Their trying to branch Generations out into having a bit of everything for the 30th Anniversary. So even if he's the only Generations toy to represent the newest movie at least its in the big pricepoint leader role. They know some transformers collectors like the movie leaders, so there is that motivation to get into the collector oriented line.

I think this also could suggest a variety of more unusual Transformers movie lines to follow.

As for the toy itself. I'm not super impressed but I'll probably buy it. Everything is a bit more streamlined and super heroic. But it would be so much better without that electronics box for some ab crunch ratchets or some mechteching alive Armory feature. Optimus Prime needs a Jetpack. They all seem to have them at some point.

This barely looks like the CGI model... looks pretty bad in comparison to the CGI model actually.

At least I don't have to make the tough decision about getting movie toys or not.

My complaint is that even these official pics are mis transformed. The leg wheels are on swivels so should be facing the back of the legs giving his legs a more solid flow to them as opposed to HEY LOOK ITS A WHEEL!!!
Also the rest of the kibble on his back is collapsable, i see slide points, swivels, and flip joints all over that obviously aren't for the truck mode. So either he combines or hasbro sucks at Transforming toys.

There ya go to all my collectors, that is what you'll see shell warming at retail for the next 2-4 years.

You'd think Hasbro would've learned from the last lot of horrible looking figures that are still collecting dust in random bargain bins across the globe. Doesn't help that the thing looks worse than any previous Bayformer version of Optimus in the past.

So is this it...? Will Hasbro place all it's stock in this movie crap during the NYCC panel or will real fans get more info on what's to come in this "Thrilling 30" campaign?

    This doesn't look too promising.

If it's not a mistake then it's Hasbro being fucking brilliant.

Retailers will LOSE THEIR SHIT when they see new movie Transformers and will ONLY EVER want to order shittons of movie toys and would probably drop Generations and Prime and everything that's not movie.

So by camouflaging the movie toys with Generations they make sure that BOTH the kids friendly movie toys and collector's intended IDW toys hit shelves in equal measures thus preventing another DOTM style fiasco of only ever being able to find wave 1 of DOTM toys because of how ******ed the retailers were..

But we didn't even GET the new CGI model yet!

Yeah, never has there been a Leader movie figure that is such an easy pass. Guess I'll continue only buying MP releases.

Looks like a significant step backwards from the RotF and even TF1 Leader. I hope this oversimplification won't be the theme of this line. I understand the logic of it, but I think the amazing toy designs from the first two movie lines spoiled me.

It's a solid guess that the figure isn't close to the CGI model.

    Because Hasbro didn't even try...

I actually really like this figure, but I can't help but be turned off by the price. I just don't know how large of a figure it is. Plus that kibble.

But my god, is that paint gorgeous. If the paint sparkles in real life, man, it will be a beautiful toy to look at.

    I've seen it.

    That's because this is a hand-painted model.

If the toy actually looked like that in truck mode, I'd buy 1, and leave it in truck mode. But since I know it wont look that nice, I will probably pass.

Care to elaborate on how the CGI model is different from the toy?

    Exactly.

I remember G1 and G2 toys were a pain in the ass because I had to find all of their accessories and connect them, plus go gently because their windshields might break off, look for their hands to plug in or snap on, you get the idea.

That ate up a LOT of time.

I'm slow going now, because each one of these I cherish. I can transform DOTM Leader Optimus fast. I've transformed that mold so many times, it's like second nature, by now.

Kids have been given everything digital, which teaches them to be lazy to find their entertainment and enjoyment. Toys just don't have the same thrill. A damn shame.

Truck mode looks really nice, but bot mode...Jesus Christ, kill it!

Ugh, at least maybe I'll save some money...

    It's spelled "shelfwarmer". :lol

This isn't what I was thinking when I read about "simpler designs". The movie and movie line would do well to move closer to the Classics designs and transformations.

There are two main things standing out to me on this figure that differ. The amount of random kibble is outrageous. The CGI is way more sleek than this. And secondly, a huge design point of the CGI model is his new shoulder design. They are big rounded pads essentially that really adds to the samurai feel. Here on the toy they basically don't exist.

The way the whole rear axle/fifth wheel assembly folds into the back too and here it's not even trying to fold at all.
