"We’re encouraging customers to redeem their gift cards and vouchers as soon as possible."

that's ominously bad - it's been shambolically run for a good while, so it's no surprise - massive disappointment, but no surprise at all...

Was at the York one before Xmas and the entire Lego section was missing. I guess Lego HQ saw the writing on the wall and pulled their stock early.

Swindon was well stocked with Lego when I went in the other week to nab the Exclusive SW Lego Cantina.

York however was on the "To Be Closed" list back then: Toys R Us releases categorised list of its plans for stores | Toy World Magazine

similar happened at Bristol Brislington - Lego was stripped out long in advance of the closure - however, I don't think they've been recalled by Lego - I think they've been internally moved to other stores that are staying open - last time I went to Cribbs Causeway (the other nearby one), they had a lot of older, higher value stock that I've never seen before (GB firehouse, simpsons house etc), so that might be what happened - even in these tough times, lego sells well for them, so it would make sense to do that...

Makes sense guys. Yeah the York store has seemed dead for years so I'm not surprised it was due for closure whatever happened. Being right next door to a slightly-more-reasonably-priced Smyths won't have helped it.

It's effectively a shutdown of the whole business. Companies can emerge from bankruptcy (see: Marvel). I'm not aware of any similar successes once the administrators are called in.

Oh dear. I haven't been to a branch in years, mostly because I stopped buying domestic releases, but it's terribly sad to see TRU go.

‘Tis the end of an era, but it really is down to their reluctance to evolve. I will have happy childhood memories, and the feeling of getting Hasbro MP10 there back in 2013 was great too.

Administrators can try to salvage a business or sell viable components on. After Woolworths entered administration its online presence was sold on and reopened a few months later, although it's since been rolled into another brand (Very.co.uk).

It is similar to Chapter 11 in the US, but does have some differences...

Well, the company brought it on themselves and that's coming from someone who worked their a few years back at the holidays. Their prices are nuts compared to stores less than a mile away. Why pay $5 extra on a toy when you can get it at Walmart a mile away??? Their online counterpart is horrendous too.

While the job losses is of course for those affected the site itself just isn't very good TRU UK isn't like the US stores, we didn't even get lines like Figuarts.

Maybe they should stop jacking prices up higher than every other retailer.

This is what happens when you expect people to buy up peg warmers before putting out the new product. Last time I went to toys r us, they barely had any real transformers. Just a bunch of one steps and maybe some Titan Masters.

Sad news. I have been going to Toys R Us my entire life. Granted, I also shop at other stores, but TRU was the definition of a toy store to me. I'm really bummed to see it go.

    Sad but not unexpected.

Honestly compared to the US stores our stores were always kinda shitty. We rarely get exclusives or collectables and when we do they are overpriced to fuck. £80 for MP Bumble Bee?! no thanks. It's also more then transformers if your into the collectable PowerRanger stuff the only Legends toy I've seen in a toysRus was the wrist communicator. No premium zords or helmets etc.

Honestly they just got beat at there own game. Smyths is cheaper and the Entertainer chain is in almost every shopping centre so who (think parents) want to make the trip to TRU when the same stuff is at a closer store? even Mother Care kinda beats them in baby gear and their game section is a grave yard in Manc... unless you want overpriced AAA games packed into a small corner.
