John Cena Joins 'Transformers' Spinoff 'Bumblebee' (Exclusive)

The story is set in the year 1987, where Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town. Charlie (Steinfeld), on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken. When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns this is no ordinary, yellow VW bug.

Travis Knight, who directed the stop-motion movie Kubo and the Two Strings, is helming the new film from a script by Christina Hodson (Shut In). The movie project is the first spinoff in what the studio hopes will be a Transformers Cinematic Universe that will include prequels and offshoots from a line of movies that have generated more than $3.7 billion worldwide. The most recent film, Transformers: The Last Knight, hit theaters June 23, and has earned $568.9 million worldwide so far


Hasbro’s Brian Goldner and Stephen Davis, Lorenzo Di Bonaventura, Steven Spielberg, and Michael Bay are producing Bumblebee. The film kicks off production today in California. Paramount has set it for release on Dec. 21, 2018.

Cena, known for his work as a star WWE wrestler, has been building up a notable acting career in the past few years. He was most recently seen in Doug Liman’s The Wall opposite Aaron Taylor-Johnson. His other credits include Daddy's Home, Sisters and Trainwreck. Also serving as the host of American Grit on Fox, he will next be seen in Daddy’s Home 2 and Kay Cannon’s The Pact with Leslie Mann. He’s repped by ICM Partners.

Well, for once I definitely can say I didn't see him coming.

Unless I'm late on this, the synopsis (if true) gives us a name for Steinfeld's character, Charlie.

 

Cena joining the cast is important news and all, but I think the bigger news is - if it's not a mistake on THR's part - that the release date has been pushed waaaaay back to December 21st, 2018 instead of June 8th.

EDIT: Looks like the release date has been changed. THR specifically calls it out as a "new release date."

Ooh, good catch there. This would also confirm that Bee will be a VW bug.

 

It's probably a better release date, not being sandwiched in between Deadpool 2, Incredibles 2, and Jurassic World 2, but it's still competing with Aquaman.

 

John Cena? Wtf. I haven't watched any of his movies, is his acting any good? And Steinfeld's character is Charlie. And Bee is confirmed as a VW bug. And the release date is pushed all the way back to December????

 

Poor guy. He's made huge strides akin to Dwayne Johnson in way of becoming a "real actor", but also like Johnson who did too many of those awful Disney flicks, guess he evidently also has to take on some kid-centric shite to tally up some more movie credits.

Not gonna see a single Transformers movie until they start making movies OFF of Earth.

 

I\'d love to see John Cena fight bumblebee, muscle vs metal.   

 

The plot sounds like the beginning of the G1 Marvel comics, with Charlie being Buster.

I'm guessing Cena will be a voice actor (especially since we are unable to see him anyway  ).

Unless he voices one of the bots, this makes me significantly less excited. I just can't take him (or the Rock, for that matter) seriously on-screen.

 

you know what? i'm down for this....regardless of how you feel about his wrestling character this dude is funny as hell....
