Fall of Cybertron Metroplex Revealed, Escalation Returns

Ahead of E3, an early copy of the next edition of Gameinformer has stolen the thunder of High Moon Studios big E3 reveal for Fall of Cybertron, Metroplex. The big dude is shown in a screencap attached to the magazine's latest coverage of Fall of Cybertron and as you can see he is very much his original Generation 1 self, reimagined in the Cybertronian style of the War / Fall of Cybertron series. Metroplex is set to play a pivitol role in Transformers Fall of Cybertron, and while from what we have heard so far you may not get to control the titanic Autobot directly, when you play as Optimus Prime you will have the ability to mark targets for Metroplex to deal with. How Metroplex deals with them is half the fun - we have seen him eliminate targets using missile strikes or by closing in to smash them with his mighty fists, depending on the context.

But that is not the only news. The article around the image reveals that a fan-favorite element of Transformers War for Cybertron, the Escalation horde mode, is also set to return. Gameinformer reports that they have had a little hands-on time with the new mode, and will have some videos of it up in due course, so that is something to look forward to.

High Moon have been pretty much spot on with their character designs so far, but they really fumbled the ball with Metroplex; what in the name of Bonaparte's balls did they do to his head!?

It just seems totally bizarre when the rest of the design is so slavishly faithful to G1 Metroplex!

The original Metroplex was basically just a couple of humongous boxes stacked on top of one another. Like it or not, that boxiness is a fundamental part of his design. There's not really any way to rework it and have it still be recognizable as Metroplex.

This is a G1-inspired game, and G1 is the bastion of blockiness. For me, this is a welcome palette cleanser after five years of the LAM franchise, where everything was spindly, chicken-legged, over-complicated and completely devoid of character. It was an interesting novelty for a while, but I'm utterly, utterly tired of that aesthetic. I applaud High Moon for bringing back the chunk. Jolly good show!

I have a feeling that he isn't fully transformed. I somehow doubt that would be the final, in-game appearance for Metroplex.

I wanna say it's from the new one? But I'm not sure. I do feel kinda bad that High Moon's big E3 character reveal got sniped by a tiny image in a magazine, though.

That's how he looked in the footage I saw, IIRC. Not the best angle on him really - you need to see him in motion to get the real impression of the guy. Looks amazing.

The head is so tiny and it looks a little like he has one eye like Shockwave. It's hard to tell.

I absolutely love it though.

Re: the head size, makes sense to me.

One of the easy character design tricks to make giant characters feel giant is to shrink the head size relative to the rest of the body. Very commonly used.

Man that head is so pin sized. Smaller heads can help make the rest of the body look proportionally bigger, but that's just to the point where it looks silly. I'm really not liking most of the designs in this game.

That is a very tiny head. It looks like Shockwave took over his body because it looks like it is Shockwave's head on Metroplex's body.

Nice to see a pic finally.

I like how G1 he is.

The small head was almost certainly done to make him look more massive, but yeah they could stand to scale that back just a tad.

I ALSO want a Fortress Maximus skin for him.

-ZacWilliam, though I'd save Max as a character for game 3 and do a whole Headmasters arch with the Exiles' colonies and Nebulos.

Also, he doesn't really look city-sized. Like he looks like a regular sized dude just upscaled. He's got no extra detail or anything to make him look bigger than, say, Optimus.

Sarcasm aside, I think people dont appreciate your criticism of it because you're criticizing it for doing/being what its supposed to be.

Like if I bashed a car company because their vehicle STILL uses round tires, or because it was designed to to be driven, instead of flown.

Your critique of it essentially bashed it for looking like Metroplex. After 5 years of movie designs with little to no connection the characters theyre named for, lots of people appreciate HM for saying "screw huge updates. Lets make the characters look like who they are based on" & aside from they head looking tiny, this design is a dead ringer for Metroplex,boxy design and all.

Essentially, youre knocking their work, when what theyve done is bring a faithful update into their world.

Not mention, how would you suggest they update something that changes from a base to a robot? Really interested in how they could change the blocky aspect of him, keep him a base, and still have him be instantly recognized Metroplex.

but it HAS changed. It's not nearly as blocky as the G1 toy/character. I'm not loving everything HMS does, the new OP looks really bad in my opinion, but your criticism is like complaining that a seeker looks like a robot that transforms into a jet.
