Universe Ultra-Class Onslaught Review with Images 05
Draven of our 2005 Boards has reviewed the upcoming Ultra-class Onslaught figure from the Universe (Classics 2.0) line. Draven's overview of the figure, as well as the images, can be seen by clicking on the Discuss button. Universe Onslaught's tentative release date is the beginning of August, so expect to see this figure start trickling out to stores soon!

Velcrohead:
No leg cage problems, except that one of the wheels that folds up into his leg continues to fall off. Other than that, spectacular toy.

The fact that the more recent posters to this thread seem to be having fewer issues with the leg cage would support Hasbro doing some kind of rolling fix. I just picked him up today. No leg cage problem on mine and the shield stays in fine too.

Yes, but there's luckily a cure. Rotate the wrist so that the thumb faces the hole, then rotate it in. If you do that, you shouldn't have a problem.

I guess I might as well add this here...

Preface: I have been working on some dyeing projects lately, following Redline's tutorial over in Radicons, and my successes have led me to start wantonly changing the color of random things with reckless glee.

Something I noticed on the packaging for Onslaught: his hands and turrets are black in the photos, but on the toy they're grey. This doesn't do a whole lot to help them stand out; especially the fists, which look like stumpy cartoon gloves.

I liked the look of it so much I decided to give em a run through my dye bath -- it's amazing how quickly and easily this softer PVC plastic just sucks up the dye! And it's way better than paint, since it's impossible to remove, and the dye penetrated deep enough that it might as well have been molded in black.

So here's a few more snaps of my already heavily modded Onslaught...now with package-authentic deco!

Acteon:
I really love the design of this figure, but I just can't think where the hell I'd put it! Have to stick to the Deluxe's for the most part I think. Still, lovely update...

Am now very interested in dying a few TF's myself after seeing shadowStich's fine work...

Hubba hubba!!
Powersa:
No leg problems on mine.
Lord Of Tetris:
Should I be worried about stress marks appearing on the holes that take the "leg cage" pegs?

I simply CANNOT get it to work... any time I try to use nailpolish on anything, it all rubs off very quickly. Balljoints every time, but tabs are sometimes problematic. Er. I guess PM me if you feel like it's offtopic?
I'm having the same problem with my Onslaught (the chest not locking in), and I've never had to apply nail polish to any of my figures. Can anyone post the correct way to do this please?
Synthetic Breed:
That looks stellar! You should dye the claw tings in the front of the car too. That'd be dope.

Switchblade:
Picked this guy up at Target today. I wasn't sure I would, as I'm not a big fan of the Ultra size class or the annoying sound chips that they tend to be equipped with. But he looked so good (and I can't find Blitzwing or Galvatron yet), so I decided to go ahead and grab him. Definitely can't say that I regret it, as Onslaught is one damn fine Transformer.

Onslaught's vehicle mode is a six-wheeled SWAT armored car - in many ways he looks like Bulkhead's really mean brother. A lot of the attitude comes from the wicked looking mine sweeper teeth at his front, which look ready to tear through Autobots. He's done mostly in a sort of dark metallic turquoise with some greenish gold accents. There's a turret on top which contain most of his annoying sounds - a fairly pathetic siren and a repeating machine gun sound. His shield can be attached to the top of this turret, and the result not only blocks some nice sculpted details, but also looks absolutely ridiculous. One of my favorite details is the opening hatch on top of the vehicle mode. Great touch. The vehicle mode's only downside (unless you have the shield on top) is that his third sound effect is activated by one of the wheels hitting a hidden trigger. The resulting sound is not only vague and annoying, but the trigger keeps the tire from rolling as freely as the other five.

Onslaught's transformation is pretty simple, but I'd recommend not doing it around someone who's easily irritated, as his legs have some of the loudest ratchet joints I've heard in awhile. Robot mode is nice and imposing. He has good proportions, excellent articulation, and a fantastic head sculpt. The twin cannons on his back hearken back to his G1 incarnation nicely, while the teeth from his vehicle mode make for some very cool shoulder pads. His shield clips onto his left arm, and it looks immeasurably better than it does on top of his vehicle mode. He has a small cannon on his right forearm that pops out at the press of a button. It works, but it looks ridiculously small in comparison to the rest of him. I wish they could have found a way to include a more impressive rifle, as this dinky thing he has on his arm is pathetic.

In all, he's a great figure and a more than worthy addition to your Classics connection.
eriku:
Yeah, he should have come with a massive gun (like G1 Blaster size) to stick in his hand instead of the flip-out lazer. One of the things I like about Silverbolt is that he comes with a big gun to hold.
soundwaveCA:
Another one for he needs a gun, love the toy but he just seems so naked without some badass firepower to go along with.
Draven:
Get a G1 Onslaught gun. It fits his hand perfectly on mine. And looks SO badass.

I'd do that, but that'd be tiny for his gestalt mode

It fits? AWESOME. Maybe I'll use the Ruination version with all the smaller guns attached. Bwahaha. ha.

Yeah, I tried this with the gun from my RiD Mega Octane. Looks perfect... except for the color being horribly wrong. An orange gun just doesn't look right in this guy's hand.
flamingunicron:
I gave him Henkei Astrotrain's gun and looks really nice. The colors dont match perfectly but its pretty close that its only a minor difference
shogun221:
He does need a handheld weapon...

remind me to give the universal fist a raise....
darkmgmstr:
My solution to a weaponless Onslaught:

I took the Binaltech Upgrade sword and it looks perfect with his S.W.A.T. shield.

Just out of curiosity, is anyone having problems keeping his chest pined with the rest of his body? It seems that mine is not clicking to keep the chest from moving. Any recommendations?

Overall as a figure, I am sooo loving it. I am actually thinking about forming a Bruticus from Onslaught and several others.
SPLIT LIP:
Doesn't Onslaught have a gun on his arm, and two on his back? How does that constitute weaponlessness? (or weapon-less-ne... fuck it)

I saw this guy and passed.

It costs $40 for an Ultra, but when I saw Onslaught I saw no Ultra, just a slightly bigger Voyager with lights and crappy sounds. Not paying $40 for a fat Voyager with electronics.

I wish he was just a Voyager, no sounds or dumb shit. Just a regular sized, regular priced Voyager Onslaught.
REDLINE:
he's WAY too big to be a voyager man.

Waaaaait... 40$?? Where are you buying your toys? He's 24.99 at all the stores here, and 24.99 on HTS as well....
Omegus Prime:
Canadian retail is $40 for an Ultra. That said, he's bigger than most voyagers I've gotten lately, the big ones I have like Vector Prime and Leobreaker are small to him.
TCracker:
Vs Powerglide

Here's looking at you!

I'm aware of the price disparity between the US and Canada, but I have to imagine you could nab him for less than $40 via the interwebs, especially now that the exchange rate is near parity. It's true that he's essentially a bulked-up voyager with lights and sounds, but he's only supposed to be $5 more, not twice as much. He's a good figure, I probably wouldn't spend $40 on him either, but he's worth picking him up for a more reasonable price.

Oh I didn't know that. That's pretty terrible... You could almost buy one in the USA and have someone mail it to Canada for less than that!
Vangelus:
I went cruising online and shipping costs to kick it back over our retail. Damn!

BBTS' two-Ultra deals (like $57 for Onslaught and Powerglide) are nice price-wise for Canadians, but if the nightmare random doom machine that is Canada Customs decides to look at the package, there'll be a massive surcharge that the recipient gets to find out about -and- pay at the door.
Gears:
Just opened mine. Stupid legs keep opening. Chest wont clip together at all. Color me disappointed.

Edit: OK I got the chest to click together. Had to move it slightly sideways at the same time as pushing it in. But the left leg still keeps opening.
SPLIT LIP:
I'm in this polace called Canada. Here, Deluxes are $15, Voyagers $30, Ultra's are $40, and Leaders can go for $50-$60. (depending)

Yeah, fuckin' right. Still, it could be worse.

Add shipping, customs and taxes, it wouldn't be worth it.

I was only going to pick him up if I saw him and thought he looked decent, but seeing him in stores he's easily passable. I only buy stuff off the internet if I'm really into it. I'm into Onslaught, but not REALLY into him.

Besides, I can save my money for Grimlock and Blitzwing. Onslaught won't be hightailing it anywhere anytime soon, so I can wait till I get a better opportunity.
Incepticon:
Shit damn. Overall this is an AMAZING figure, but I got one with the f'd up left leg cage issue.
Bumble Prime:
my leg cages are fine but it looks like a homemade fix......... like someone got a punch and just widened the peg holes. Stress marks an all....... weird
REDLINE:
I finally got this bastard. Its even a wave 1 release, yet he's flawless! To top it off he is going to work soooooo perfectly for my Gestalt project.
AutobotMarine:
I bought Powerglide, though honestly.... which one's better? Onslaught or Powerglide?
heshanj:
a friend of mine got me this figure from the US..and i think he's misplaced a tank turret..now im trying to sell this for like half the price of it in singapore, or to find a spare turret..does anyone know if i can do either of these? lol

Honestly, the turret barrels aren't that great...he actually might like Onslaught better if he just located some guns, like from a cheap military toy, and replaced them both with some sturdier-looking machine gun barrels. I know that some new barrels are definitely on my "keep-an-eye-out" list. Though for some time I had him without the barrels entirely because it doesn't look too bad that way either...

I picked up Onslaught, because I needed more Decepticons. I like how he is big and huge and can run the Autobots off the road.

My brother bought Powerglide, and he is alright. I am holding out for Stormcloud though, I like the color scheme better.
Shane Anderson:
Great update of the original Onslaught. This is my second Ultra in as many weeks, and I almost never buy anything but deluxe figures. But G1 nostalgia kicked in, so I couldn't resist. About my only complaint is that I wish the blue was as dark as the original figure. Other than that, there's nothing to dislike.

- with or without the G1 homage, this would be a good Transformer. Both modes are excellent, and the transformation is both simple and creative, with a few steps I hadn't seen before. I'm thinking of the way the legs are formed here.
- the head is a nice update of the original. The wide visor and very narrow mouthplate are the distinctive features, along with the dot on the forehead which is present on the original toy as well, though unpainted.
- the twin guns sticking up over the shoulders are a distinctive part of Onslaught's silhoutte, and the figure wouldn't look right without them.
- I love the green, rivetted panels that end up as TFU Onslaught's feet. They clearly evoke the similar panels on the original figure that are made up of stickers on his shoulders. And of course, the Decepticon insignia is on the right shoulder, just as it is on my original.
- wheels on the legs end up on the back, just as on the original.

As for Onslaught, he's imposingly large and well articulated. The shield is a nice accessory, as is the flip-out wrist gun. The shoulder spikes don't seem particularly useful in this mode, but they do make him look more dangerous.

In short, this is an excellent Transformer, probably better than Powerglide in a number of ways. And like several of the other Universe figures, a character who hasn't been redone a dozen times now, making the character an even more welcome choice.
paramedicprime:
yeah i think onslaught is a great figure.Done very well.I like all the ultra class universe guys so far more so than the deluxe wave 1

thanks maybe i'll get him to do that
avmercenary:
Onslaughts cannons are pretty cool, I just wished they went over his shoulder. Every now and then I pull one of them out and place it in his hand as a nightstick. Looks kinda cool with his shield and Nightstick combo.

Pure SWAT attack coming at'cha!

The two biggest differences are the main color ( dark green verses grayish blue ) and the paint aps on the face. The Henkei face looks better, but the Hasbro colors are better. Or they would be if he was the same shade of blue as the one pictured on the box.

Anybody know why he's the wrong shade of blue?
Chaos Muffin:
This guy is SO awesome, now to go find a huge rifle for him. Needs more firepower for robot mode. A few missle racks in vehicle mode would be dandy as well

Soundblaster1:
CM- Last I checked, BBTS had some weapon packs and such on clearance. I think they're around Alt-scaled, so they'd probably fit fine with Onslaught. You might want to look into those.
Chaos Muffin:
Thanks, will check it out

Been using a knock off G1 Bruticus gun, but it's a little small for him.

Thinking of modding a big GI Joe Sigma 6 gun, to hold and mount on his back to swing over his shoulder
Soundblaster1:
I'm actually gonna see about finding a G1 Powermaster Prime gun for him. (can't use this one because I'm selling the figure)

http://img185.imageshack.us/my.php?i...ught001gu7.jpg

Works really well. Almost too well, actually. Too bad it doesn't really go with the alt mode.
Renidragon:
Nabbed him today. Pure badass. It's kinda too bad he has big holes in his wrists if you want a "normal" elbow joint, rather than joints that turn inward... but at least they gave us rotating wrists to compensate. And he's MUCH bigger than in-box pictures might lead you to believe, which I'm happy about. Pics kinda make him look a little squat in alt mode... this is not the case. I DO agree with Soundblaster1 - he does need a huge rifle.
Lord Of Tetris:
I took a Powermaster Prime rifle, shaved down the handle-peg a bit, and now it fits perfectly into Onslaught's hand. The aesthetic really makes it look like this rifle belongs to Onslaught.

Even better, I found a way to integrate the rifle into truck mode. See the space between his arms, on the underside of the truck? Just stick the rifle, rightside-up between his arms. No modification needed. It should provide just enough squeeze in order to comfortably stay there. You can even deploy his truck mode "teeth" and the rifle still stays between the gap.

I'll take pictures when I'm able.

Have you worked out who you'll use for the other Combaticons?

(I was thinking that if you have both Classics and Henkei Astrotrains, you could keep one as himself, and use the other to rep Blast Off - in fact, didn't Movor have a similar white colour scheme to Classics Astrotrain?)

Maybe then, Blast Off would want to be seen by anyone he knows in that getup.

(Yeah, right - we all know Blast Off doesnt know anybody.)
