2005 Board member pingth has got his hands on the upcoming Wave 4 deluxe from the Transformers Prime Robots In Disguise line: Airachnid. He's been nice enough to post in our feedback forum a pictorial review of the figure including looks at vehicle mode, robot mode and some comparison photos with Deluxe Arcee and Deluxe Soundwave.

Click on the title bar to check out the pics and get his thoughts on the figure.

STAFF UPDATE: pingth has also provided pictorial revies for the other two deluxes in this wave: Shadow Bumblebee and Dead End

That thing is a piece of poop. But I like how she looks with Arcee. That's why I'll buy her.

The bad articulation is SUCH a shame. I was hoping for Arcee levels of articulation so I could pose them epicly brawling. Now I'll only be able to do basic stuff.
Bountyan
Third party rotors/spider legs and some paint will do this figure major justice.
Noideaforaname
That's a very boring helicopter.

Since the cockpit opens and has a little seat I really wish there was some figure to ride in it, whether it be one of the humans or a toy-only Targetmaster-esque minion. A tiny Igor-spider bastard that turns into some medieval handheld torture device would be perfect. As it is it has no practical use and hinders the design.
Maverick Hunter Christian
This toy. Such a goddamn shame.
MisterFanwank
Ugh. Hasbro's photoshopped pictures gave me some hope, but I kind of knew she would turn out like this. I'll still get her for the off chance she'll surprise me, though.
kaijuguy19
Still going to get her despite the flaws because aside from the Commander Class figure coming out Airachnid's figure right now may be the only one of her. Hopefully their would be a better one coming in the future.
Vector Squidma
I've been pretty lenient on the PRID figures so far (SO excited to get my mitts on PRID Bulkhead), but this is just...urgh. The thing that kills her for me is those horrible blocky panels on her arms and legs. They took a sleek, sexy character model and turned it into something that looks like it came from a playstation 1 game. I'll probably still end up getting it for the sake of completion, but this is by far the worst looking figure in the line so far IMO.
Robogeek28
I'll be passing on this unless I happen to find her during a big sale. I just can't believe how badly Hasbro screwed her up, it's like they weren't even trying with this one.
Shadowbreaker
She doesn't look horrible, but could've been better.

But man, this thing has an insignia, and a molded one at that. Have we seen any insignias on any previous PRID Deluxes? I know we haven't seen molded insginias in years.
GreednGluttony
me no want
Anguirus
'Sa maybe. That's all she gets from me.

I normally snap up Prime Decepticons and fembots without much thought. I don't even mind that they couldn't pull off a triple-change. But she looks like she's wearing a hoodie, and the designers essentially seem to have abandoned model accuracy AND posability. I know that these character models are tough to do justice to, but sheeeesh.
Shin Densetsu
This is one case where I definitely think this character ought to be a voyager to take the spider legs into account. The hindered mobility is a huge disappointment for me.

Can a human alliance human fit in the cockpit?
Ultrawave
I hope the Cyberverse version just turns into a spider, that way we get the spider mode.
Feralstorm
This poor toy seems to be begging for a do-over. Shame it seems unlikely to ever get one.

I do kinda like it in a limited way. Head sculpt looks pretty, and the little sculpted 'con symbols are nice too.
TrueNomadSkies
Haters gonna hate, but this figure's giving me some nice boners, and she'll easily be a must buy for me. Like, I still think the hands look retarded, and its by far from a "perfect" representation, but the 3 issues I have (spider legs, hands, backpack behind her head) will probably be relatively easy fixes, and everything else looks great to me.
TCracker
Underwhelming to say at least. But ~sigh~, I will still get her for the sake of completing the cast.

My thoughts as well. I'll get her, but it does look pretty plain compared to some of the rest.

Thanks for the pics OP.
TrueNomadSkies
Oh for sure. Major props to Pingth for the early look, especially with pics as nice as those.

Also, how much would something like this be to get to a Canadian nerd? I have pretty much no knowledge as to prices in that area or how much shipping crap this way costs, so hopefully someone does.
StarLurker
It's toys like this and Knockout and the fact that I'll probably never get FE Prime or Bulkhead or a silver Voyager Megatron that make me want to quit this series. In fact, I do quit. At least on deluxe and Voyager scale.

If this figure were Cyberverse scale, it would be fine. But there's no excuse of any of this as a deluxe. The backback could have been used to make better limbs. The arms look like Animated Activator Bumlebee's. And there's no articulation. Where is the salvation? Well it's got good colors and copter mode is decent, but that's not what you are here for.

I've already spent approx 100 on deluxes including FE stuff. And with the future looking like this, where the figures look like they were designed to be on a smaller scale or by some first-timer who hates his job... I feel stupid for getting involved in it. Somehow surrounding a bunch of decent toys with this crap makes the whole thing feel like a waste to me.

Here's to hoping they release a decent Cyberverse figure for this character.
transformerwars
It looks kind of, bland.

Still, I'll probably get it, seeing as how she's a show character.

There is Mr Gould from the Human Alliance Soundwave.....he can't get into the cockpit.......

TrueNomadSkies
Even the mini HA guys are prolly too big, but it was a cool thought.

... what about lego minifigs?
feral prime
I cant believe what a letdown this figure is!! I will get it only cause its a show character..Just hoping someone decides to do something for the spider legs...
StarLurker
I wanted to add something. I used to be the type to buy a figure just cause it's an important character and it's all we're gonna get. But I'm sick of it. It's giving them an excuse to make crap. It doesn't matter how much they suck at something if we buy it anyway, so why should they try?
I realize that nothing I say will make a difference, either. And people will continue to buy crap for the sake of completion. But I just can't do it myself. Nothing against anyone who buys it, though. Everyone collects different things for different reasons and we are all wonderful snowflakes.
TrueNomadSkies
Well for what its worth, one of the things I've found through my travels is that different people will wanna buy different shit for different reasons, and transformers are no exception. For example, I personally think MISB collecting is stupid unless you're buying it purely for investment reasons because you're denying yourself so much esthetically (and even then it seems like a lost form these days), but I also get that my opinion only needs to matter for me. I mean, art is gonna be among the most subjective of things, and whether someone wants it because of simply the character/figure/whatever in itself or whether they want it for the sake of completing a larger form of art (such as their display as a whole), its all good.

I tend to want the best of both worlds with things (as I largely see these as individual forms of art that also contribute to a greater scheme of things that I can move around to my liking), but sometimes we've gotta compromise even with ourselves, and I dunno. It's 5am & I haven't slept here, so take that how you like.

... but yeah, call me.

(that last part's directed at Airachnid, not people in this thread. Well, unless of course one of you happens to be her VA, in which case I'd welcome the call with open ears & possibly legs, depending)
Cracka J
I'll still get her just as a semi-placeholder til some 3rd party whips up some magic. A rotor and arm replacement kit (without holehands) for $20 would be an easy sell.
TrueNomadSkies
Also, -rep to StarLurker for stealing my lines & covering them with yellow snowflakes.
Viral
Wonderful pics pingth although I find it a terrible shame this figure didn’t come out as well as many other prime toys. Would it be possible to see some pictures of the underside of the helicopter and a shot of the arms folded up? I’m curious to see how much clearance they have in vehicle mode. Also, what would you say is limiting the head and elbow articulation exactly? Is the head significantly limited by just that weird pilot seat or does the collar details of the chest also get in the way (can she lean her head forward?); and are the elbows limited by the kibble edges blocking each other or are the joints limited in mobility by the accessory ports (basically would cutting/sanding those port holes on her upper arms free the elbows at all?)

I think she's hooked up with Laurence Fishburne, hey.
I'm more of a Sumalee Montano fan myself.

Anyways, I'll pick up Airachnid if only 'cos I'm a sucker for female 'cons, but she looks less than impressive.

Wtf you talkin bout bra

BTW looking at pics again, it seems it COULD be mistransformed. Like the kibble should rotate and that large section should form the giant spider butt of doom.

Well, considering that I had like the biggest crush ever on Gobots Crasher as a kid, I guess its only natural for the grown up me to be falling head over fish for Airachnid, be it for her voice actress (Gina Torres), the television character as a whole, or even the toy.

Seriously though, I also really like the toy for reasons involving just the toy, as the parts of her that aren't shitty seem to be done really well. I especially like that she can cross her legs & shit, and if we're lucky, maybe something can be done about the backpack to flip it around & make the top part become her ass like StarLurker's saying.
Mechafire
So disappointing. Like, what happened? Seriously

EDIT: And just when I think this figure couldn't get any worse, I find out that the back of her head is a chair. What the shit?
Snake_eyes1975
EEEEK!

Not that cool. Whats up with the "3 bladed sword"? did you try that to see how it works?

I wanst impressed with 1st pics, this one just isnt that great.

The same problem as knockout. The transformation is probably just impossible with plastic as it happens on the show.
StarLurker
If the kibble can't swing around, maybe it was originally meant to. But then some guy came and "fixed" it, possibly for safety reasons. If that is the case, then what would be cool is if you could open it up, cut something, and it's right back to the way it should be. Yay speculation.
ORIO
I like it. *shrugs*
konrathink
Could not be any more awful. Those hands alone kill this.
MechaV
So the Cyberverse version; Commander or Legion? Commander scale might be able to do her some justice.
Gilgamesh
I think the hands are the only downright awful part. The rest is a bit disappointing yes, but I've willingly bought worse. I'll be getting one if it ever shows up here.
MechaV
I'm gonna play devil's advocate here and suggest that maybe someone will find an alternate transformation or come up with some simple modifications to improve articulation.
BlueAngel_Bolt
I hope I don't sound like a blasphemer when I say I'm looking forward to Dead End more than her.
D-Unit
I don't think she looks that bad, I'll probably still get the figure, but like others I think this would have a ton more potential as a voyager class

Indeed. She needs a whole lot of paint. She looks like a stick in those photos--does she lack articulation? Rotor blades are huge let down. Why only three? Four would have been nice.

According to the Resources section, Legion.
xanthax
I also like the way she looks with Arcee. I'm getting her in a set with Dead End, who I am really looking forward to.
Smasher
The mold looks good, but the figure really needs some paint.
There's almost none.
Grimlockimus
Reprolabels to the rescue.

That toy is in desperate need of some brighter purple details, I can hardly make out what purple there is, and from a distance, it really looks like just one giant piece of black plastic.
axisvega
Man, I am so glad they sacrificed more legs/better arms/ less backpack for that awesome opening cockpit! I can't wait to not put any small figures inside it!
xElement24x
Maybe this individual should have worked at hasbro and made the mold instead XD

I actually really like it! It would be nice to see some third party legs and a reprolabels set for this gal ^^ Perhaps the little Dr Archevil from the Masterpiece seeker mold can fit?
