Roberto Orci on what's next for Transformers after Transformers Prime

Posted on 08-07-2013 at 06:55 PM by Sol Fury under Transformers Prime

Roberto Orci, who along with Alex Kurtzman excutive produced Transforemers Prime, has taken part in a brief Q&A session with IGN and confirmed his involvement in the next Transformers show.

A key point of the discussion that will interest many of you is the statement about what is coming next. "Itís not really a reboot, itís sort of a continuation of it [Transformers Prime] in a tonally different form." - Orci goes on to explain that this means they want to service the right audiences, they don't want to scare little kids the way Transformers Prime sometimes could. Essentially a parallel series that is "connected" but friendly to the family. In response to a follow-up question on this, Orci states that the look will be more kid-friendly, but the wit will still be there, it won't be any less entertaining or any less like Transformers, but they don't want to put off little kids with the series' intensity.

One thing that is interesting is that when asked if Transformers Prime as a story will be in continuity with this series, Roberto was non-committal, explaining that this very issue is currently under discussion - so while not a complete reboot, it sounds as though the new series being a direct sequel is equally not confirmed.

Yay.

This is interesting. Hopefully we'll see some of the old characters from Prime return for the new series.

So something more family friendly, simpler designs, and possibly a sequel to Prime?

I wouldn't mind it.

Smokescreen Prime anyone?
Bumblethumper
not much to go on here. Sounds like it's the same creative team, for better or worse.

'Family friendly' isn't necessarily a bad thing. They'll probably have a new look and brighter colours.
Flexx Ark
Not exactly what I want to hear, but I'll take it.

A reminder to people that "toning it down" probably just means "less wanton killing of guys all over the place."

As let's face it, Prime had quite the body count.

And if the current people are doing the show still, cool. They found their footing by the end of the series in terms of balancing plot/action (it took too long, but still) and producers like Orci/Kurtzman have good connections for getting guest voices.

And if it's being toned down, the violence/fight scenes can't be as much of a crutch for the writers, that said. Rescue Bots S1 was consistently a better series than Prime S1 on account of it having better writing, despite the target demographic/audience being different.

All the rumors we've heard sound like the same guidelines Animated operated under. And as long as we don't have Man of Action running the series, we should be good.

im all for this but the things that made Prime so great for me was its dark and intense moments now i have been proven wrong when new shows are promoted as being more family friendly and stuff and in the end ive enjoyed them (IE rescue bots) but if this IS supposedly a continuation of prime im just not sure how this will work but nonetheless im keeping an opened mind.

Thanks for sharing, some of our answers have been answered, which is good news.

This "toned down" series, don't know, I'm going to keep an open mind, on this one.

I'm really going to miss the CGI in TFP.

i really don't want the writers of prime to continue to write transformers, prime is such a terrible transformers series that I want something new. ugh at least I have the idw ongoing comics to entertain me
Mechafire
Hopefully this means it'll be more "fun" and less "LOOK HOW HARDCORE WE ARE! GRIMDARKNESS AND SHOCK DEATHS OMG!"
SPLIT LIP
I really hope the tone is lighter so we can have some fucking PERSONALITY in this show.

We got to do a very adult version of Transformers that you just saw in this cartoon, a very sophisticated one

What do you know, the Prime creators DO have a sense of humour!
Burnout
I hope by kid friendly they don't mean out of proportion TFA style crap. at least SOME of the prime figures were relatively proportionate and oculd fit in with a normal classics/generations collection.

A nice middle ground between the 'scariness' (to little ones) of Prime with the more light tone of Animated would be preferred. Just please for the love of God DO NOT do it in the animation style of Rescue Bots. I hate Flash Animated cartoons as a general rule and although R.B.'s works for its core audience the new iteration of Prime needs to strike a balance both in tone and style. It's not full kiddy but according to Orci isn't full adult themes either.

As others of similar mind seem to be echoing, few have a problem with this. It's the idea that it might go fully kiddy that scares me most at this point. Until I see planned animation, character designs, etc., I'll reserve judgement, but I'm carefully skeptical for now.
Hollywood Hoist
I'm glad they'll be doing a toned down show.

parnets be standing at Hasbro 's front door about this new series

I hope the 2d means we get MORE characters. Sticking with the same 12 people is kinda boring.

As long as Arcee and Wheeljack come back, I'm in.

I think he is speaking in terms of writing for the show, not the aesthetics of the figures.

It really has me wondering what direction it's going to take. Will the war continue? Or will it just be a matter of quelling uprisings? If it is gonna be tonally lighter feel, I'm guessing the latter.

Omg this is the post movie era kids dont want simple their not stupid they know whats cool and whats not give youre audience some credit. My oldest son was five when armada came out and could transform them right out of the package no directions ..wtf to that hasbro. Looks like shelves will be clogged with crap for years to come . More time to be frustrated by not finding the stuff that i want
Timesynch
Hopefully it's as good as TF Animated.

Same here. Hope they don't make it too much like Rescue Bots, otherwise I won't be watching it.
Brave Magnus
Well, it IS a sequel or sounds like it might be so that's a positive point. Hm..the "more kid's friendly" I can understand, Bulkhead ripping a Vehicon's chest can scare lil kids. Changing the designs..meh, this is Transformers, designs change all the time. XD
So yeh..good news in overall. ^^
Ironhide4
I really don't like orci and kurtzman's involvement in Transformers, I really don't know how these guys get work, they are awful writers and I am sick of them having a hand in Transformers.

parnets will turn off tv - no new tfs series for younger kids
Rexidus
This does not inspire me with confidence. Also it sounds like the continuity cluster f*** is going to continue.
Laserbot
I am happy to hear its a continuation sereis! not so happy about the fact its going to be more kidy...

I hope that just because its more famly oriented doesnt mean they will "dumb down" the writing for kids. Kids are more intelligent then you think give them some credit.

I personally enjoy a darker more adult themed Transformers Series as opposed to the YAY were kids with Giant robots that get to do things that our (non existent) parents would never allow in real life!

The way I look at it is Hasbro has gotten it right with a kidie show like Rescuebots and an more adult version like Transformers Prime. Not to mention Prime has the right astetics! I am so sick of seeing low quality Animated Cartoons just because a studio wants to save a few bucks in production.

I see no need to use the Prime continuity to appeal to younger viewers because thats what the rescue bots storyline is for. However not having to worry about your favorite character Kicking the bucket in almost every eps you watch would be nice too. I cant tell you how many times I was worried for a character or two in Prime.

A lighter tone seems pretty natural at this point if it ends up being a Prime sequel. No more dead planet, the monster that destroyed it in first place is dead, they're rebuilding and kept a link to Earth. I think it will end up just fine being more kid-friendly.

Besides, being more kid-friendly than the last show is... not very hard. Mutilated and tortured human dying on-screen during a zombie invasion? There's creepy guys in trench coats that are less creepy than that.
Rumblestorm
You can have the world's best writers all assigned the next transformers show, and I bet atleast 50% of the fandom will still find a lot to whine about -_-
Oh well. If they're taking this route, I hope that the lowest they'll tone it down is in a transformers animated writing tone. As a huge fan of TFA, I can totally live with that.
General Magnus
Iīll wait and see before I praise it/bash it.

Shocking reaction, I know!

Hurm that makes sence... I hope that is what they are refering too more then just hey lets dumb it down for kids again!
ZeroMayhem
Orci and Kurtzman are still going to be involved? Well there goes all my hopes and dreams for the new series. I give every series a shot but it's been far too long since I actually enjoyed one.

I was glad we were finally moving on but with those two still in tow my anticipation is severely mitigated.

Moooooar Bulkhead, please!!!
