Universe Ultra-Class Onslaught Review with Images 05
Draven of our 2005 Boards has reviewed the upcoming Ultra-class Onslaught figure from the Universe (Classics 2.0) line. Draven's overview of the figure, as well as the images, can be seen by clicking on the Discuss button. Universe Onslaught's tentative release date is the beginning of August, so expect to see this figure start trickling out to stores soon!

This is the best classic yet...It should be a combiner!
Nerroth:
That said, he's pretty badass by himself!

Mine seems to fit together reasonably well - for now.
REDLINE:
I have for all but the two leg bots, but those are narrowed down at least.
SPLIT LIP:
Onslaught rocks. I got mine for $34, good enough considering some places still have ultras for $40. The only problem is that the left grey leg panel doesn't close. I wish he had a rifle, though. I'll just have to paint Mega Octane's rifle black. Still feels like a Voyager. I don't know why, he is bigger, but he does feel... lighter. (for lack of a better term)

Oh right, the vehicle mode is lame, but it rolls and has guns. It will do.
Philister:
My take on Onslaught

UNIVERSE ONSLAUGHT

For more pics, click on the link above

Robot Mode: Let's get the homage stuff out of the way first. Universe Onslaught is, of course, a homage to the original G1 Onslaught (who was later recoloured into RID Mega Octane). Look-wise, though, the two aren't all that similar. The head is the same and both have twin cannon barrels sticking out from their back, but that's pretty much where the similarities end. Still, Onslaught is more or less recognisable as the classic character, so no points deduction for that.

Leaving the G1 comparisons aside, Onslaught is a very posable and highly detailed robot. Just about the only thing that bugs me about him is that some of his parts are a little loose. The gun flipping out from his right forearm and the construction of the legs could be a bit sturdier, the joints tighter. Apart from that, though, I can't find much of a fault with Onslaught. He looks good and grim, clearly a Decepticon.

Sadly his armaments here are limited to his arm gun, as he can't flip those back cannons of his forward, but with a little improvisation he can deliver one hell of a shoulder tackle thanks to those mine sweeper spikes he sports there. And of course he carries a S.W.A.T. type shield on his left arm, which looks very good on him.

So overall, a pretty nice robot. He's big, he's posable, he's detailed. And while he's missing that little something extra that would make me call him very good, he's a damn fine robot when it comes down to it.

Alternate Mode: Where the original Onslaught transformed into a kind of artillery truck, Universe Onslaught becomes a S.W.A.T. tank. Built less for all-out warfare but rather urban combat, the tank has wheels instead of threads and looks faster and more lightly armoured than his bigger battlefield cousins. He does have a big double-barelled turret, though, which can be enhanced by putting his shield on top.

The front of the tank features a kind of mine sweeper add-on, spiked shovels which can flip down to remove any dangerous objects from his path. Apart from that there are numerous sculpted details all over the tank, even including individual rivets in the armour plates. If there's any significance to the words and numbers on Onslaught's side it has escaped me so far. Monzo was, of course, Weirdwolf's Headmaster partner, but what that has to do with Onslaught, your guess is as good as mine.

So to sum it up, a very solid, highly detailed, and pretty much flawless vehicle mode. While I don't know the reasoning behind giving Onslaught a very different alt mode compared to his G1 days, it does perform quite well, so no complaints.

Remarks: From his profile you could say that Onslaught is the Decepticon version of Colonel John "Hannibal" Smith of the A-Team. He loves it when a plan comes together. Anyway, the original G1 Onslaught was the leader of the Combaticons, a combiner group, and known for being a military genius. He appeared in quite a few episodes in late Season 2 and in Season 3 of the G1 cartoon as well.

For his Universe reincarnation Onslaught received a significant boost in size, becoming an Ultra-class toy whereas he was just about Deluxe-sized before. He also got a different vehicle mode and the combiner gimmick was dropped. So no Universe Bruticus in the foreseeable future (at least not as a G1 homage). Still, that leaves us with a big, posable, and highly detailed toy that offers quite a bit of play value and has no obvious flaws. At the end of the day Onslaught is a good figure, but missing that little something extra that would make me give him an A. So the final verdict: Good, solid, but not outstanding.

Re: the leg cage thing popping off all the time... May have been mmentioned a million time already but, the reason it does that is cuz the gimmck built in on the leg that allows for the engine/rev sound in alt mode... so the legs have slightly different molding...

Anyway, mine doesnt have that pop off problem. Just make sure that the tabs that connect the shin plate to the side of the leg and the cage/wheel popping off shouldnt be a prob.

Oh, yea... Its an awesome toy BTW!
Xhairs:
i still havent found this guy yet. but ill get him for sure.
Drake:
Still haven't seen him yet either.
MushroomPrime:
There's only been one I've seen in my area EVER! Thank God I bought it, that was two months ago btw
simplygriff:
Wow. I remember seeing him a lot when he was first released and i wasn't looking for him. Saw him just yesterday at TRU. Woulda picked him up but I had just bought him from a member Saturday.

kylash327:
just openned mine up last night, LOVE this guy, rock solid, great posability, awesome sculpt, and light up visor, cant get any better.

SPLIT LIP:
Is there anyway to get those grey panels inside his legs to tab down?

I actually really like this guy. He's grown on me quite a bit.
REDLINE:
yep they tab down.

Never had any trouble tabbing them in on mine, but if you read back in the thread a bunch of people had some sort of problem with theirs.

Word has it a running change has fixed the siren sound to repeat like it's supposed to.
Skylock:
I had the tab down problem along with many others. The figure is great but with all the problems I went ahead and got rid of it for the Henkei version. This one is flawless.
Shark Jumper:
Mine has comic relief response siren, I haven't found the fixed version yet.
ShadowStitch:
I just couldn't leave well enough alone... those tiny tiny gunbarrels just didn't cut it for me! I added chunky new gunbarrels in addition to all of the other mods I've done -- orange eye light, light up spotlight, red klaxons, dyed black hands and so forth....

The new guns are removable and the mod is reversible in case I ever want to switch back to the original ones... but I don't see that happening. And if you can guess where I cannibalized the gunbarrels from, you're a bigger toy dork than I ever imagined.

I wanna say the new 25th anniversary Cobra Rattler x2

Am I getting warm?

CLOSE.
They're from the front end of a long-since deceased G.I. Joe "Thunder Machine."
In fact, I'm reasonably sure they are ALL that's left of said Thunder Machine... now gracefully repurposed.

Let's see him in Robot mode. I wanna see the hands.

redline, so your henkei version has no problems with the legs clicking parts staying together.
I wonder if thats a fix or simple variation?
MetaRidleyX:
Hello all, I just got Onslaught yesterday (90% awesome toy), my one big gripe with the toy at the moment is that when I put him back into vehicle mode, the two parts that become his legs don't want to stay on the hinge/tab whatever its' called when I put them back into vehicle mode, they keep coming out and I've only got it perfectly together once so far...does anyone have any ideas on what the "trick" is to get those two parts to stay in is?

I hope what I said made sense....and I'm sorry if this has already been asked and answered....I just really don't feel like searching through 20 pages to find the answer.
Faxon:
Are the cages still peged into the legs properly once you have connected them to the clip on the battery lid?
MetaRidleyX:
....I never knew there was a clip there for it...thanks...now I just feel really dumb.
Razerwire:
Just a heads up.

I bought an Onslaught with a good siren and noticed that they've fixed the leg panel problem by making the pegs longer.

Yay!
Viper08:
same here, i saw a couple with the bad siren, but got lucky and found one with the good one, his legs are prefect now, no problem whatsoever.
AniProwl:
Got this guy without any problems. He is close to perfect. For that, I give him a solid A.
Optimus747:
How widespread is this "fixed" version?
I've seen a whole bunch of newly-stocked Onslaughts in a Target and two different Wal-Marts, but none of them have the fixed siren.
Not that it's a big deal, because my Onslaught doesn't have any problems other than the short siren noise, but I was wondering about the distribution of the changed ones.

The fixed one has been shipping in cases with Stormcloud. Not very widespread at all though. The only fixed one I've ever seen was the one I bought.
wipedout:
I picked up one of the "Fixed" versions and it is so much better than the first release. His legs are perfect in Robot mode and his sides no longer come apart when in Alt mode. He has become one of my favs in this line now.

Now only if they could fix that wretched Power Glide Mold. Damn top heavy bitch.
Ezilla82:
A couple weeks ago before Target raised their prices I finally brought a working siren version of Onslaught and I haven't even got him out of the package yet. So hopefully to enjoy this figure.

Take it out now and enjoy it.

I noticed that his sheild can be used as a close combat weapon like Captain America's shield.
Ray Kremer:
I ran across a running change Onslaught at the store the other day. In fact it was sharing the shelf with an older one that had the nonrepeating siren.

If I had known the fix was coming I would have held off on buying, or at the very least opening one of the original ones. But since I did open it, and the leg thing is okay on mine, I'll stay with what I have.

I will, eventually. Man, he needs a hand held weapon, the gun he has is okay, but I needs some more firepower. Hopefully to find a decent gun that suits him very soon.

I htink the designers could've incorporated a flip sword that would attach to the shield. So when the sheild is on Slaughty's arm, pop comes the sword.

Something like Movie's Wreckage, right. That could be cool to see that.

I finally managed to take time to upload these pictures. About a week after I bought Universe Onslaught, I decided to give him a gun. Plenty of other toys' guns fit Onslaught's hands, but I wanted a gun that integrated into his truck mode, too. This was quite a challenge, and I think I have solved it. All you need is to take a G1 Powermaster Prime rifle, and you get a link so good, it even stays snugly in place when you lift up the toy:

Step 1: Take Powermaster Prime's rifle, and fit it rightside up, snugly between Onslaught's arms, like this. I circled the area in green where the parts must match up:

Step 2: See his leg cages? There's actually a cross shape groove, which I highlighted in green:

Step 3:...and luckily for us, the rear part of Powermaster Prime's rifle has the exact same cross shape:

Voila! The fit is so good in truck mode that the gun points straight. There's enough clearance so that the gun never rubs against the ground, the truck rolls freely.

The "teeth" still deploy, although you have to get over the fact that you have a gun sticking out between the teeth:

In my opinion, PM Prime's gun looks so good with Onslaught, you'd think they were made for each other. The only mod I had to do was to shave the gun's hand-peg so that it fits Onslaught. As is, the peg is a bit too big for his hands.

Enjoy.

If you didn't know any better, you'd swear that PM Prime's gun was made for Onslaught. The only mod I had to do was to shave PM Prime's hand-peg so that it fits Onslaught. As is, the peg is a bit too big for his hands.

Dude, that's genius. But I think I'll find something more BFG style, but not going autobotx23 style. Thanks for the pointer, though. I bet someone is doing that too somewhere.
Lord Of Tetris:
I updated my post with pictures of teeth-deployed, ground clearance, and robot mode.

In my opinion, Onslaught looks just right with the PM Prime rifle. The cross-shape fit is one-in-a-million, and the proportions are just right. He looks kind of like a SWAT member with an M-16.

Heh. Now that Ezilla mentioned a BFG-type gun for Onslaught, I think I'm going to try to make that happen (with minimal modification). Who knows, maybe I'll find a weapon that's just right and can integrate into his truck mode somehow.

Awesome pics of how you use Powermaster Prime's rifle in vehicle mode while those teeth deployed, the ground clearance, and robot mode. Thanks I do like to put this BFG on top of those cannons and/or on the back like being held like some gun rack or something like that.

Ezilla82:
Yesterday I finally got to transform him and OMG he's awesome as hell. Like Draven said the legs were a problem, but minor it was his shoulders that took me longer to work without breaking him all and all he's great. All he needs is what I said earlier a BFG that suits him. Oh Hell Yeah!!!
BustaJesse:
Has anyone found a corrected Onslaught in Canada yet? I really want one.
