Transformers Aligned Continuity Sideswipe Concept Design

Posted on 11-21-2012 at 03:49 PM by Sol Fury under Transformers Prime
Sideswipe---Bot-mode-final
A second piece of work from Emiliano Santalucia to share with you here. This piece of work is for a concept he did when working with Hasbro to develop a Transformers production and character bible for Hasbro, more than likely the master document detailing Hasbro's Aligned Continuity project which comprises Transformers Prime, the Transformers War for Cybertron video games, and the Exodus novels series.

This piece of concept art was developed entirely by Emiliano Santalucia when he was given free rein by Hasbro's Eric Siebenaler to do his own take on some classic characters, and what you see here is Emiliano Santalucia's concept on what an Aligned Continuity Sideswipe might look like. His concept includes equal measures of Revenge of the Fallen Sideswipe particularly in the wheel-legs and the swords on the arms, and mixes in some classic elements in the head, arms and chest. The final effect is very cool and striking, in this newsie's opinion.

Check out the original post on Emiliano Santalucia's blog for more on the creation process and the background to this piece.

The Bucket Kitten
Awesome design, I would love to get a toy using that design.
Spiderus Prime
Pretty cool of him.
Mechafire
Holy crap, that's awesome!
eagc7
looks good
Shatterpoint
Toy.

Now.
Fallout
that's the kind of thing i wanted from movie sideswipe... a good blend of classics and trying something new.

i need a toy of that.
Ai Megumi
Awesome.

Me like it.
Insane Galvatron
Not digging the chicken legs...

I agree!

But the overall design of Sideswipe is visually pleasing and I would love to see it on a toy or in Transformers Prime!
SPLIT LIP
Nice.
shroobmaster
Dat copy-pasted wheel on his right leg.

Pretty cool. Seems like the perfect blend of Sideswipe from G1 and the Movies.
He also did Thundertron:

Neat design.

Turns into a Diablo lambo.

Has devil legs.

Hey, I like this! Great that it has the same philosophy as Ironhide, synthesize and blend classic look with stand-out movie elements.

Seeing his enthusiasm makes me like Thundertron a little more, lol. I also liked the Destructicons! It was Mudslinger who sucked. I always gave my Destructicons to Smolder, he was a better fit. (I've since sold them to a happy little boy at a yard sale. )
Ra88
Yep, this looks damn good. Though it would have been nice if they mixed G1 and movie a bit more, by doing more with the carhood on his chest. Maybe segment it and have it sit at an angle, the headlights nearer the shoulders...But still, damn cool and I would totally buy a toy.
OMEGAPRIME1983
DIG IT! I totally love the combination of the basic transformers design with the movie aesthetics. He'd fit right into tfp, that's for sure.
Jochimus
'S'O.K. Obviously the intent is to blend elements of the 'classic'/G1 look in with the Movie look (judging by his art for Jazz as well) a la Ongoing, though I have to say I kinda dig how much 'smoother' IMO this art is with the concept.
HoneyPrime
That's really very good. I totally would like to see him in Prime and have a toy like that.
miscreant
Quite inventive, I just don't like it.
Hot Shot.
Eeeewwwwww...Bayformers influence.

Get those chicken legs the fuck away from my Transformers.
PlanckEpoch
Just two things I don't dig about this guy. First, what I DO like is that he's red...and that he's a Lamborghini Gallardo, sorta like how the Classics one is mostly Lamborghini Gallardo with some other car mixed in.

What I don't like is the chicken leg look. Goddamn it...it looks pretty bad and I don't understand **WHY** it has to be there. What's so wrong with humanoid legs? Even other movie bots had humanoid legs, so why not this Sideswipe? I understand they wanted to go for a mix of G1 and Movie, but with this it seems more like only the alt mode and colors are G1, while the bot is purely a movie bot. The artist could do a helluvalot better making it a good blend between the two.

Next...the swords. Fine, I can accept swords...but come on, at least give him pistols too or a carbine of some sort.
hupla
I remember seeing this months ago I think
Fallout
oh wow, just saw the chicken legs. ew
bellpeppers
As a G1 fan... I like the legs.

So do I.

It was originally posted on June 16, Unicron.com and The Allspark discovered it on September 9. I can't find anything about it here on TFW, though, so it appears this is just old "news" that was never highlighted here.
RatTrap1985
I don't mind a dash of movie influence in my g1 guys, but those legs are terrible. The spatula arm flappers are alright, though.
ErbFan28
It's okay
phoenix88
That's a very cool design
Stardust262
Meh. His legs look weird.
Blitz.
its G1 and the movie mixed I guess I cant fault that idea but I hate the legs and I cant see that transformation working for a toy.

Not with the current toy budgeting: I've figured out how the arms would work (think RiD 2.0 vehicon with the tires rotating in to be on his back). Due to there being no backside I don't know where the roof is, but Presumably you'd fold the legs under and the arms back, leaving the roof unaccounted for.

Maybe as a toy it'd have the roof fold down for the head gimmick?

I'm more fussed about how large the legs are while clearly most of the cars shell is located on his arms and chest and you cant just cheat given how the wheels are used.

tho I agree the roof would need to go some place

Maybe the roof has two joints: on is attached to his rear and the legs (bumper folds up?) and the other reveals the head when pulled back.

The legs would presumably hold the car's grill as the stabilizers.
Ravenxl7
It's an interesting design. The legs are a little odd, but other than that it's not bad. I wonder how many of these we'll eventually see.
Primal Sabbath
I love it! Make it happen, now!
Dinodigger97
He looks utterly great. I still don't know why people hate the legs.
Autovolt 127
Please Hasbro. Toy of this guy now or next year.

I swear no matter how dull the character is of Sideswipe his design always rocks.
Grimlock64
Little bit of G1 (which I like), little bit of Movieverse (which I also like)... makes for a just-right representation.

I agree with everyone saying "Make a toy of this"
PowermasterJazz
I love this! I wanna see more g1/movie hybrids!
Omnius
Dear Hasbro,

Toy. Now.

Love,

Omnius

The Swordsman
My body was not ready....

This design needs to be put in a toy-line and/or TV show yesterday!
iconbot
Looks just like the movie Sideswipe. Nice!
Kaijumaster
I....I don't understand, this thread is 5 pages long and LAMBOTWINLOVE isn't breaking this place in half with her Nerd love! LOL
Paxtin
Neat.
Movie Sideswipe had a lot of characteristics that I really dug, so it's cool to see a more streamlined variation.

I like the legs, but then I'm also one of those odd Trans-fans who doesn't think robots need to always be humanoid.
And no, I don't agree that making them more physically human makes them more relatable as characters. That's just shallow.
MrSoundmeister
Damn,he's good. no really,i dig his design. besides,i kinda like his wolfchicken legs thank you very much. it kinda gives him a Anubis-esque appearance. besides,i wonder what he will be retooled into then. dont say his brother, that's kinda a predictable response.

I could see this guy redecoed into a primeverse Darksteel
Transformed
Don't care much for the legs, but this is a pretty sweet design. Wish he had his shoulder rocket though.
