EDIT: Apparently it's in Japanese only, no subtitles. It's not even in HD; it's just SD in NTSC video, so it's really just for the sake of fewer discs and better compression.

Well, this got a lot less exciting fast.

 

If it was the English language version, they wouldn't call season 3 "Transformers 2010." Why would they release a non-Japanese language version there anyway? Who would it be for? Also, they list Japanese voice actors for the cast.

 

It's also missing the three Headmasters episodes. The entire series should be 98 episodes.

 

I thought this would be some confirmation or heads up that someone was gonna finally do g1 on blu-ray. Wich not a day goes by in my life I wish they would. So nothing here lock this thread please.

 

Well, there's something to see here if you want to watch the Sunbow series in Japanese with no English subtitles.

 

No. Why would anyone want to see that? I just want the g1 series done on blu-ray and that's all. I'm sure one day it will be done.

 

Because maybe somepeople speak Japanese and could watch/enjoy it?

It's also Transformers news regardless, so just because you don't care about it doesn't mean it's any less valid.

You may be waiting a while. Not many older animation series are available on blu-ray, and getting HD-level quality out of the series would be difficult, especially considering the kerfuffles with video quality vs. animation mistakes in past DVD releases.

 

You'll never get a "proper" HD Blu-Ray release of the original Transformers cartoon. The effort in a PROPER restoration will not be justified by the expected profit to be made. Physical media sales growth has also stalled; again, the level of expected profit will not justify such effort.

The best you'll get is something like this - SD episodes on blu-ray discs.

 

Well it still doesn't matter because I don't speak Japanese and I flat out don't care about it.The title of this thread is misleading and should be changed imo.

 

Devil's advocate (as I don't necessarily disagree with the quoted post above): Wasn't the animated movie recently re-scanned in 4K and released on blu-ray with a new restoration? If there's a market for the movie, maybe the series would be worth doing?

Furthermore, any new HD re-scan wouldn't necessarily be done solely with physical sales in mind. Many HD upconverts are done these days with streaming as the number 1 motivator, and any profits from physical sales viewed as an added bonus.

Just out of interest, what's the current state of the archive? Are the original animation cels available to be filmed/scanned from scratch, or would it just be a case of re-visiting the film negs?

While I'd prefer the former, the latter would presumably be relatively cheap, No? Just run the negatives through a scanning machine. Lots of film correction/artefact removal can be done automatically these days.

 

I'd take this. Can't stand my Madman DVDs being a smidge taller than the Madman blu ray of the film. Bonus points if the covers are uniform with some version of the film or it is included.

As far as I know, G1 should have been mastered on film. If that is indeed the case, an HD remaster is quite easy to do, assuming they still have the masters.

The only concern then is the error corrections that Shout! Factory did - I assume they were digitally corrected rather than corrected on a film copy, so those might need to be manually redone.

Now that's just flat-out wrong. Physical media sales may be shrinking but you've got to considering that if they made an HD remaster, they could sell it to and stream it on stores such as Amazon Prime, Netflix and iTunes, with the Blu-Rays as only one of their profit avenues.

I honestly believe it'll happen at some point, provided they have film masters. It's just a matter of when. Now, I doubt they'll go frame-by-frame as Funimation started to do with Dragon Ball Z (but eventually scrapped because it was too expensive), but you can automate the scanning and cleaning process of the original masters (or negatives or whatever you're using), so it should theoretically be feasible for a relatively inexpensive cost.

I assume it's cheaper for them to release all the episodes on just a few Blu-Ray Discs than on several DVDs. They're also likely uncompressed, so it'd theoretically be the highest-quality (video) source for G1 we currently have.

I don't think he actually learnt that though. It sounds like he still thinks throwing a tantrum over news he doesn't like is perfectly reasonable.

Release dates are February 7th 2018 for the regular edition and December 6th 2017 for the limited edition.
