any suggestions on smoothing out the printed layers? WJ
