Transformers: Universe Developer Interview By Game Informer

Jagex; developers of Transformers: Universe MOBA recently sat down with Game Informer for an interview.

It is clear from the interview that the game is undergoing some drastic changes from what we fans initially thought it to be. First, the game went from an MMORPG to an MOBA. Now, new information is regarding the character customization aspect of the upcoming game.

In what ways can you create and customize your character? Do you play a single Transformer, or multiple characters?

Horton: Full character customization like you see in MMORPG’s can’t really be all that varied for a car that has to transform into a robot smoothly and also perform as a game character flawlessly, making a Transformers character that performs its duty a challenge before you add any really worthwhile customization. Picking bits of headgear, tunic colors or adding body kits to a vehicle aren’t that straightforward in a robot-vehicle character. We have customization, but the ultimate dream of creating your own custom bot from a car of your choice is a massive undertaking that doesn’t really enhance the game that much. It’s not as cool when you compare it to having your own collection of purpose-built bots with different play-styles, handling, weaponry, and specialties. It’s in the Transformers brand DNA as a toy, something that captures your imagination as you take it on adventures, not to mention the collectability, having a cool selection of Transformers characters. Its game art imitating life.

Coupe: Absolutely – I think players will really enjoy learning more about the new characters that we’re introducing to the Transformers’ Universe. These are genuinely brand new characters that people won’t have encountered, all with their own abilities, weapons and personalities, some Bots compliment other characters, some don’t and players are going to have to learn which combinations work best together. You’ll also be able to add elements of personalization to the members of your squad, so you won’t be completely without character personalization. The most obvious version of this is the personalization seen within weapons, you’ll be able to adjust modules within these weapons to give you multiple combinations that will be unique to your bot.

YES TEAM ZETA LIVES!!!!!................I'm really holding back on the nerd-gasm here!!!

From what I've read its not even really an MMORPG anymore. You pick a team of 5 guys and play PvP skirmishes with other players. Thats it.

My interest in this has dropped off the radar.

You are correct; the game is no longer an MMORPG. It is now a MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena).

At least we'll get some new characters out of this. I have no confidence in the game, but I dig the prime art.

We'll never get those helecopter and tank vehicons.

...Or was that the Chinese game?
Drake915
This game is now worthless to me since it's no longer an MMO. An MMO would do so much better and has the potential to be a gigantic cash cow for a company. Just another TF game letdown.....
Starscream NZ
the fact it's just a MOBA doesn't make me want to embrace the game at all. I fail to see how they couldn't base the game similar to how SW:TOR works, in having the game set on various planets (Earth, Cybertron, Junkion would be good starters, expanding to Animatros etc later) and complete a number of class-based missions.

That alone would've made me instantly buy a subscription to the game. Knowing it's just PVP with little to no story makes me utterly uninterested in the game. How do I get into a game where there's no real characterisation?
wolfe
Wow. Now a MOBA. I've lost almost all interest in this game now.
VestigialHeart1
It's really sad because the original beta had a lot of potential. I only played for a few minutes but from what I saw of the graphics, design and customization it looked like they were on the right path. I'm assuming their hardware couldn't handle it. MOBA games are far less demanding on the servers I'm sure. They should have just scrapped the whole thing after that debacle.

If there are any members who are currently playing or know any info about the NetDragon Transformers MMORPG, let us know. I believe that game never went through changes despite the fact that it is the Asian equivalent of Jagex Transformers: Universe. We’d love to do a comparison.

I still have hopes for the Jagex Transformers: Universe. Jagex is known to be a good developer.
amd098
not sure moba is the right move, as moba is a dominated by the big names of LoL and DOTA
GAUGE
the TF Universe site isn't even loading for me anymore.

Something must be up with it.

They don't even send me emails anymore either. :/

I used to be like "GOD I WANT THIS NOW" and I want to still be like this, but last time I wondered about the game, I thought "Bleh, I don't really care anymore" because they screwed up a brilliant idea and made it into an inferior FOC clone.

That was the TFP console game.

I just realized I got a news credit for this! First one ever!!! Now I'm all happy and dancing and doing a jig!

So basically it's FOC or WFC but on earth, and on PC, making controls wicked stupid for an MOBA.

What failure.

I call BULL on the transforming part. All you need to do is have colour that follows with you to the alt mode and maybe some additional features such as spikes. You can kit out the robot mode to the max because you can have a Transformation sequence that hides everything from the robot mode - just have it disappear. That way you have a fully customiseable robot and an alt mode with some customisation.

The way they describe that reminds me of Team Fortress 2... especially with the personalization being stated as being the weapons. They are definitely going to make you pay to unlock better weapons.

The way he describes it as a 'squad' makes me feel that it'll just be a group of robots in a small battle arena and not an open world as i previously hoped.

Lost all interest in it now.

I would'nt be suprised if that is just a customised robot made to promote the whole customisation factor that will likely never be achievable in the game.

Pretty sure they stopped doing the emails when it changed from an MMORPG to an MOBA - especially seeing as most people signed up for the Beta when it was an MMORPG
As for the website, its not loading for me either. Just a white page that never stops saying its loading.

Agreed... i think 'Ace Of Spades' was the only good game they've done and thats just another Minecraft style game that i'm seeing a lot of knowadays.
ethically1337
I also want to add that this game will not earn any of my money as MOBA. I am very disappointed.
Pencoin
Well I'm really disappointed how this turned out. Thought we were going to get a TF-themed MMO on the level of Runescape. What a bummer.
Sludge
I was so excited for this game....... 2 years ago. I've slowly lost interest. The fact that it's no longer an MMO kills it for me.
WarConvoy
First of all I want to say that I was so exited when I heard and saw what Hasbro and Jagex were going to bring out a few ears ago.

I am now very worried about the success and if this game will see the light of day. The game industry is very uncertain right now. With the way they are treating MMORPGs and other games that have a major fan base. Good examples of this are Dark Millennium online and Aliens Colonial Marines.

With DMO it went from an MMORPG to a offline game. Then there was no word about the game for some time and then THQ filed for bankruptcy. And sold of Relic to Sega.

With ACM there is a big long story about its ultimate failure. I bet many that are reading this know and have read all about it so I will not right about it. I am so glad I did not pre-order this game. It is heart crushing what Gearbox did to it.

Ultimately until they release this game and I see it for my self I am not holding my breath.

Wrong wrong wrong. That is actually considered by fans of the original Ace of Spades to be their WORST offense. They added classes and extra weapons and other crap that doesn't fit with what Ace of Spades was meant to be. Also, if anyone gives them advice on how to fix their game, they ban them from the AoS forums. At least Ace of Spades's true fans can still play it on Build and Shoot.

Sorry for the rant. Big Ace of Spades fanboy.
Sludge
This is like Schrodingers Transformers Game!

Hope jagex pays attention to the fans. They might as well not even waist there money in advertising the game. Most want to play mmo!!!
lordmegatron64
Should've stayed with the original MMORPG. I've lost ALL interest in this game

You had a really good idea.....and you scrapped it....congrats. I'm sure there will be A LOT of people who will lose interest in this game now.
lordmegatron64
It's not an MMO anymore. It's an MOBA game.

They won't. Trust me,I'm a fan of Ace of Spades (the original, not that pile of slag made by Jagex), I should know.
edgs2099
This went from 100% interest to MAYBE 1% interest. That is also being generous. Customizing a character doesn't enhance the game enough? I might have tried it out even though it DE-evolved from MMO to MOBA. Now? Meh. Less than Meh.

Transformers Universe: Less than Meh.
KnightHawkke
Will leave this here..

I learned the very hard way after star trek online to hold 0 hopes about the content of qany future game releases, and I have been so much less let down lately.
NathimusPrime
people really know how to complain about a free to play game, and i thought we new that it was a moba along time ago?
People should reserve judgement for when they actually play!

It's made by Jagex. It's gonna suck more than an Allspark-powered vacuum cleaner.

I can think of far, far more unsuccessful MMOs than I can successful. The ratio is at least four to one.
The Honey Badger
This game and company can offically E.A.D.! Pure crap now. I cant wait till botcon and see them there. You know when someone does somthing and you dont get mad, your just like, "haha, wtf are you thinking?" Cant wait to see how this car crash ends.
Rob
shame that they went the MOBA path. Especially when you consider that the MMO route for Transformers DOES fit quite well with the MMO concept, quite to contrary of what they are saying. It was probably a matter of feasibility rather then innovation.

PS we already have an MOBA WITH character creation its called Fall of Cybertron multiplayer
protostar8
Well I lost all interest in the game now. I was really excited for an MMO and building my own TF. Now that it's a MOBA, it will be a PoS title that will fail when compared to the big boy MOBA's already out there. Epic fail...
destrongerlupus
Oh well, I WAS concerned about maintaining a life/work balance once this game got added to the mix (I don't even play a lot of games, but this seemed like the perfect storm to hold my attention)

Now I could not care less. Such a shame.

What sort of judgement should they hold off on? Most people are complaining about the game changing from an MMORPG to a MOBA. Yes it's "free". So? If they like MMORPG games and not MOBA ones, why should they bother playing the game? I can't stand MOBA style games. So why should i bother playing it if i know it's not the type of game that's going to entertain me to play it?

^This

I was willing to wait patiently and reserve judgment ON TILL they changed the genre of the game. The thing that bothers me the most is the ridiculous execuse that an MMO would not work with TF
Digilaut
An MMO could definitely work for Transformers. But how come not many people here are aware of the fact just how risky an MMO is? Nobody noticed the giant MMO boom the last 10 years? A LOT of games created, mostly thanks to the success of World of Warcraft - but most of them bombed big time.

Bottomline: it's really hard to introduce a new MMO and then keep it running. And I will bet you that Transformers doesn't have enough reach to be feasible. Especially when it's intended to be free to play.

Is it a shame it will not be an MMO? Yes, but it's probably for the better they changed it to a much simpler MOBA.
Reflector Prime
This game is really really horrible. I played it during the Beta and it's worthless. We have Fall of Cybertron, this is the same thing only about 10% the quality.
Shizuka
Has anyone just stopped caring about this game? I sure have. How about give me the next Cybertron game?
king_of_forgoten
The fact that TF has such a HUGE fanbase, literally spanning generations, means the game as an MMORPG would make money free to play or not. as for this game and its developers feed them to the sharkticons along with bay.

THIS. It's not hard. Nobody was expecting or demanding realistic, super-detailed transformation like in the Bay movies. All you'd have to do is carry over a couple elements from the vehicle to the robot mode. Matching wheels, paint scheme, whatever. FOC already did it, but their customization was shallow. Jagex had been teasing this idea of deep character customization. Their whole selling point for the last 2 years (has it been that long???) was how you could build your very own unique TF.

As have I. And yeah, that's exactly what he's describing. Squads of generic cookie cutter robots in small arenas battling it out for a few minutes at a time. No open world. Yawn. I'm placing complete blame for this game's direction at Alex Horton's feet. He's the one that came in and gutted the whole concept and watered it down to this.

If all I wanted to do was customize my weapon loadout, I could just as easily do that with the PS2 Armada game. And I'd get cooler, crazier weapons to play with there like the awesome tornado canon, the discord attack, which causes enemies to go after each other, or a tractor beam to whip enemies all around with. Crazy ass fun!! From what I've read about the weapons in Jagex' game though, it doesn't sound like they have anything that inspired.
ian5555
WoW and their silly battle arenas and other instanced areas really killed PvP with MMOs. Before it came along PvP was fun and this has really killed this game for me. DAOC imo had the best PvP system and it is too bad that the $$ and carebearism of WoW has ruined PvP in MMOs to the point where these arenas is all they seem to do. Sad.

What? No. That's a multiplayer TPS. It has like, zero MOBA elements.

Great. This creative team has just lost all my respect. "Look, we realize everyone wants to make their own Transformer. So we aren't going to put it in the game!" I used to be excited for this, and I still really want to, but its not that easy.

Of course, this makes it easy for the game to exceed expectations. It COULD be good, you know. But at the moment, it just sounds like a ripoff of Pokemon.
