Sam Smith - Hasbro ⚓️ on Instagram: "SS-102 TF7 Rise of the Beasts Optimus Prime “POWER IS PRIMAL” I just realized this is my first time sharing an Optimus Prime figure with you all, and I couldn’t think of a better version to debut. Introducing the ROTB Buzzworthy TF7 Optimus Prime! Based on a licensed modified Freightliner FLA, this partial figure does an amazing job of bringing the movie vehicle and character to life with unprecedented proportions and articulation. Despite being listed as partial tooling, the only thing that was preserved from the original SS-38 figure were the translucent windows, and the wheels. Everything else on the figure is 100% new. This figure is an engineering marvel. Traditionally a voyager scale figure is assembled across 9 different molds, but this Optimus is very cleverly constructed using 4 new molds. Yuya at TT is an absolute legend for finding such a creative execution for this character, and solving it so well. Our team was absolutely blessed to have our partners at TT pouring so much love into this design. This figure is uncompromised, and offers masterpiece rivaling complexity and articulation at a Voyager scale. The deco on this figure balances some traditional movie Optimus colors, with some delicious metallic highlights. Due to the low tool count, a number of the ABS parts needed to be painted in order to correctly match the mechanical detailing and body colors, So if you are asking yourself, “why wouldn’t they have just molded X part in X color”, that is likely the reason why. I have to give a shout out to @naveskoorb for forfeiting an Optimus figure, and entrusting me to take one on. I can understand why he’s your favorite :D. NOTE: I won’t be sharing full Screen to Toy asset breakdowns prior to the films release out of respect to our studio partnerships. What are your thoughts on ROTB Optimus? Is he an upgrade for you over the previous SS-38 Optimus? Share below in the comments!"

Definitely not a Masterpiece-level vehicle mode, that's for sure. The current Hasbro design philosophy of "fuck the truck bed" sure is interesting though.

The robot mode is nice, and the design overall isn't bad, even if the movie vehicle is definitely overdesigned with all the extra crap going on.

Hot take, as compromised as that truck is.
Is SO REFRESHING to see an actual FL chasis rather than the same boring Marmon truck Hasbro has been doing over the past 10 years.

This figure is near perfect in my eyes. I hope they'll do a better paint job in the future.

That shot of the reused parts from SS38 is great. Literally wheels and windows. What they’re able to do with partials at this stage is getting kind of crazy, and the hyper efficient mold usage is really impressive.

"Masterpiece rivaling complexity and articulation" is a massive stretch.

Maybe one or two more molds could have made the back of the truck look less atrocious. SS102 has a vastly superior robot mode to SS38, but that gap is equal and opposite when it comes to vehicle modes, made even moreso because 102 is a smaller scale truck (not drastically, but it is a smaller scale truck), which is unfortunate as SS38 was about as small as you could go and still look close to being right next to deluxe cars. Plus, perfect weapon storage on SS38. Really hope a 3rd party or Shapeways artist can make a sleeper section that can plug into the back and convert to a shield or weapon or something and maybe hold a gun or bigger arm blaster too in order to somehow salvage the truck rear, because it looks terrible, especially in pics next to SS38 truck bed.

Problem is that the new one only looks good from the front, and that's just if you ignore the massive hinge joints and lack of mirrors.
I will say the bot mode proportions look really good, and I'm shocked it's taller than SS38. I'm just not willing to sacrifice half of the figure to get a better bot mode.

Unfortunately adding more on to the already compromised truck backend wouldn't do it any favors.

Hmm... After seeing these pics I'm now contemplating replacing my SS-38 with SS-102 and just giving him SS-38's blaster.

This all depends on how readily available the figure is.

Well that explains alot and answers many of my questions. I think its great as is but it definitely sets a new standard. In the future a retooled pair of legs could take this and its alt mode to the next level and allow for a trailer. I really like how the torso compares to BB SS Optimus, but the back of the truck is still really bad. I picked up a mainline ROTB yesterday, but haven\'t decided if I\'m going to crack him open and keep him or not, His obvious feet on the back of the truck hitch are pretty bad, but I\'m not sure they\'re any worse than the SS version. Movie figures can\'t get the back of the truck right at all. At least he doesn\'t have visible hands like Sourge or Battletrap, I guess...
