Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark First Screenshots & Developers Revealed

Posted on 02-16-2014 at 05:12 AM by Sol Fury under Video Games
TransformersAnnounce_ToyFair2
Activision has sent us two screenshots to go with the announcement of their new Transformers video game, Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark. This game which will feature both Fall of Cybertron and Transformers Age of Extinction coming together in a single adventure is coming later in 2014. In these screenshots we have Fall of Cybertron Optimus Prime blasting away, and Age of Extinction Grimlock unleashing his flame breath on Earth amid an industrial area. Read on to check them out.

By way of Game Informer, Edge of Reality will be developing the console versions of Rise of the Dark Spark, not High Moon Studios. Edge of Reality previously worked on bringing Mass Effect 3 to the WiiU, and helped Bioware develop Dragon Age Origins. The 3DS version will be developed by Wayforward (Developer of games such as the Shantae series, Mighty Switch Force, Ducktales Remastered and the 2009 A Boy and His Blob reboot), and will be a Tactical RPG game.

grimmy kicks ass!

I want to play as Grimlock =p

I'm so confused right now... I mean, the trailer didn't reveal much at all regarding the plot. Just... epic voice over, guns blazing, explosions, and two universes fighting the crap out of each other.

What the hell is going on? Is it a crossover or something? An online game? Waaaaat!

Why do I get the feeling that the Aligned Continuity took a dump in the communal pool again?
WBohm
More like the awful movies are taking a dump in the Aligned Continuity.

I agree, I really dislike the movies.
Couldn't they have just kept both franchises separated?

Also if High Moon Studios is developing this, I wouldn't get my hopes up.
They've been hit hard by layoffs etc. (The Deadpool game was example to that)

I did not like WFC. Or Prime. So honestly the movies are the big selling point for me.

And no. That's not how crossovers work. You need at least two works to...cross.

Also, no Transformer inner franchise is ever that separate from its siblings.
Shizuka
IRONHIDE'S CANNON!!! The bot on the left in the Grimlock screenshot has Ironhide's movie cannon!

I think this is reusing assets from all three previous High Moon games but is probably by a different developer.
I'm weary of it, last year Batman Arkham Origins looked promising but it too reused most everything from the previous arkham games and ended up being a lame copy of them bringing nothing new to the table.

MasterZero, I think you're my favorite person on these forums, because I can relate to you entirely.

Well High Moon aren't developing this sooo I don't give a crap. Seems like they're just taking FoC game assets knocking up a few lazy new movie models, chucking them in a lazy cash grab game and calling it a day.

Another poster child product for how companies making movie tie ins loooove to abuse customers with their crappy half assed over priced garbage games.

Here's hoping High Moon have a game in the works for next year to make up for this.
Shizuka
I think the threads should merged if anyone can do that

High Moon Studios, the developer behind Transformers: War for Cybertron and Fall of Cybertron, will not be behind the Rise Of The Dark Spark. Instead, the game is being developed by Edge of Reality.

Edge of Reality worked with BioWare to develop the Wii U version of Mass Effect 3, and helped develop Dragon Age: Origins on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. According to Examiner.com, which spoke with an Activision representative at the NYC Toy Fair, the 3DS version of the game will be an entirely separate tactical RPG game developer by WayForward, which most recently developed DuckTales: Remastered.

Interestingly enough, the developer is credited for developing the 2008 tie-in game The Incredible Hulk movie which sported an open world where every building could be destroyed. This developer has so experience developing a game where the characters are larger-than-life so maybe the gameplay might have some interesting twists.

Taken from the Examiner:

Quote:
'Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark' was announced today during Hasbro's preview event for New York Toy Fair, kicking off tomorrow from the Jacob Javits Convention Center in New York City. The trailer shows the action we can expect to find in the title slated to be released this year, and can be viewed above. We got to catch up with a representative from Activision at the Hasbro event and find out some more details about the game.

'Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark' will run alongside the new film, Age of Extinction, the representative said, and will be "marrying two different universes, the Tranformers Cybertron universe and the Michael Bay Transformers universe," and players will get to experience characters from both environments.

While playing through the single player campaign, you will be able to play as both the Autobots and Decepticons. One character you'll get to play as in the merged worlds is the new Grimlock from the upcoming film.

Extinction mode, the multiplayer portion of Transformers' games, is back for 'Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark': It is now horde-based combat with over 40 playable characters. Additionally, multiplayer and single player will link up, where progression will follow you from one game mode to another, meaning the rank ups and power ups you gain in multiplayer can travel with you to single player, and vice versa.

High Moon Studios, who developed Transformers: War for Cybertron and Fall of Cybertron, is not developing Rise of the Dark Spark. Edge of Reality, who previously worked on the Mass Effect Trilogy and Dragon Age: Origins, are developing Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark and the game will be available for the Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, PC, Wii U, and 3DS.

The 3DS version, according to the representative we spoke with, is not just a simple port and not being developed by Edge of Reality. It is another game entirely, a Strategy RPG being developed by Way Forward, who previously worked on Ducktales: Remastered among other titles.

While details are limited, it certainly seems Activision is ready to go all in with the Transformers property on both console and handheld.
RipCurl
hoping for more customization options in MP but being able to use movie chassis as well.

New Game FTW
Ring3r
Oh look!

Development for the game is now being handled by a company that pays it's bills handling porting art assets to different platforms for actual developers....

Lovely.

I guess that explains why the trailer had recycled levels and models from WFC/FOC/DotM. They all used the same game engine. So this company, lacking the resources to actually make their own stuff, is taking a mix of old stuff and tossing it together, with a few new models from the new movie that probably use the same animation rigging as previous models.
King Henrik
40 playable characters in a "horde" mode and a handheld tactical rpg? I'm in!
AngryChad
I noticed there was no mention of a Multiplayer vs. mode.

Without High Moon, this game will suck
Prime Jetscream
That info on the actual gameplay sounds interesting. I'm mildly excited now...

I hope they don't go all unoriginal and just plain old copy FOC and throw in new characters and levels.
Ra88
Zzzzz-

Wait hold on a second. A tactical RPG made by Wayforward?

THIS Wayforward?

Okay, they have my interest. That might actually turn out to be a great game.
WBohm
I can barely express how upset I am over this game. FoC and WfC was everything I loved about Transformers that the movies absolutely shit on. Awesome iconic true to the character designs, interesting characters with personalities, decent storytelling, pretty much everything.

I loved the games because while the movies were shitting on the franchise I had these awesome games. Now, well, at least I have you, IDW.
Burnout
Ugh....I wish they'd have kept the movie verse outta this....otherwise it looks solid as hell. Can't wait for it.....I hope to hell there's and ids drift playable character in this.
Combaticon711
I'm almost certainly not going to buy this. I mean, yes, I liked the Movie games AND the 'X Y Cybertron' games, but this? THIS??? This just looks pathetic, that's the only way I can describe this.
Grimlock64
I'm honestly more interested in the tactical RPG for 3DS by Wayforward! Now THAT I can get behind!
Transformed
These seems like an odd pairing, movie and HMS' aesthetic. Nonetheless, I'm looking forward to this game!

I'd like to see how they handle HMS aesthetic, will they go buck wild and match match HMS work frame for frame or do their own thing, hopefully the latter. Don't get me wrong, I like what HMS has done with the Transformers and what they've given us, BUT I want to see others come in with their own take, contributing new mechanics and designs that all can draw from.

I really, really hope they drop the moving pistons and parts that HMS could NOT leave alone in the WFC and FOC games. All those moving parts made me feel the Transformers were more machines than living organisms.

A fact that has been massively overlooked! WayForward don't really make bad games, and can make playable games out of the strangest licences! Hopefully this is Fire Emblem with Transformers.
Ezilla82
I'm kinda bummed that High Moon Studios isn't developing this game, but the look of those screenshots I think Edge Of Reality will do an okay job with the game. Still I'm being optimistic.
iamalternated
I'll reserve judgement until I know more but I'm also not expecting much. Out of all the Transformers games we've had I've only liked the Ps2 Armada game and the two High Moon WFC games.
pscoop
Wait. No High Moon? I am a little worried now.
Starscreamer95
WayForward you say? I'm intrigued. If that is the case I may get Wii U, PS4 and the 3DS versions. Wii U because Wii U, PS4 because gotta have that next gen. And 3DS because WayfuckingForward.

Surely, HMS hasn't been kicked to the curb. I think HMS isn't involved because they're busy working on something else...#$%^!&* Cybertron for sure

High Moon laid off half of their people (partially) thanks to poor performance of the DOTM and Deadpool games. Some key people responsible for WFC/FOC left the company (including art lead Jim Daly, met him at a conference a while back - great guy!). Even if High Moon worked on this I doubt it would match WFC/FOC.

My hopes for this game are low. Trying to tie a move adaption game to a more succesful game through assets recycling? No thanks...
Wikkid
Sooooo, can we assume that the story will be consistent with WFC and FOC cause the movieverse isn't even consistent with itself.

I just hope they take some notes from WFC's online rather than recycle the crap that was FOC's. I don't think it's alot to ask that the characters don't stick to every object in the game including the sky.

But, they are machines.. sentient machines. The sliding panels and such was the one thing I thought HMS did right, it gives the characters more life..

yah. they need to drop that havoc physics engine and go back to physX or whatever they were using in WFC

I'm liking the sound of the 3DS game.

This is disappointing news.

I hope to be enlightened come Monday.

Wayforward huh, I think I might be picking up another 3DS game.

Console version doesn't inspire much confidence though.
soymonk
I'd be down for a tactical RPG for my 2DS. Gameplay over graphics though!

Can't we just agree that both TFP and the movies aren't that good?
I'm okay with the WfC/FoC stuff though. I appreciate what it was doing even though I wasn't a fan of the aesthetics.
Prime Jetscream
And so, the 3DS has finally stomped out the good old DSi...
Ugh, I don't want to have to get a freaking 3DS to play all variations of the game.

Just get a 2DS; it's cheaper.

I still can't wait to see more of this. It'd be awesome to have a huge open world earth AND Cybertron.

I would, but I don't want an obsolete DS sitting around doing nothing, and I have an XL, so I'd have to get used to a smaller size, and I have a carrier thing for my DSi XL that probably wouldn't fit the 2DS.
Faceless
I'm guessing I'm the only one hyped about this. I surprisingly to many grew up on G1 and yet I still love the movies and really like the character designs. Yes they weren't even close to G1 but so what? This was an alternate verse with organic machines. To be honest a live action Transformer film was a childhood dream I never thought would happen.

The video game was also a favourite as it brought the G1 back to life in an interactive form. Yet this was also a verse in its own right.

I collect the Movie and the Cybertron games toy lines alongside MP and TFP.
I will be getting all the Generations AOE they look Awesome and now this game too.
So I'm really hyped for this especially now we know who's developing it.

Very glad to hear it's not done by High Moon. They nickle and dimed the shit out of us on FoC disc-locked content.

Does look like a lazy mish-mash, as others have said. You can't just take two opposite universes and make a game out of that. I'm seeing online play where all the douchebags troll as movie-verse characters.

Wayforward is not awesome. Their games are passable, good, but not great. I think they're more competent than inspired, so if your expectations are minimal, I suppose you will love this game.

See? This is the kind of insane optimism that is sure to be shot down. Wayforward is NOT Intelligent Systems. Fire Emblem is not happening.

I just sold my 3DS, too! Whatever happened to DS support??? Anyway, doesn't matter too much: it's WayForward. This game isn't going to blow your socks off, even if they give it a "tactical RPG" tag line. That might mean you can upgrade weapons and dialogue the characters like crazy. Woo.

It's kind of the new trend, so I wouldn't blame High Moon entirely for this. But yeah, this crap should stop. I just don't know why you think it would with a new developer... But when you really think about it, TF is a brand about spending power and income class: as soon as the new skins were out, a whole bunch of people had them right away, flaunting them as hardcore as they could; much the same with MPs nowadays. If any group of consumers can tolerate nickle and diming, it's the TF collector crowd.
grimmlock
Video games have had a good amount of success doing the wfc/foc games, why change it? "If it's not broken, don't try to fix it"! IMO
bumblebee22
I think we should give this new studio a chance, I personally like the idea of a crossover if you guys remember in WFC/FOC after going through space bridge the transformers don't go directly to earth instead they stumble upon other worlds so maybe the space bridge from FOC and the one from DOTM get merged or something and cause the two worlds to meet

I meant that if it was High Moon, I wouldn't have picked it up. If this new company does it (as blatantly), fine, I just wont get their next game either.

I was ok with the way WfC handled it. It was like half on-disc content, and half downloadable new content.
