Transformers Universe Online Game In-Game Footage

Posted on 08-06-2013 at 04:29 PM by Sol Fury under Video Games
Youtube user MrTvii has posted some footage of the Transformers Universe game from Jagex. This game, which was in development for some time as a Multiplayer Online RPG before being announced to be converting to a League of Legends style Multiplayer Online Battle Arena has been quiet of late - this footage shows a look at what the eventual game might be like, if and when it is released.

Check out the footage below:

For a browser game it looks pretty good. However, that camera control seem a bit off, and I hate how the cursor is blatantly visible around the reticule. Also, no transforming? Et al?
Thundershot
Sweet! That... IS coming to the US right?
Thundershot
Oh crap! Browser based? Damn... I was hoping they'd put this out on gaming consoles. I'd be all over that...
edgs2099
Honestly, it looks terrible.

There is transforming. I'm further into the video, and one of the opponents just transformed and drove away to escape death. Further into the video the player transforms into a motorcycle, too!

For a browser game, this doesn't look too bad at all. I DO hope that poor framerate is because of this player's crappy computer - if this is what it runs like for everybody I can't imagine it being fun for long.

The player transforms into a motorcycle later on in the video as well as what Digilaut said.

Agreed. I wouldn't be surprised if it was either really. But I do like the looks of this game. Being a roleplayer on the forums though, I just wish they had a roleplay mode where there's much more story, some fighting, and better customization.

Well, you might be sad to know that this was originally planned as an MMO. Not terrible long ago they announced that "People don't want to customize characters, they want to get out there are kill". So they gutted it and now you have this hollow shell that'll be shut down within a year.
Tripredacus
It seems a lot of people who are playing that game are playing it like any other FPS, and not really taking advantage of the transforming aspect.

Tell me about it i sortof want a Defiance style Transformers game.
Optimus Prime
This looks like someone just recorded Beta gameplay; I played the Beta sessions and it looks pretty much the same. It was a fun enough game, though the camera was weird. It's been months since I've heard anything about this game, and with a whole bunch of people being laid off from working on the game I figured it was dead in the water at this point.

+1, I wait massive multiplayer transformers game look like FOC without cheaters and with beautifull gameplay, quests and big fun, but this... Is very terrible.
Moreover browser....
Aernaroth
Weren't they converting it to a MOBA format?
Hot Shot.
I'd be somewhat bothered with how bland and uninteresting it looks if I thought the game was ever coming out.
Dirge121
Wow, that looks kind of awful. Choppy framerate ignored, just a very dull looking game.
StrifeZ
Impressive game back in 2007.

Oh wait its 2013? FML...

Giant Robots fighting in Human cities that are eerily deserted because there are actual no humans populating them needs to stop. They make for bad games. It looks appalling. And it isn't fun to play. If you're gonna have a city and not have people in it, what's the point of doing it on earth at all?

Oh that's right. Because its cheap. Just like this game.

You..you DID watch the video right?...like you know..how he SHOWED OFF THE TRANSFORMATIONS IN THE VERY BEGINNING?! Seriously, actually watch the video before commenting.
Primacronus
Looks like another SWTOR. PASS. Also, hmmmm is it gonna be $14.99 for membership? I'm better off playing FOC and WFC
Sludge
Wait, this is still coming out? LOL

I remember them saying at Botcon 2011, that it would be released in 2012. I've missed a lot.

Actually this I understand because without proper processing power animating all those people in the city would get ridiculously difficult. On top of that people would wonder why you can't kill the random people in the crossfire and then if you could they'd have a different rating on their hands.

That said, the game looks bland and awful, the loss of customization just means you're a generibot with no context. I'd rather just play the FoC multiplayer where I CAN customize a robot and have better gameplay to boot.
Unicron9
Looks like pure DOG SHIT to me.
Always nice when the license is yet again wasted on trash.

I mean yeah this is exactly why. Because they don't want to let you / you won't be able to wipe out large numbers of civilians.

But that just speaks to the awfulness of the idea in general. Massive robots fighting in human cities need context or they just look like toys playing between a bunch of cardboard boxes. Little humans running around gives it scale.

But since we can't have that, it's a terrible idea, and shouldn't be done. Keep the transformers on Cybertron until its decided otherwise. The fact they are massive relative to humans is irrelevant everywhere except Earth, so there is no need to bring it up.
BB Shockwave
Primus, Bayformers and its panelforming got nothing on this game! Most awful transformations I have ever seen in a TF game. Seriously, TF Tatakai was better at it than this. Check when Vectron transforms into a jeep, he basically glows black and then huge panels come out of him and turn around to form the vehicle. LAAAAZY.

Also, why does a TF game have abilties called Cardinal Sin and Saint's Mark - with halos and crosses in the icons? Did the populace of Cybertron got converted by some Jehova's witnesses who snuck aboard the Nemesis when Team Prime left the planet?
Slimshadow457
As a bilingual guy who understood everything... You're not missing much from the commentary. Trust me.
ryceball89
Had such high hopes for this game... Did someone start a petition to turn this to sh*t or something?

They took the whole "Healer in an MMO = Priest" concept a bit too far.
Kylehudson14
Hmm, I dont know what to think. This is what I have to say...

It looks fairly good, good enough graphics for me. The bot designs are really cool, start from basic show character models then heavily changed to differentiate. I like that. I just hope the gameplay isnt jumpy & laggy like it shows in his video, that would be terrible. We'll see I guess, just hope there still working on it.
BooyakaDragon
Still steaming over the change from MMO to MOBA.
Prime Jetscream
Just as I started to load the video, I daydreamed that it would be an MMO again, and everyone would be like "THANK YOU JAGEX!"

;_;

I wonder what the guy who decided to make it a MOBA is thinking right now, because he just obliterated any chance of this game being good.

For the record, ROTF did it (in campaign only, however). And you can kill them.

This.

This looks vaguely familiar... To tell you the truth, I couldn't even finish the video; I have lost all interest in whatever this is. There's still the alternative:

They hired the former art director for the GTA series, and he somehow convinced them to completely change the game. The games was already a year into development by that point.
thewiredknight
I've been reading constant horror stories about how bad things have got for this game.

Back in July several Jagex members on the game were laid off (this is fact). But I've also heard rumors that the team is in a panic because they have had to change engines recently in addition to the pressure to make certain teh game is out by the end of the year (wouldn't be surprised if Hasbro is pushing them given how belated this game is and how forgotten it has become). The second reason I think there may be some credibility to this is because Universe was meant to be tied to the Prime continuity, but in the time it's taken them to get this out, the series it is set in is over and done with so they've lost the tie-in that the franchise practically lives on.

The game is completely underwhelming and a poor use of the license. They promised some story and involvement with the TF world but so far haven't addressed this at all either in gameplay or questions. They completely misread the fanbase thinking that collecting toys is equivalent to collecting generic robots in a moba to whom you can form no particular attachment since you die and then select a different bot to play as in the group. The game is lifeless due to a lack of setting.

This is NOT the case with the ROTF game which had an established setting in the movie verse and gave you characters you knew or were already familiar with so you had an attachment to it. The High Moon games did the same establishing a clear campaign and characters you knew but also the ability to create your own if you wanted (I'm still proud of my eight-wheeler wheeljack, looks freaking hilarious).

Having spoken to some Hasbro reps at Comic-con (conversation originally began regarding the IDW figures) Hasbro still seems (contractually?) optimistic about the game and so were a lot of people even AFTER they switched out of MMO format. But that was before footage started leaking and now what little buzz was left (due to a lack of promotion by Jagex) is dying due to lackluster footage.

Part of the problem is switching form MMO to MOBA is a HUGE change in terms of demographic - so some more casual fans who can play an MMO (which allow for solo play and have a lower skill barrier of entry) cannot as easily enjoy a shooter or MOBA where they aren't invested in contextless deathmatch.

Transformers Universe has become both a disaster of design and marketing at this point.
mirageandjazz11
is it bad that i forgot about this game a long time ago?
f-primusunicron
ok, i actually like how it looks, dont bother me so much the framerate, and the stile, design, browser based, the look of the background and almost everything looks fine for what it is...but no customization? DAH FOC?
i mean, really, that is why people want to play this game, i mean, everything else is in FOC and WFC, story and well multiplayer and kill a bunch of people, if this game doesnt offer a much better customization tool than any other game, i dont get whats the point on playing it
oh, and that change from mmo to moba, i so frigging dont get it but dont hate it either
i mean, lets be honest, the game would have been much better for pc/consoles, but for a browser game that is free(hope they doesnt change that)
i think it looks pretty good, but no customization, that really, really kills it for me
i play cosmic break, the game has almost no story, and the graphics look good but not the best, but you can actually change parts, colors, weapons, add some abbilities, and the gameplay is really smooth and easy yet challenging and pretty fun...yeah the game still lags a lot but still fun enough to be played everyday(at least i do)
Vampyr
the player's comments are annoying as hell...had to switch the sound off...its even worse when you do understand it
as for the game itself...well, its look like a beta multiplayer game of the 3dr movie games, which is not good at all
Thenames9
It looks really boring to be honest. It just looks like a cheapened version of the ROTF and DOTM's lovechild.

Nope. And after the official announcement that making a character from scratch plus full customization was removed from the game ... I removed myself from the game as well.

They didn't hammer the last nail in this game's coffin, they rail-gunned that sucker in.
unicronic
Frame rate looks awful.

Also it isn't really a browser game, it is no-doubt deployed using tech like Kalydo which allows the full game experience without having to download GB's of data first.

Transforming looks very muted in this game.

I suspect this will end up meeting a spark eater.

Honestly, you're kidding yourself if you think an MMO would have had more longevity. Besides WoW, they're known for being exceptionally short lived.

There was transforming at will, but an incredibly boring game. Browser performance was better than I expected, but still limiting.
seanb47
I wondered what happened to this.I had high hopes for it but after seeing this,....Why?Death matches are so boring.Give us something with content, background story, awesome graphix and transformations!
Shipmeadow
oh has the nda been lifted on this game?
because let me tell you it's even worse than it looks
yes, the frame rate is that bad and the camera is strange as all hell. they couldn't even get the shooting part of it right. instead of simply clicking and shooting a shot there's a charging mechanic to pull off an effective shot, precise timing + unbearable lag = frustration. the only saving grace is that you'll never be able to find a match anyway, so spend your time doing something else literally anything else.
Boulder
Another generic FPS and another Transformers game where transforming doesn't play into it at all.
Ribieconvoy
Wait, I completely missed the memo on the game being changed so radically. So is there indeed no customization? Because that would be a deal breaker for me, since it was the most unique part of the game.

It's gone. Everything that people were super hyped about has been ripped from the game.
Jagex's Transformers Universe MMORPG puts the toy box robots onto the battlefield | Features | Edge Online

“Transformers are about war; they’re about action. They don’t carry gold, bake bread, catch fish, cut down trees. But for all they take away, they throw open so many more opportunities,” says Horton about the reasoning behind the retooling. “Maybe there’s more in a selection of characters and abilities, and the strategy in that, than there is [in] levelling a character endlessly and going through fuck loads of boss battles.”

and yeah, form what i can tell...the dude is a completely idiot(can somebody pleas use a "better" word to describe him?)

at least we now who to blame

ALEX HORTON

"So when he first saw Transformers Universe last year after joining Jagex as chief creative director, he knew it had to change. Partly because of what would work for the brand – it’s hard to customise an intricate robotic avatar like you can a Tauren or dwarf, and aren’t toy Transformers all about collection? The other part was down to what’s popular in MMOGs today: they’re not only about World Of Warcraft and RuneScape any more. The short-session, highly competitive likes of multiplayer online battle arenas (MOBA) and World Of Tanks are driving a new vision of enormous, connected and deeply committed communities."
thunder117
Feels like Counter-Strike in this sorry state.
Dolza_Khyron
it looks like a game i wouldn't even be interested in, if it wasn't transformers. and that is bad. lol

it can't be THAT hard to make a proper transformers mmorpg. but no, this looks to be basically any other first person/third person shooter on the market. just with transformers in it.

i will probably play it. for one day, and go back to playing tera, or neverwinter, or something.
