 | | | Transformers: The Game Sells Well Over 3 Million Copies | | Posted on 04-11-2008 at 04:35 PM by REDLINE | RSS Feeds | | Thanks to an article by Next-gen.biz, TFW2005 has learned that only covering sales figures from North American and Western Europe alone, Transformers: The Game has sold over 3.3 Million copies. This includes each console that it was released on, but doesn't even include Australia or the Asian markets, so the TF:TG was apparently quite successful. Eric Bratcher (GamesRadar): “It's arguably forgivable that every mission is some variation on the formula, "get from point A to point B and blow up X in Y number of seconds" - but when both driving and combat are broken, it's time to transform this into some other game.” | Original article link.
King_Grimlock:
This game did nothing but make me mad! Between a hundred crashed blocking you from you objectives to the two second time limit that you had if you got knocked out of an "arena". The worst part was that I had 84% with the last decepticon level to finish and the machine froze while it was saving. Once it was rebooted, the save was corrupted!
Deceptigtar:
too bad the game was super easy and could have been better. very rushed and the destruction modeling and physics need major work. you can destroy the lower half of a building and not the top half?
General Magnus:
Is that number high?
Optimus747:
It was fun, but has no replay value. If they'd put multiplayer in, it would have been better.
tikgnat:
Yep, for games today that quite high, I think most games would be happy with sales in the hundred thousands, let alone millions.
But we do have to remember that figure is over 6 systems (PS3, 360, Wii, PS2, PSP, DS?) so maybe that figure isn't as impressive as it could be. (Halo 3 has sold over 8 million on one system).
But even so. 3.3 million sales is perhaps 3 million more than it should have... I mean this game appeared to be blatently rushed out in time for the film. I wish so much they had the balls to stand firm against pressure and release it in time for the DVD or something.
Thundercrackah:
That game was poo. REDLINE:
I hope that they take the time between movies to really get the game going, I mean, its obvious that its going to make them a lot of money, so they should give it a higher budget.

Being the 16th best-selling game of the year is a massive achievement, especially for a game that, from all accounts, wasn't very good.
Shows that licenced games still have that bulletproof pulling power; is it any wonder they keep churning them out?
Jeremy.B:
I am so mad I paid retail for that game on the 360. The robots were cool, but the physics and environment sucked.
I am hoping they take a page from Spiderman 2 and make the game more open and have bigger arenas/free roam.
Moonhawk:
I was very dissapointed with this game. Clunky controls, annoying cut scenes, poorly thought out and illogical mission structure and the graphics werent even that great. IMO this should be thrown on the pile of crap movie tie-in/cash-in games.
I sold my copy on e-bay a week after buying it and can honestly say - it is the worst game I have bought in a long long time.
TM2 Dinobot:
Shame it sold so much, even though 3.3 Mil on 6 systems is not what I would consider selling "well".
Soundwave84:
That is awesome its such a great game!
Brandon:
I liked the game, but it could have definitely been better.
Valkysas:
this kind of news just makes me hate the world. this trash outsold sooooo many great games.
Velcrohead:
The ONLY reason that this game is still in my house is the fact that I collect everything that has the Transformers name on it. If it were any other licensed character, I'd have thrown it out a long time ago. Some of the levels are just too easy, some are unreasonably difficult to navigate, and the character controls were just plain retarded. My version is for PSP, so maybe I'm missing out on something with the bigger consoles, but Transformers the game was $30 that I could've spent better elsewhere.
I'd even go as far as to say that I like the old Armada PS2 game better.
Lunar_Convoy:
Isn't amazing how a bad game can sell so well because of the licensing title? I mean look at 50 Cent bullet proof. As Transformer fan and as a gamer this game was pure and total crap. Sure the graphics were nice, and the transforming animations were cool, but the guns your TF had equiped on him were absolutely useless! Serriously, in boss battles and even in most drone fights each enemy had some sort of deflector shiled in which your ranged attacks did nothing, so your only option was to run up to them and hit them with the same damn melee combo that you use about another 1,000 times throughout the rest of the game.
If you're gonna do something that relies heavily on melee combat, at least through a variety of moves you can do. Yes I know each character had their own unique melee attack and some sort of guard breaker but that was the only combo they had.
I beat this game with the cons first, and after seeing the movie I had no desire to complete it as the bots. I didn't care about the G1 skins. Most of them just changed the character's colors (Like Starscream and Jazz for example). Even though they made G1 models for Prime and Megatron, they still played exactly like their previous selves, Megs instead of blasting a huge lazer out of his cannon still shot puny machine gun bullets and missles, and prime didn't even freaking have his gun I've heard. Thus knowing that I felt no motivation to unlock these features.
I was really disgusted with this game, I'm sorry for those of you who enjoyed it, I mean the vehicle controls were tight and flying around as an F22 Raptor and switching into a robot while destroying an airbase is fun and all, they just don't give you a lot of options how to do it.
The only two Transformer games that are actually worth playing IMO is the Transformers game that was based off of Armada for PS2, and the Jappenese Transformers Tataki for PS2. I know Tataki had some flaws, but I gurantee you that you'd have more fun with that game than this one. This game just....blows...
And while I'm at it you'll never believe this but 50 Cent is actually getting a damn sequel to his game even though it sucked! I'm sorry but that just burns my ass when companies just sell out like that and don't take their time with their games, but such is the curse of license games. Isn't it strange though that back in the 90's there were ALOT more GOOD LICENSED GAMES as apposed to today? Don't get me wrong, there were some bad ones too, but I remember playing a lot of good ones. Man..I just hope the Iron Man game doesn't suck because it looks really really cool...but then again so did this game.
Transformers the Movie For Every game console currently available= FAIL
Although I heard the DS game was all right.
Valkysas: Quote: |

| Probably because the Armada game was freaking awesome and was a real technical accomplishment for the PS2 hardware.

I have no idea why they decided to give the Cybertronians bullet based weapons in that game, even the DS versions have them using lasers.
The whole thing just felt rushed. So many things show that. Hell it's a small detail but they didn't even bother to animate Ironhide using his other cannon for his secondary weapon, he just runs around shooting from one gun. Again, even the DS version did better than that.
It was mainly that awful melee combat that I hated. Not even any unlockable upgrades or new moves.
It takes alot for me to dislike a game, especially a TF one but this one managed it. However I'm not surprised it sold so much, especially with the movie itself doing so well.
jazz4ever:
this game was fun especially the decepticon campaign blackout is awsome in the game even though it was kinda repititive after a while but still fun i love the G1 characters
Moy:
Yeah the game was on an average scale, but why was BONECRUSHER left out from the GAME?!?
Noisemaze:
Well? If it sold so well then what the hell are they waiting for? If they can pump out a new game with that *SNIP* Italian plumber every other week then they can also start making some more friggin Transformer games!!!
Kimmer:
the numbers are VERY misleading. movie games usually always do well, especially when the movie does well. the game royally sucked ass and was a total waste.
Beastbot X:
I didn't exactly think the game was the bees' knees, but I didn't think it was all that bad, either. The main console version was quite entertaining up to the final environment when there was so much debris and drones everywhere as to become SUPREMELY annoying, and I thoroughly enjoyed the DS games through and through.
Dropshot:
I never got any chance toplay the game, but I saw plent of videos, I honestly expected a little more. I always thought that it would be cool if you had to look out every time you transform, if you didn't maybe the military of massive amount of enemies would attack you. You know, to stay in disguise.

And maybe if you're lucky they'll make some kind of GOOD TRANSFORMERS ANIMATED GAME!

What are you talking about? Mario games usually don't come to the shelf unless they're well prepared, and with that series, even the worst titles are still good solid games.
Besides, do you really want the crap you'd get if Activision started cranking out Transformer game after Transformer game? Quantity does not = quality.
I'd prefer they sit in development with the next Transformers game until it's completely solid, rather than what they did with this title, which was to rush it out. If that means waiting 2 or 3 years, so be it.
SoundMaster:
woohoo.
I did get the DS decepticons game, and the Autobot game for free with some 2 for 1 deal at toys r' us, but this stuff really doesn't matter to me.
Ash from Carolina:
Skipped the game myself because the movie look has no appeal for me and knowing how movie tie-in games usually go I wisely waited for the reviews.
Wonder if the number sold covers the full price games sold or if it covers the one's the retailers have slashed the price to clear out for new games?
On the bright side with making a bit of money maybe they can green light some good Transformers games instead of rushing out a bad product to be released in time for a movie. Not like they don't have a lot different Transformers universes to chose from to have something for all the different Transformers tastes out there. Plus it would be cool to have something with big bad battles like the Star Wars Battlefront series so we could get in the thick of nice Autobot/Decepticon battles.
Deceptikitty:
I only played it to hear Frank Welker.

Enigma2K2:
... I'm gonna go play Prelude to Energon...
Zaraxion1021:
The game was really good though too.. It was one of the best movie games i've ever played
Boardwise:
The real question is, how many people kept the game after playing it?
Thundercloud:
I kept it. It had its flaws, but I've played worst games.
I think Transformers the Game was quite enjoyable, especially the Decepticon campaign. Won't replay it though.
Johnator:
I bought it the day it came out, played it for about an hour, and put it away for a couple of weeks. Pulled it out again, played it for about 15 minutes, and then sold it online. It was terrible. Not fun at all and a waste of money. I am a huge video game fan so having a Transformer game that sucked so bad was a big disappointment.
flywheels:
I bought the game for the 360 close to a year after it was released on eBay for like $15. I have to agree that it is pretty painful to play. I wanted to like it and I kinda want to play it again for the darn achievements...but when I've got so many other great games waiting to be played, the TF game just gets pushed back further and further.

If you want a look at how Transformers would look in a real fighting game, google search for DreamMix TV World Fighters. It was released in Japan for the GameCube and features some Takara characters as playable characters. You can select Convoy (Prime) right off the bat. Megatron is a hidden character within the game, and the Transformer battle scene incorporate Devastator as the background. (You can jump on him as a platform.)
Personally, I think the Lego version would work. It's great with Star Wars and presumably Batman as well.
SuperPrimalZ:
At times like this I kind of wish Hasbro didn't steal(and by steal, I mean buy back) the rights to the franchise from Atari. Maybe if Hasbro didn't, we could of had a good Movie game that didn't suck majorily, and Atari would have another franchise, that isn't DBZ, that could sell well.
I own three different copies of the game for three different platforms(PS2, PSP, DS) to see three different developers point of view on it. All sucked.
Gingerchris:
Anything that sells so well can't be bad, right? That's how things are evaluated these days, isn't it? Cash trumps quality. The rattling company piggybanks win all.
And for a game (I took a crack at the PS2 version) which had so many things to collect and unlock, how come hardly any of it was worth doing? Even less so when any of it could be found online anyway. Oh joy, another photo of Michael Bay unlocked. Even the G1 models of Prime and Megatron were rough-looking.
Those games of 'get to somewhere or kill something within a time limit' are generally pretty unfulfilling to me. Multiplayer would've saved it some though.
I'm sure many of those copies sold are happily going round and around the secondary market now.
Ceasar121:
Yeah the game blah. After the novelty of being able to transform wore off, it was a pretty weak game. Easy, the inability to choose who you wanted to play as, the weak fighting system , poor physics... it was so lackluster.

Played the 360 version for about a month off and on after it came out, then lost interest in it for a little while. Picked it up a month or so later, and finished the Autobot campaign(ending sucked ass BTW), despite getting thoroughly frustrated by the later missions.
Then I moved on to the "Con campaign, and again got throroughly frustrated. The final straw came at the end. I was playing the Megatron level where you had to go from waypoint to waypoint, destroying all the Autobot attackers at each one. I clear the first 3 points and head to the next one, only to find it was inside the base of a skyscraper, with no way to get at it. Time ran out on me and many swear words ensued. Tried it again, and the very same thing happened again. At that point I snatched the disc out of my 360, slammed into the case, and took it to the store and traded it in towards a Halo 3 preorder. Good riddance to bad games.
Frognal:
Man, the TF franchise is just begging to be made into a Super Robot Wars style game.
SydneyY:
That's a lot of unsatisfied buyers...
The game had some enjoyable parts, but mostly very frustrating to me.

| Yeah I have it for PS2. I was excited to get it not only for Prime and Megatron, but for the Microman as well. It's basically a not-quite-as-good copy of Smash Bros, but still fun. Quote: |

| Agreed. And it allows them to mix in G1 to Beast Wars to Animated and everything in between. It's a concept that would make everyone happy.

Also, the DS versions were totally awesome.
Dirge121:
I actually own three copies of this.
DS Decepticons
DS Autobots
PS2.
Autobots and PS2 sucked balls, Decepticons was really good fun.
Still, 3.3 million sales in NA/WE alone is pretty damn good.
