Guys part 2 is being written as we speak Guillermo del Toro is currently writing Pacific Rim 2! | Pacific Rim Movie News
It's news like that that makes me get up and do this weird thrusting twist dance that makes my cats run away.
Today was a very Pacific Rim themed day for me. I recieved my Blu-Ray Limited Edition the mail and halfway through watching it, the UPS lady came with a box. Inside the box was my Series 2 Figures. I opened them and saw on Amazon that the Man, Machines and Monsters book I ordered is preparing to ship. It's been a good day.
Has anyone ordered from Amazon and already received it? If so, which one did you get that contains the original Japanese lines. Need to be careful cause the Asia release has the shitty English dub.
I got the collector's edition and it's just fine, but I'm in the US. So unless you have a Region 1 DVD/BD player, that's probably not much help.
I'm listening to the commentary by Del Toro, and it's brilliant. Every decision is deliberate with menaing behind it. This movie wasn't made, it was crafted. From little things like why Mako's hair is blue streaked, to why they have people pilotting mechs. It's not about "what would we do to fight monsters?" It's about showing people prevail, not humanity. It's not the superiority of our weapons, it's us as people. That's why the Jaegers aren't decked out with guns and gimmicks everywhere and fight mostly in melee, they're basically extensions of the characters. It's facsinating, I recommend everyone check it out on the DVD/Blu-Ray. It explains in detail and enhances so much, it's wonderful.
I thought the hair streak was a simple shout out, but it turns out it's tied to the colour of the coat Mako was wearing when she encountered Onibaba, and by extension, Coyote Tango and Stacker in Tokyo - so yeah when I get my blu-ray, it's commentary time
The Tokyo scene is a thing of absolute beauty. Onibaba emerging from the dusts and debris is like a demon rising from the pit, and Coyote Tango and Stacker in turn are bathed in the sun as the majestic heroes they are. When last Mako encountered the Kaiju, she was too small to ever challenge them. But now, within Gipsy Danger and standing over the corpse of Leatherback, the monsters aren't so big anymore. I need this Blu-Ray so much I can't even
Pacific Rim just appeals to me in so many ways. I think my favourite part of it, as I mentioned in an earlier post, is the fact that when there are no heroes in sight, they built their own. That these titanic mechanical achievements can make even the smallest child big. When the monsters rise up, when the destruction comes in fire and storms, the only thing you can do is get out of the way. But when you're in the Jaeger, you don't have to run. You can stand up in the wind, stand up in the flames, stand up against the monsters. You can resist. You can fight. You can win.
It's deeper than that. The dominant colour of Kaiju is blue, and that even was so pivotal in her life, the blue stained her "heart" as Del Toro put it, and her hair represents that moment carried with her. Deep down in Mako, there is a child Mako driving her to do all she does, just like Mako is driving Gipsy. He described it as a Russian doll. Peel enough layers back from the giant robot and it's that little girl from back then acting out her revenge on the monsters. That not only took her family in the past, but in the present when Cherno and Typhoon both fell. She was a major part of the Jaeger program, and knew those pilots. That's why we never saw her actual family, he didn't want a dominant image or for us to think she was only ever remembering her childhood loss.
^^^ While I admire Del Toro's intentions, I still wish a little extra time could have been spent on the Chinese and Russian pilots to indicate that they were 'like a family'. If I recall correctly, there was supposed to be at least one scene of both groups interacting with one another over loud music or something to that effect, but was removed from the final cut of the film. Maybe there will eventually be an extended cut? Also, that deleted scene with Chuck and his son should not have been removed, I think it adds a lot of context to the scene in the latter half of the movie where they say their goodbyes to each other.
It's so nice to see a thread with adoration and actual discussion of a given topic. Now that it's out on disc, it's time to see Pacific Rim again.
