TFW2005 War For Cybertron Game Play Thoughts and Interview!

TFW2005 staff Seth Buzzard had a chance to sit down with Activision and High Moon Studios rep Matt Tieger yesterday at GDC 2010. They were kind enough to show us some gameplay for the upcoming War For Cybertron video game, introduce some new characters, and answer some questions. Read on below to check it all out!

Tuesday night I headed down to San Francisco to meet with Matt Tieger of High Moon Studios. Matt is the Game Director of the upcoming Activision game Transformers: War for Cyberton. He walked me through a few sections of the game and answered a bunch of questions. Here is a rundown of what I learned.

Characters have two weapons; different weapons can be found and picked up during levels. Each character also has a special ability. The special abilities they showed off were as follows. Optimus (he isn’t a Prime yet) who had a war cry. This gives Optimus a temporary boost making his attacks more powerful, the cry also has an area of effect granting the boost to nearby allies. Next was Ratchet who has a repair beam that, as you might guess, heals friendly units. Finally we see Soundwave’s power which was to make walls of sound that could be used for cover.

Each level will have a squad of 3 characters, you will be able to choose which of these you want to play as at the start of each level with the computer controlling the other two. You will not be able to issue commands to the computer controlled characters. They will attack enemies and use their special abilities as they see fit. Matt Tieger assured us that they made sure the computer controlled characters are helpful and will not just spend the fight running into walls or putting themselves into unnecessary danger. More interesting than having computer controlled buddies is all the levels support 3 player co-op allowing your friends to hop into your game at any time and take control of one of those other characters.

Unlike the Revenge of the Fallen game transformation is not handled by holding down a button to stay in vehicle mode. This time transformation is toggled, press a button to transform, press it again to change back. This looks to allow much better control of the vehicles. The ground type vehicles are all hover cars not unlike how Wheeljack and Bumblebee where shown to be in the first episode of G1. As hover cars they can slide sidewise and are capable of movement a wheeled car isn’t. The drawback is they aren’t especially fast. When you want some speed the hover disks flip down to become wheels. In this mode you move much faster and control more as you would expect in a driving game.

Although they were nice guys and very friendly the PR folks in the room didn’t want Matt talking about multiplayer just yet and when I asked if he could tell me anything about the custom character feature they put the kibosh on that question.

At the beginning of the story Optimus does not have the title of Prime and is not the leader. A character I did not get to see named Zeta Prime leads the Autobots.

Characters I got to see as being playable were: Optimus (truck), Bumblebee (sport car), Ratchet (truck), Megatron (tank), Soundwave (truck class looked sort of like a van), Breakdown (muscle car) and Starscream (jet).

Characters I saw but were not playable (at least in the parts I saw, maybe they are in other parts of the game) were: Skywarp, Thundercracker, Jetfire (all jets) and Omega Supreme who’s alt-mode was not shown.

Omega Supreme was massive. To show just how big he was they had Soundwave stand next to him and poor Soundwave barely came up to Omega Supreme’s ankle.

Omega Supreme and Trypticon will be the only “cityformers” seen in the game.

There is a plan to have DLC for the game but it was too soon to give any hint what form it might take.

Matt Tieger wanted to update the look of the characters but wanted to make sure they were still recognizable. To test this he would show concept art to his kids and ask them “who’s this?” As long as the kids could still identify the character they knew they were ok.

The decision to make toys based on the game characters came several months into the game development and was seen as a huge vote of confidence to the game makers that they were on the right track from Hasbro.

I did not get to play the game myself as it was an early build and they haven’t settled on a final control scheme but what I saw of the game play, story, the Unreal Engine powered graphics and an attention to detail - like having the butt of Optimus’ gun the same shape as his gun in G1 - I walked away having a good feeling that this could be the best Transformers video game yet.

TFW2005 would like to thank Activision and High Moon Studios for their time and the chance to see the actual game mechanics in action. Transformers War for Cybertron is due out late spring/ early summer 2010. Pre-Order a copy at your favorite game store today!

Interesting stuff there. Interesting how he plugged 360 first, which doesn't bother, mind you. It just makes me believe this game was designed for the 360 first and ported to the PS3 rather than the other way around, which of course brings limitations, but I'm sure the game will still be good, but (sigh) the could have beens...

Did you see Nemesis flying in the background at 2:05? Awesome!

No new footage. Still not happy that Jets are only playable in separate levels. I guess we can only use Jets in Multi-player online jet modes. And still no word of offline co-op. Interesting he said the campaigns are long and there are unlockables.
Seth Buzzard:
I got to talk to Matt myself last night. Ask me anything, Ill do my best to answer.

I edited my post to point out I got to see the demo and talk to Matt myself. I don't know everything but i'll do my best to share what I do know.

No Dinobots, can't say on the others.
blackout501st:
if mr. seth buzzard himself says this could be the best TF game ever made, THEN IT WILL BE THE BEST TF GAME EVER MADE. huzzah!
blackout501st:
oh yes, and i have a question. did he mention at all how long each campaign will be? will they be short, medium, long?
Sideswipe80:
Do you know how many characters we're getting and the roster? Will the Jets be able to mingle with non jets in online modes? What are the unlockables? But isn't Grimlock in the game? A tank maybe?
The Madness:
I'm relieved to hear that Transformation is toggled.
Not only does it enable greater control of the alt-mode vehicle, it also avoids buggy context sensitive re-use of buttons.

I was forever randomly transforming in the PC ROTF game when trying to attack, I'm unsure whether pressing attack keys changed the pressure on the Transform/ accelerate button, or the inputs weren't mapped effectively.

Seth, did you see the 'flyer' levels first hand? Do you know how each flying map is limited?
Sideswipe80:
Did Jetfire and Breakdown look like their cartoon versions?
The Madness:
Greedy question number 2: Do you know if the Drones/ Clones Transform in battle?
(A wasted opportunity for updated reflector clones if not!)

He didn't get into how long the game will be but the 1st half is Decpticon and the 2nd Autobot. The Con story leads into the Bots

I don't know how many there will be. The demo only showed off limited parts of the game but I never saw cars and jets together. Whenasked he said no Dinobots.

They showed a short bit of a level flying around as Starscream. It looked like it was set inside a massive cavern of sorts.

I am concerned that every time there's an interview with these guys, they say the same things every time (two campaigns available, three TFs per level, drop in co-op, jets, etc...). With all of the coverage, you'd think they'd be revealing more but they keep dropping these few talking points every time.

Probably the fault of those damn PR people . What wet blankets they are
Sideswipe80:
I'm confused and disappointed. Kotaku said Grimlock was in the game and Matt says no Dinobots. I would have liked to have a least Grimlock. Something tells me this roster is going to be lacking for the Autobots. As it is Jazz and Prowl, 2 big players probably aren't even in the game. And Shockwave is only available in Multi-player. And the Jets more than likely won't be able to play online with the other vehicles and need their own online modes. I have no interest in Warpath. Grimlock could have been made into a tank like in IDW and DW.
xXThePrimesXx:
Were you told of any other characters that will be in the game, besides the ones mentioned above? Did you maybe even see some other characters in the game play you saw? Just curious because I haven't seen some of my favorite characters in the game yet.

No. You can see both in the gameplay trailer released a week or so ago. Jetfire’s the hologram figure many thought was Ultra Magnus (according to the story tformers.com reported on yesterday) and Breakdown can be clearly seen standing with Megatron and Brawl a few times throughout the trailer. The two, however, resemble their classic looks in style/color. I think Jetfire’s jet mode looks fantastic! Breakdown’s vehicle mode hasn’t been shown, if I’m not mistaken.

Tell me about it. Why do those conducting the interview ask the same questions? …or why do they allow the same answers? It’s like those interviewing are afraid of losing the opportunity to interview in the future or something

Wasn’t Kotaku.com talking about the DS version? I thought they had an exclusive on that version only.

Matt was talking about War for Cybertron soon to be released on the PC, PS3 and XBOX 360, which he plugged at the end of his interview.

Each interview feels as though he’s holding something back, keeping gamers and potential buyers interested, and why wouldn’t he? High Moon studios is getting free advertising by not divulging to much information, but a little at a time, as interviewers will run updates at every whim.

I think it’s doubtful the Autobot’s story will be limited to three single characters. As Matt said, Transformers is one of those rare lines in which there are too many fan favorites. Rather than cramming everyone into the story for the hell of it, they put only those that made sense to the story and environment—sounds fantastic to me

Here’s hoping to many surprises still left to be discovered come release day, though new information that doesn’t ruin the story is always welcome

I second that!

First of all: Dinobots were built after the Transformers came to earth (in the show).

Second: I think the Dinobots would limit the game play as far as their alternate modes (excluding Swoop, because he's pretty much a jet).

Last: I don't even really like the Dinobots.

Breakdown was the most unlike this G1 counterpart. His car mode looked more like Lockdown.

Jetfire is mostly white with red bits and his head and jet mode are diffrent then the cartoon but close enough I recognized who he was and can easily make the conection.

I could have sworn he said no Dinos. Maybe Grimlock is in it but just not a dino alt-mode. Things where happening fast and there was a bit of a time limit. All day things I wish I had asked have been popping in my head.

Who says they have to follow the show? Trypticon is in it. And he was created on Earth. I'm so tired of hearing that lame excuse. They were built after Earth, my gosh get over it. I hope none of your favorites make the cut now. And do you not read? The Dinos could be tanks like they were in the IDW and DW comics.

I think it's best to separate them, actually. Otherwise, you'll be left with characters fighting inside a sandbox, no place for a jet to be contained in. An open field would make jets unbeatable, as they'd be way out of blaster range and/or would be able to dodge income shots by a mile, literally.

...though, it would have been cool to have them playable against bosses like Omega Supreme and Trypticon, attacking these giants from up high and down low.

True but if they can't do it for single player then online is going to be bad cause you can't mingle the jets and land vehicles. And it still baffles me that Shockwave, who is a big player for the Cons isn't playable in the story mode.
Mobb One:
the dinobots would be cool but personally i hope they are not in it as they seem to be hoping that this game can produce subsequent sequels. If that's the case then with each new game they can insert various favorites (dinobots, galvatron, ultra magnus, sixshot, etc.). However if just grimlock himself were in it, then that would be cool. He'd absolutely need to be his War within incarnation or similar though. Looks unlikely as that dude from high moon specifically mentioned the need for an autobot tank and mentioned warpath.

I never said they had to, but the way it's been talked about it sounds as though the game comes before what happened in the G1 shows. Also, I'm just stating my opinion. Lastly, I could care less if my favorite characters aren't in there, I'm just curious (I've seen and heard about all but two of my favorites from G1 in the shots and videos).

Yeah that's what I wanted. At least Grimlock. Warpath is so boring. Grimlock would have been the perfect tank.

I wonder if any of the turrets will be surface to air heat seeking? That usually puts a dampener on air superiority.

Yeah...it's just when Transformers games are hit-or-miss, all the questions we WANT to know simply can't be answered.

Listening to a bunch of video game news, every studio unfortunately can't reveal the fun stuff T_T. So many hoops to jump through, so I can't blame them for not saying anything new because they need to keep us on the hook somehow.

As frustrating as it is, it IS a nice change from 90% of other games that tell you so much in advance. This at least keeps us in the dark (maybe more will come out closer to release).

But they're not following straight from the cartoon. The Alpha Centauri setting is from the comics. They are taking things from different media. Do some research. Ratchet's red helmet, comics, Autobot Wreckers symbol, comics. Zeta Prime, comics. If that was the case Trypticon wouldn't be in this game. He was built on Earth on the toon.

I think it's a smart move. And more than various PR maneuvering/development concerns, they're probably trying manage expectations. If you're looking to make a splash..under-promise and over-deliver.

It takes a long time to develop a toy and get it produced and out to stores. Hasbro didn't even decide to do the toys until the game was well into it's own development.

Yes they do, in one part as they where playing part of the Autobot story a squad of purple Con jets fly in, transform and attack.

They also seem to be a little more then just drones as they where shouting out out random dialog. Maybe more like each side just has a lot of guys that turn into the same thing and aren't cool enough to have there own colors.

I did ask about lookalike drones and that answer will be in an upcoming podcast. Yes I was able to record a short interview. Ooooh teaser.

Well, this looks like a belter of a game. The graphics and presentation are absolutely superb going by the videos.

For the person who saw it from TFW, did Jetfire look like his G1 or Classics version? Did he look good? What did Warpath look like? (pleased he's in the game BTW). Which character looked the best from what you saw? Also, how was the combat from what you could tell?

Not necessarily. I felt much of what was discussed was for story mode play only, thus jets be with jets and cars with cars and whatevers with whatevers, creating a balanced mix-up with a winnable outcome. There’s nothing like playing a game with an unbeatable boss/character.

Online mode could be the same as off, though with more characters available for it, there might be room for more varied play, but we won’t know for sure without studio confirmation or the actual game.

Why X is in/out of the game is explained by Matt when he said the game, story were created first and than the Transformers were placed within that world. If the character doesn’t make sense to the story/setting, don’t expect that character to be there. I’m sure when the game comes, we’ll bicker about how X could have fit here or there, but when you get down to it, it’s there story and they’ve designed the game the way they want us to see their story.

Sequels will have even more characters and fan favorites that missed an opportunity this time around.

True. We’ll have to wait and see. Also with Jets being able to hover, you’d think anything’s possible, but a Jet will always be faster than a car…
