Transformers Prime Cyberverse Optimus Maximus Review

Posted on 05-24-2012 at 11:47 AM by Sol Fury under Transformers Prime
Transformers-Prime-Cyberverse-Optimus-Maximus-015
The Transformers Prime Cyberverse series is bringing back that mightiest of Transformers - the massive Citybots! Back in Generation 1 these were the likes of Metroplex, Trypticon and Fortress Maximus, huge robots capable of transforming into bases for the smaller toys, and equally big battle station modes.

Recently released in Singapore, the Transformers Prime Cyberverse Optimus Maximus is a return to this concept. He's a big robot version of Optimus Prime capable of transforming into a battle station which can seat up to nine Cyberverse toys! Is this a return to the form of the original Citybots, or just one that's strictly for the kids? Fortunately you only need to read on to find out, as 2005 Boards member pingth has bought an Optimus Maximus and has very kindly provided us with the first review of this new Transformers base-bot!

Thanks for the review Ping. =)

I still think the toy sucks but that's no fault of yours. Thumbs up.
TCracker
Does the head turn?
Yaujta
Too bad about the lack of articulation. I was really excited for it, too. I'll still get it, but it'll probably stay in base mode all the time.

I forsee that head will be used on so many customs...

No, the head cannot turn.

It's cool that Hasbro is trying new things, but man is that thing an abomination.
vm-01
If he could at least split up into smaller vehicles that the cyberverse figures could use it would be way better.
Snake_eyes1975
My son will LOVE this.
The Bucket Kitten
I can't believe I actually wanted this at one point. Great review anyways.
AU Chevy
What is the price of this?
Mechafire
I still want it.
Thelonicon
The vehicle mode looks sort of nice from the side, but then when you look at it from the front and back it just looks like a sitting Optimus Prime that is full of holes. It is a shame that the first new mold base bot we've gotten in I don't know how long is so sloppily done.
eriku
Thanks for the review and pics! I was excited for this thing back when it was first revealed...but later I noticed the cost-cutting based scaffolding-like nature of the sculpt and the unforgivable lack of articulation. It's a shame really, I can see a lot of potential in the thing. Oh well. What could have been...
vm-01
To be fair it's not that much worse than Grandus.
ORIO
I want it. But in different colors. Thanks for the review!
mechfiend
can you take some pics of just the gun? does it fit in rid voyager prime's hand?
ChaosLordX
Got megatron now i need 8 vehicons to aid in piloting the massive thing
Shin Densetsu
So much potential, killed by making this thing hollow and gimmicked out. Thanks for the review, but I will be passing on this.
Flexx Ark
Anything related to Prime Cyberverse means I'm in, but this is definitely one of their weakest efforts so far. The deceptions need something equivalent to this in terms of size (not quality).
Heavynova
Now that I think about it...I would have been all over this as a kid. It kinda feels like a throwback to all the old 80's and early 90's toys that we had, with it's blocky design and whatnot. It's just a little more modernized.

I'm kinda diggin' this guy now, might pick one up...
madman1366
This will probably at some point get packaged with an CV leader Optimus or something and sold as a store exclusive. Hopefully Target cuz that means the wait won't be too long before one can be had on clearance for like $10.
Kaijumaster
Can't wait for Radicons to start going wild with this guy.
dj_convoy II
Looks like Optimus and a Bionicle had an ugly, inarticulated baby.
Goldlock
It looks...alright.

I'll still get it to display since I love the other Cyberverse stuff, but I think it'll have to come down from £35 first.
Transformed
Thanks for sharing, but I have to lol at little ol' Cyberverse Optimus sitting in the driver's seat with a huge Optimus Head atop his own

It looks ridiculous
shibamura_prime
Thanks for the review. It's not as awesome as I was hoping after seeing the very first pictures, but I'm still gonna buy it. I heart me some Cyberverse and bringing back Base Bots in some form or fashion so I'm gonna throw some support down when I see this on shelves.
ShakesDaKlown
The head sculpt looks really good. Don't have any interest beyond that. I'm thinking it's a definite pass.
BlueAngel_Bolt
I love the fact that figures can sit in the arms and legs while it's in its mech configuration.

I'll be picking this up, can never get enough playsets!
zeroomegazx
Let us take a moment of silence for the Abortion that is Bizzaro Powermaster Primes evil twin brother.

Made for kids or not this thing is very disappointing for any age group. Its like swiss cheese. Compare this to any other offering Prime line, or any other recent line has and its such a disgrace.
SPLIT LIP
Considering it's Cyberverse I don't mind the lacking articulation. It's supposed to be a gimmick-filled base to put your little guys on, first and foremost, and it's very not bad.

This post's verbiage insults me.
ahro23
Cool idea but I will not be buying this . I'll look forward to a nice repaint though... there is a TON of detail all over that thing.

Do you have kids?

My boy LOVES rescue bots and cyberverse. I showed him these pics and he is going NUTS. There's a point when toy collectors mature out of being able to see things like a kid, yet they still think they do.

Since I have had kids, I have learned this.

I think kids (especially my boy) will have a riot putting his lil guys in it, on it, making prime take command...

Your post is so self serving that I almost didn't comment just because I know you will never "get" what I'm saying. If kids have a few cyberverse figures, and they can make them work with this as a base, battle station, and mech suit...they will want it.

BAD.

I'll buy it and my boy and me will have a blast..
MegaMoonMan
Yuck, no thanks, horrid, etc.
MisterFanwank
I love the head on this thing.
charsdc2
Depending on the price, I may or may not bite!
Llama G0d
So Maximus doesn't have the detachable light thing to plug into Commander Cyberverse figures like the Starhammer and the Driller do..?
freezah
reminds me of the crappy go-bot powersuit combiner from the 80's. looks crappy.
dtjattan
Thanks for the review, guess I will not be picking this one up.
Noideaforaname
The simplicity is fine for what it is, I'm just not fond of how overly Optimus Prime this is. I can see why they'd do it like that but it just looks odd, particularly since Transformers generally doesn't do that "gimmick vehicle made to evoke the hero"-type of thing that seemingly every other hero does. That in of itself isn't bad (I do have many fond memories of such vehicles), just out of place in a universe where weapons, armor, and occasionally heads are their very own dudes.

Hoping to see more (non-character-themed) base-bots down the road, even if they are just 'generic' --or hell, VEHICON-- repaints.
Hikaru IchijoSL
Wow, this is worse than I ever could expected. The head not does even move.
Afterburner
The idea is OK, but the execution is terrible. He's just really really cheap, not much else to say about it.

Pictures of just the gun:

Yes the gun can be held by the RID Voyager Prime by the hand itself or by pegging into the port at the forearm:

No. Not that I can see....
Harbinger
while looking cool, i cant help but think its Prime's Megazord for some reason.
caked-up
I can totally see myself getting one or two of these so I can get those guns. One for cyberverse figures and one for my rid prime.
Dormamu
This thing reminds me of the old school Star Wars carrying case that was shaped like Vaders head. Good review, and I'm glad you didn't sugar coat it. As someone else said, their kid will love it. And in about six months, it'll wind up at the bottom of the toy box. Kind of at a loss as to why design these to be like updated Metroplexes when really, they're nothing like that. Even the Ark set has the merit of <looking> like the ship in a different form.
Galaxy Convoy
Hmm, disappointing about the overly simple transformation. But not unexpected either. On the whole it's pretty much what I expected a Cyberbase baseformer to be. I still want one for my CV figs, but no way I'll pay full retail for it.
Yobuster
Nice and short, just the way i like it. Good review. After looking at the pics and reading your review, i'm even more sure than before i will NOT be picking this up.
Galvatron Rage
I definitely won't be buying this, but that robot mode looks kinda cool. Too bad it has so little articulation.
