Universe Ultra-Class Powerglide Review with Images 03
Draven of our 2005 Boards has hooked us up with another review and great photos. This time he has reviewed the upcoming Universe Ultra-class Powerglide. Draven's overview of the figure, as well as the images, can be seen by clicking on the Discuss button. Powerglide's tentative release date is the beginning of August, along with his previously reviewed enemy Onslaught!

I dunno he almost looks like they were going to make him a Movie toy and decided at the last minute to put him in with the universe line.

Cool, that's good to hear! Thanks! And seeing your follow-up pictures, I see what you mean, the grey looks pretty centralized.

Wow, he really dwarfs deluxes. Crazy. But it's good, I need some tall Autobots towering up in the back of my Classics shelves.

Noisemaze:
I have the henkei version pre-ordered at HLJ. Now after seeing this review, I want both versions. I can't get enough jet & spaceship Transformers, I'm sick & tired of all the damn car TF's they keep pumping out.

The deluxe seekers really suck next to this & Jetfire really should've been an ultra. I've been saying it all along, don't put jets in the deluxe class!!! I think your comparison pics pretty much prove my point. Thank God I have my MP seekers which are the correct size.
col:
Thanks for the review! He is kind of bland, but he'd be easy to paint!
a person:
Damn, that thing is huge! How big is he compared to Leader sized Transformers?

I always thought Jetfire's head looked way too small without his helmet. Partly it's because his chest sticks out so far, I think.

Now onslaughts head just makes me think of "So I Married an Axe Murderer."

"That's a huge noggin. It's a virtual planetoid. Has its own weather system! Head! Move!"

Three? Jetfire, Powerglide, and who? Did I miss something?

Red leader:
looks awesome, cheers for the review !!!
Trailbreaker77:
Draven do you have a G1 Powerglide I would like to see a size compairason?
Acteon:
Great review, but I think I'll pass on the figure. An irritating character in the cartoon and background fodder at best in the comic.

He does do an impressive job of making Jetfire look even more awesome though ^^
IhsantheCursed:
I think the following:

1.) He should NOT have been taller than Prime or Jetfire in robot mode.
2.) The Little heart under his chest armor is a great little homage to the G1 cartoon( nothing a little red/pink paint cant fix either ), and may be a solid reason to pick him up.
3.) He DOES look cool, but hopefully the Japanese versions' color scheme will be more g1 accurate.

All that said...yes , I will be getting him. He looks better than that Deluxe Galvatron anyway...

I always dug how Powerglide took on the coneheads and then Megatron pretty much solo in this episode, for freedom and a chick. He's like a Transformer James Bond.
saberconvoy:
I might get him. I have to say he sure has changed since G1.
Johnator:
Definitely getting this figure. Very nice pictures Draven!

That's the first Transformer episode I watched when I was a kid.
Basketball Jones:
The comparison photo with Jetfire was rather shocking. I had no idea he looked so different.

Does anyone else think the head looks like a Protoss from Starcraft?
GavynN.X.:
He has breasts - what in the blue hell!
Valkysas:
I'll need to find a suitable figure to represent Astoria for him to beat.
Draven:
Someone over at the Allspark asked for a pic of the modification for Powerglide's hip, so here it is:

The hip is held together with 2 screws, one small & one large. As you can see, I opened the hip up and simply cut away the first "tooth" on the bottom of the ratchet.
The Asp:
Does he have any minicon pegs at all?

I want to pair him with Steelwind or whichever one from the Clear Skies Team was the A-10.

soundwaveCA:
Awesome review dude!

Though I think I will heed your warning about this toy not being for everyone as even seeing him at Botcon I was pretty wary of him so I will probably be giving this toy a miss.
Trailbreaker77:
Why did you modify his leg joint what was it doing?
Draven:
The position of the ratchet meant he could only stand with his legs either RIGHT together, or WIDE apart.
Hound & Mirage:
butz:
I've pretty much lost any interest in this figure (including the repaints of it). I was interested when I first saw pics of it, but there's several things about his design (as in sculpt, not paint) that just rub me in the wrong direction.
Shin Densetsu:
Draven, in jet mode, is it possible to slide his knee caps back to cover up the gap seen from above?
Draven:
Nope; they only rotate.

GREAT idea, I'm going to do that with Marvel Crossovers Iron Man.
Cujo:
i like mine but he is a little too top heavy
Kingplay:
imma wash it with black, bet it will look much better

I really wanted to wait for the Henkei version since its the only one I haven;t been able to get my inner Geewunner to shut the hell up about, but I saw it on the shelf and couldn't help myself.

Powerglide isn't all that bad, if a little wonky. It really is pretty topheavy and the hip ratchet joints don't have small enough teeth to give it enough posability options to counter the upper torse without looking super akward. That's my major beef. The arms do seem a little small as well.

Other than that it's a cool toy. the colors aside it's a great update to the G1 character. The alt mode IS powerglide and in robot mode the head is spot-on, and the wings jutting upward are great throwbacks to the original toy. The heart molded under the chest covering is funny little 'easter egg' for those who know what its supposed to be...for some reason I was under the impression it was supposed to be a light up heart but I have no idea where I read or heard about that though.

I may still get the Henkei version when it's released to get the kid in the back of my brain to stop shouting but we'll see how much god awful Chrome Tomy slaps all over it. I'll be happy with this version if I decide to skip it

yovnocrats:
what would you guys recommend i use to cut away teeth on the ratchet joints? i tried doing iron man with an exacto knife, but it didn't work so well.

I did Iron Man's with a pocket knife. I don't really understand why an exacto wouldn't work though. You can just chop right through it, you have to slowly whittle it down by taking thin strips off.

Go on, get the Henkei, then mix and match pieces from both to create a 100% accurate one.
feral prime:
hey guys..i was hoping someone could help me on my powerglide. i just opened mine and going by the instructions, i think i made a booboo. when you take the wings and arms and swing them up..how are you suppose to do that? i swung the hip/wings panels up so the arms can attach to the side and now i have stress marks/ wear where the screws are...did i do this wrong or do i have a shoty powerglide???

That happened to mine as well.

I think the problem was that the plastic used on the swivel joint was rather soft. Compound that with the screws being too tight resulted in the stressed plastic.

So yeah.

But likes:

-AWESOME plane mode.
-Kick ass bot mode.
-Fun tranformation.
-AWESOME two way transformation sound.

Dislikes:

-Gun attached in plane mode prevents front landing gear from touching the ground.
-Missile pretty much can't be attached to the gun and attached to the plane unless you want the gun crooked.
-Missiles goes on the back end of the gun? WTF?
-Damned stress marks on the main wing swivels.
-Can't really stand that well by himself.

So yeah.
Note to self: loosen screws before transformation.

Edit for clarification: loosen screws on Powerglide. A few of mine are loose enough.
dmc2008:
Ahh.. Powerglide. All, this talk, I had to go get him.
His bot mode looks very kick ass. His plane mode... not so bad, but that gun is ridiculous. I think I'm gonna leave it off for the most part.
It is one of the loosest alt modes I've seen in quite some time, actually. Nothing seems to "lock in place".
The same can be said for the bot mode, where my chest and stomach pieces do not seem to snap into their designed holes. The shoulder tabs are not as bad as Deluxe Brawl, but they suck IMO. Hasbro can fix these dumb problems, they shouldn't happen.
And yes, he's top heavy. I don't really mind the legs, though. Like Classics Jetfire, I can still get some sweet poses going.
Did I mention he looks like a complete bad ass in bot mode?
I recommend this guy even with all of his faults. I know he's far from perfect and a bit pricier than most toys, but you'll kick yourself in the end for not getting one of these molds..

EDIT: This was a very ambitious mold to design. If anything, that's why I like it.

Thanks for the pic, man. I will have to untighten the screw when I get mine!
AutobotMarine:
I like this toy quite a lot. I'll pick him up as soon as I get more cash.
Shin Densetsu:
Loosen those screws that Razerwire highlighted immediately after removing the toy from package. Mine developed stress marks soon after transformation, and soon after I loosened the screws, which helped a lot, but if I had done that before transformation, I would have gotten no stress marks whatsoever.

Decent Transformer, worst jet mode of the Classics, but most articulation of all the jet transformers in classics so far. The jet mode is okay, just not executed as well as the other classic jets, it does not look balanced from the top(looks nose heavy). By all means its not bad.

I like the size, sure its Powerglide but this is a great size for an A-10 based Transformers.

The most dissapointing thing is the front landing gear. When on its gear, the plane looks nothing but awkward, the nose gear is too short, had it been as long as its shown in the instructions, the plane would be able to sit upright on its gear, instead of having its rear end stick up.
Rodr-Evil:
That red button... I can't apart my eyes from it.
This figure is a MUST for me!!! The hell, Powerglide have a heart???!!!!
Astrotrain52:
Too lazy to check furthur back, but does anyone have a comparison pic with Classics Jetfire since people say he's bigger than him?
Draven:
http://www.tfw2005.com/boards/2178739-post19.html
I posted that right back near the beginning of the thread. Next time, be less lazy.
G1Wheeljack:
There are also some comparison pics of him with Henkei Skyfire here:

Astrotrain52:
Thanks for the pics. Hehehe...yeah he's big. Still getting, might add a few hints of red testors paint here and there.

My Powerglide has that problem as well.
