On a related note, are you curious about the backstory behind this black version of Optimus Prime? 2005 Boards staff member SydneyY has your back and has shared with us a translation of the bio:
To save his comrades who are infected with Dark Energon, Optimus Prime had his body covered with Energon Defence Coating. This black coating is an alloy Ratchet created by analysing and converting MECH's equipment, and is capable of shielding Transformers from Dark Energon or any biological weapons such as a virus. Optimus' mobility is reduced due to the added weight, but this is the only form he can guard himself from Dark Energon...

It looks like they should've used the box from the Tokyo Toy Show Shining Optimus for Dark Guard Optimus instead.
The legs do look brownish in the pics. Still looks alright, but for some reason I'm not as excited for this release as much as other black redecos, and I'm a black redeco whore so I find this strange.

I'm a whore for the FE Optimus Prime mold.
But, I'm tapped out because of Xmas and usually when we start seeing in package images that means it'll be out really soon.
Does anyone know if this is going to be an end-of-the-month release like most of the recent Takara releases?

He's Cybertron Satelite (selected toy stores, there are 16) exclusive in Japan, but seeing how Robotkingdom is selling him at below Japanese retail, I'd say he is to be released to Asian market as well. The number shouldn't be very limited

I bet nemesis prime would look awesome in this mold.
It is still a very nice figure, but it's just that there are so many dark primes out there.

Nemesis Prime really should've been the FE mold instead of that POS RiD Voyager Prime mold.
I think this Prime looks great and Nemesis Prime looks horrible.
You can't take a POS and dress it up in black, silver, and red and act like it's not a POS anymore because it still stinks.
Plus, the Nemesis Prime colors aren't even show accurate. Nemesis Prime was more of a purple/maroon/burgundy not black.

Yeah, I know right? Nemesis prime isn't black, he is just an Optimus with a much darker color scheme.
I think the voyager RID isn't a bad toy but when you compare him with this version it just falls short.

I think the voyager RID isn't a bad toy but when you compare him with this version it just falls short.

I think it's really funny that for the first time since Armada (not counting IDW), we have an actual Nemesis Prime appearing on-sceen and we end up with TWO black Prime redecos and neither look like he did on the show.
Not saying I don't like the colors on this or the PRiD-mold one, but it felt like they just did their normal quota of black Primes and didn't even bother to notice that there was an actual Nemesis Prime in the show this time.

I love the FE Prime mold, but would much prefer the Nemesis colors. No idea what they were thinking when they came up with this color scheme. Looks like the Jetfire color scheme from the Buster-Jetfire two pack with the brown and black.

It's not exactly the first time a "Black" Optimus Prime has come in these colors. Black Fire Convoy and Black Big Convoy are just some examples of some using the Black/Gold scheme instead of the Black/Red scheme so prevalent these days.

Interesting to note is that the FE mould has as many, or even more [depending on how you count them] releases than the mainline version.
Will probably get this, price is quite cheap for what it is. Barring the hasbro versions, I have every takara version produced for this mould.
It still probably has the misplaced ball joint on the neck, right?
