Transformers ROTF Game Reviewed by TFW2005 megatron2
TFW2005's Joe Moore had the pleasure of playing the ROTF Video Game all weekend and has reviewed it for us all. I also played it, and got my ass kicked on multiplayer a bit, so I've added some thoughts too.

Check out an in depth review of the hit game by heading over to the thread here: TFW2005 Reviews Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen The Game (Xbox 360, PS3).

Remember, the official Transformers Revenge of the Fallen video game is out TODAY, - right now, for all major platforms. Go get yourself a copy and get online with your fellow 2005ers!

The Transformers games you are so busy looking down at the controller, and grumbling about the gameplay, that is presents a disconnect.
Okay, comparing God of War to a movie game is not fair at all. God of War had plenty of development time, and is a COMPLETELY different game in regards to concept and combat. Secondly- you're seriously saying that Wolverine and Web of Shadows are fluid and... an extension of the character? Wolverine is nothing but a mindless combat game in which two buttons can be used to beat the whole game, and lacks any ingenuity in combat. Web of Shadows, again, is another mindless combat game that only gets points for having different moves for the black and red suits. The web-slinging, which is a focal part of being spider man, is clunky and only serves to take you in the direction of another fight.
If you're going to make a good comparison between RoTF the Game and another Movie Game, please do so with Spider Man 2 the Game, which was the only Move Game that did everything right, otherwise, your arguments are pointless.
Chaos Muffin:
May just get the strategy guide for all the chool character model pics.

This game looks fun in short bursts, and the list of achievements seem decent enough to go for. May probably buy it just to have some hi-res controllable Transformers to play around with on some rainy days.
The first game was'nt the best game, but I never got tired of tforming all over the place.

I just want one good TF game in my game library, and this seems the best pick.
Armada for PS2 is still awesome, but it's still just Armada characters.
megatronski:
wow xbox live dosent even have a game marketplace area for anything yet/
Kaijumaster:
Passing on the Console version since it's just normal activision tie-in fluff. but eagerly picked up the DS version.

I'm confused, the game is not bad by any stretch of the imagination, but seems Lacking in comparison to the first DS game. gone is the full voice acting, the switchable vehicle modes, the control scheme is changed....for the worse I think. DS Game 1 was not broke.....why did they try to fix it?
jimmynguyen41:
Wow he scored it similiar to mines....nice that were on the same lines...but yours better with pics and better grammar lol
ORIO:
Hi, my name is Freefall, and I just wasted 30 bucks on the ps2 version.

I don't play video games often, thought this would be the same as the xbox and ps3 versions but it is so not.

It might be fun... if you could TRANSFORM.

Seriously. Only time you TF is for special moves.

Time for a 360
Drew Eiden:
Great review Joe!

Can I come over and play?
Lio Convoy75:
I didn't find the controls hard to get used to on the PS3 at all. 5 minutes playing and it came intuitively. It might just depend on the types of games you do play on a regular basis as to how well you adapt to the control scheme. It IS different, but I like it and it's got a good flow to it to me.

Like it's been said, there's a lot that's better than the 1st game and a few things worse than the 1st.

Audio in the debriefing room is all over the place as far as loudness... This is a small thing that's annoying and makes for hard to hear conversations. At least on my stereo HDTV. Could be different with surround, dunno, don't have it.

Character models are well done, voice acting is decent, and it's great fun blowing up things. Car controls work very well, as do the flight controls. No screen tearing yet, graphics are equal on PS3 and 360, which shows Luxoflux put a lot of care into making their game a showcase game in the time they had. Multiplayer's a blast to play so far - I've just tried out team DM.

For those of you guys wondering if it's worth it, try it - I think there's something here all the fans will enjoy if they like shoot-em up, 3rd person shooters. This brings back the old school gaming fun of trying to get your points as high as you can make them go in the levels. Something that's been sorely missed in the last few years.

If you're on the fence, rent it, or do what I did - I traded in old games that I'll never play again at Gamestop and got it for free. Can't say I'm sad to see that sorry excuse for a Ghostbusters game go. I'm definately having more fun with TF:ROTF!
Sideswipe80:
Best Transformers game in my book. And online is addicting as heck especially with members from this board. I love this game.

I've run into a few problems so far. First...for some reason, between missions...for some reason optimus primes voice is incredibly low volumed. The rest are loud as hell. Very annoying. Also, the transformation button and firing button are the same...and sometimes i get random transformations. When i lose the lock on a enemy...i'll transform...that annoys the crap outta me...

but...i did find out a nice surprise that i didn't know before...apparently there are g1 episodes on at least the 360 version...i unlocked sos dinobot and i'm watching it now haha

I agree with everything you said there. It's fun in a short burst for the fact that it's a transformers game.

I need a 360 too brother.

PS3 has those episodes as well.
Shin Densetsu:
Great reviews guys!
imwthstpd:
ugh... if you liked the BASIC gameplay of the first game(freely walk around and other stuff) dont buy the ps2 game... has anyone reviewed the pc version yet or will i have to wait till christmas to get the decend version of the game...

the ps2 version is just a move to checkpoint and shoot enemys...and that means the camera controlls where you go and you have to follow it...you have no choice...then theres the aiming mechanism that is a target that moves around the screen when you move the right joystick.

Overall
the game sucks!!! i would rather play the first movie game...
Methos:
I haven't played thru the Decepticons yet,is Devastator still play able or did they take that out?
Grimlock1991:
ITs a good game. Take my word for it. Its tons of fun online.
-Superion-:
Got the game, and played quite a bit of it tonight. I tried about 3 campaign games, and the rest were spent online. Unfortunately, there weren't that many players playing it on Live yet (maybe the game is too new), and I really suck (couldn't kill anyone due to lack of practice), but I had a blast nevertheless. Hopefully I'll get alot better soon in MP. All in all, my initial rating for this game is probably around 8/10. I think it's a pretty solid game, although I'm still not really used to holding down RT to stay in alt mode.

Btw, Microsoft is really lazy for not putting on a Marketplace page for ROTF. Seriously, who paid those fools to do nothing?
Fonecrusher:
IGN gave it a 6, but besides that the reviews have been surprisingly good, PlanetXbox360 even gave it a 8.2 and as mentioned teamXbox gave it a 7.8. I got the game today and so far after about a 3 hour gaming session I think it's great, combat is much better (your guns are actually useful now), transformations are very smooth and the idea for transformation attacks (where you come out of vehicle mode with a special attack) are pretty awesome and useful as well.

Singe player is pretty blah, it's just mindless action but at least this time around the action is good! Just don't go into it expecting anything close to the movie plot or experience though. But as others have mentioned multiplayer is the big plus here. After driving around in vehicle mode as Sideways super jumping while transforming into robot mode landing on top of a building, than using my snipe rifle to headshot another player before taking off again in vehicle mode as I turbo boosted off the roof of the building before his friends could get me, yea after, that I realised how cool the multiplayer was lol.
Grimwing:
I almost completely bought the 360 game this morning but took it back at the last minute because $60 for a game that will be $30 in a year is not worth the complications of their $10 movie cash bonus.

I admit the deep six set piece battle and any of the devastator battles were impressive. But this game is going to sell millions of copies, I'll pick it up at the end of the road.

Wolverine is a movie game and is a FAR better game than TF2. In fact, read 99% of the game's reviews and you'll find that most people think it is one of the best licensed games out there. Web of Shadows might not be a movie game, but still outperforms this hulking piece of TF crap.

And a "movie game" can be compared to any other game because in this day and age, with the amount of money tossed a developing a game, there is no reason that a major game should suck this bad. ESPECIALLY a sequel. Instead of taking what worked and expand on that, they took everything that DIDN'T work and made it worse. A HUGE waste of $70 and my time that I'll never get back.

Did you really play the game? Cause I played it last night and it's a hell of a lot better then the piece of crap the last game was. Almost all the problems have been fixed! How did they take everything that didn't work and make it worse? I don't remember seeing the camera bouncing even more the last time, cause it stood stationary, I don't remember having to go out of my way to pick up an object just to stun an enemy so I can start damaging him and I don't remember being constantly fired at by every police car, S7 buggy, tank and helicopter able to fit on the map.
Sideswipe80:
Man some of you guys are so wrong on this game. It's a blast to play and way better than the 1st one.
Tarkyroth:
I'd very much like to see how the PC version came out (because it's the only platform I have). One thing I want to ask: can we still idle away in the areas without combat between missions? Because that's the thing I enjoyed the most. What about environments that one can interact with? Can we still pick up stuff and throw them around?

You can sometimes throw something, but you have no control of where it's thrown,9 to 10 times you'll destroy whatever you're trying to pick up anyways.

There are no safe zones, unlike the first game you can't freerom then start a mission by moving to the check point.
The missions are selected from a war room, but you can unlock freerom, though you won't have any enemies to fight.
primal-convoy:
The PSP version has been said to be so bad, that people at torrent sites have actually PLEADED to their fellows NOT to download it.

It's meant to be THAT bad.
AutobotSkids:
For the Wii : It is some fun to play, Boss fights are really fun, voice acting is good, and Sideways is hilarious! But I'm pretty sure there are only fifteen missions, and There is only one campain. Also, you can only transform on certain levels. ONLY CERTAIN LEVELS IS TRANSFORMING ALLOWED!!! WHAT A RIP!!

Bottom line, A fun game, but not at all worth fifty bucks. You'll buy it, beat it in a day, and then it will sit at the back of the dreaded "Forgotten video games shelf". Just rent it.

Oh, and by the way, to those who want to know who you can play as, you can play as Optimus Prime, Ironhide, Sideways, Bumblebee and Starscream. I haven't played the entire game though, so more might be playable. I'm praying Ratchet and long Haul are playable!

And supposedly Sideswipe is actually IN that version.

I think i made a good choice going with prototype <.<
(as a tranformers fan that really hurts to say )

But i will still rent it at least to see how it is
I rented prototype and may pick it up down the road. As a slash game it isnt bad.

I haven't even gotten around to playing the Autobots DS version yet. Been hooked on the PS3 version.

When you do, please review it and tell me who's in it. I only know that Bumblebee, Ironhide, and Create a bot are in it. I hope it is fun, cause i want to get it and Decepticons for DS too.

Apparently the "Climb on walls" button is also "Pick shit up" button, but I don't know how well it works.
Joe Moore:
You can't pick stuff up anymore. You can flip cars over, but it's pretty useless.
ease:
cool! Looks like they fixed the crappy Camera system. I took the first game right back to the store because of that(it was unplayable). I've only ever gotten motion sickness from playing the first TF movie game or watching someone play Counterstrike on a fast PC. Now that the camera seems to be fixed, plus the addition of Multiplayer,i must say i'm really looking forward to this one.

And thank god for that.
Railguard:
Well the game looks cool but I will save my money for the deluxes and maybe rent the game.
Mr.Sci-Fi:
I'll rent then probably buy when it's cheap. Not a lot of games now are worth buying at release.

I normally don't play video games, but this might just encourage me to do so!

ekocher:
i love the multiplayer part of this game the most out of everything in it just wish there was more soundwave
*Soundwave*:
Looks pretty good to me, Im only gonna order it from Gamefly (should come tomorrow). Im mainly looking forward to just playing online and maybe doing the missions out of boredom. Im not a fan of the 'non-stop' action that ive heard of from the game, but overall looks better than most games based on movies, which usually suck...a lot.
Yaujta:
I liked being able to pick stuff up in the first game. Especially in the power plant area.
This new one looks fantastic though. Probably the only thing I'm not keen on are the timed missions.
Methusalen:
I'll be picking up the Wii version of the game after I get the opportunity to play a friend's copy of the game... The first movie's game's camera killed what was otherwise a great game, so I'm hoping that they didn't mess up twice!
ILoveDinobot:
Eh it's alright. I got $10 off the movie ticket for buying my game at Walmart . I keep dying on the first mission. Same thing happened with the last movie game. These types of games are too hard for me .
iLuvM3:
if the games anything like the movie i will buy XD, Optimus got beast in this movie O_o, only died from the usual cheap shot :/, why megatron & decepticons blow. cheaters :/.

but i'm debating on the game, the price is what gets me but it seems worth it, i may buy with my next pay check :].
Emperor Zarak:
I really like the game, although controls are tricky and can't destroy everything I still greatly enjoy it
chris24jc:
Well, I have no Xbox or Wii or PS, so I'll be getting the PC version of the game.
I hope my system can handle the updated graphics. The first one played well, but slightly laggy at times.

My biggest grudge with the first game was with the controls of the first one on the PC, which I REALLY hope they tweaked with #2. Not with the buttons you press, but with the sensitivity / response of them. It made some levels REALLY hard to do. I spent hours trying to get past driving Bbee through those tunnels. I tried different configs, even a gamepad. No help. (I did finally passed it though.) I did try driving Bbee on a friends PS, and it worked MUCH better.

Looking forward to seeing the updates, and just playing more robot carnage!!! The cutscenes are nice too!
Also can't wait to see what multiplayer is like! Woot!!!

Regardless of the difficulty, I'm a completist when it comes to games, and want to play it all the way through, no matter how long it takes me, ESPECIALLY a TF game!!!
Eager to play!
Spongezilla:
I still haven't decided if i will get the Wii version of the PS2. Which one is better?
g1powerglide222:
I love this game!!! My best fried has the Xbox 360 and i got the game for him for his b-day. We played it no stop in mutiplayer mode and we also had fun playing it with gold megs and gold prime! The graphics are teriffict!! I give this game 5 stars and a 10/10
BigBadBoombox:
I picked this game up last night, and having worked for a video game company ( 2k boston, the bioshock creators) I can honestly say this game is actually excellent.

Now by this I mean that they took in the fans and critics input from the first game and modified the game thusly. Case in point, picking things up. I remember in TF1 specifically as bumblebee fighting barricade i would pick up things all the time when I didn't want to, let alone i couldn't beat ironhide as blackout due to having to pick up and throw cars at the longarms. Another sore point that is gone is the irritating "sheild system" that made using guns a moot point unless you were shooting down human military vehicles ( another thing that's gone thank god)

Now on to the slight critique of what i've played of this game so far. This game has more commands than buttons, great way they used the 360 controller to full advantage, but the short tutorial that throws you into the game can be too short. It took me a minute to remember the advanced slam and flickkick, and actually easing off the throttle correctly makes me want to punch babies as i kept having a cybertronian seizures flipping in and out of bot mode. But i just kept turboing into con's so at least there's that. And that's about it....the game has everything that the first game was missing, lost all the really annoying stuff, and added gobs of new cool stuff.

So basically I love this game, but those who have a steep learning curve be patient. It'll come to you.

Thank you Luxoflux, I appreciate all the hard work you put into this game, hope i win a poster from you, and your next project should be a TF 360 MMO with create-a-player and i'll buy it on multiple platforms!

ps. thanks for the free g1 episodes unlocks!
