Interview With Ernie Hudson

Posted on 05-17-2012 at 12:17 AM by ORIO under Transformers Prime
ernie1
Geek To Me had the opportunity to interview actor Ernie Hudson. Mister Hudson is famous for various roles in Ghostbusters, Congo, and The Crow. But, Transformers fans know him more recently as Agent Fowler in Transformers Prime. Below is an exerpt from the article detailing what they spoke to Ernie about.

With Transformers Prime approaching it's mid-season hiatus, Hudson took time to answer some questions for Geek To Me. In our e-mail interview, Hudson talks about the difference between acting for films and animation; what his dream role would be; what he knows about a potential Ghostbusters sequel; and what kind of autobot he would create for himself.

Click the title bar to read the full interview!

While many know him for his role in the Ghostbusters movies, Ernie Hudson has had a very long and distinguished career that goes way beyond his time wearing the proton pack. After starting off with ambitions of being a playwright, he would go on to accrue over 100 credits in film and television, most notably in the aforementioned Ghostbuster films and as a regular cast member in the acclaimed prison series "OZ" on HBO.

Hudson is now cementing his presence in the pop-culture landscape as a voice-actor in the popular animated series Transformers Prime. He voices the role of Agent William Fowler, a US Government agent who acts as a liason to the Autobots. He's described by the Transformers Wiki as a "former Army Ranger" who is a "tough talking, robot dissing" character.

With Transformers Prime approaching it's mid-season hiatus, Hudson took time to answer some questions for Geek To Me. In our e-mail interview, Hudson talks about the difference between acting for films and animation; what his dream role would be; what he knows about a potential Ghostbusters sequel; and what kind of autobot he would create for himself:

Geek To Me: When you first agreed to take the role of Agent Fowler for Transformers Prime, did you ever think the show would gain the notoriety that it has?

Ernie Hudson: When I first took the role of Agent Fowler I didn't think much about how popular it would or would not be. It wasn't until I met everyone at the first session that I became a believer and genuinely felt we had something truly special.

G2M: Were you a fan of Transformers before you became involved with the series?

EH: I wasn't a hardcore fan. I have four sons who all love the franchise. I was more aware of it through them.

G2M: You can create your own Transformer character: What's your name?; Would you be an Autobot or Decepticon?; And what vehicle would you transform into?

EH: If I could create my own Transformer character, it would be named Vanquish and he would transform into an Aston Martin. He would be the coolest, most sophisticated Autobot of them all.

G2M: The show has the distinction of having both a member of the Scooby Gang (Frank Welker) and a Ghostbuster on the cast; do you and Frank ever discuss teaming up and solving a ghostly mystery?

EH: Frank and I have never discussed solving a ghostly mystery but now that you've brought it up, I think it's about time we did.

G2M: What's the difference between acting and voice acting for an animated series or a video game - like you did for the Ghostbusters video game?

EH: The difference between voice acting and acting for me is, you don't have your entire instrument to tell the story. It has to be all in the sounds and it's up to others to fill in everything else. I love it, but I'm not in control of Agent Fowler's physicality.

G2M: In all your interactions with fans, how different are fans of Transformers from - let's say - fans of Oz?

EH: The fans of Transformers tend to be more upbeat and optimistic. In general a lot more fun. OZ fans are more pessimistic and downbeat. In general, not as much fun to hang out with.

G2M: You hold the distinction of being the only minority character in the Ghostbusters franchise, how would you like to see that addressed in potential future films? Or do you think it's not that big a deal?

EH: I don't think the issue of minority characters in Ghostbusters is a BIG deal, but I do hope movies in general will consciously reflect the very diverse demographics of not just America, but the world we all actually live in.

G2M: Okay, I would be remiss if I didn't ask the question that everyone always asks: What's the latest news on Ghostbusters 3?

EH: As far as GB 3, I'm not at all involved in the creative development process of the movie, so I have absolutely no information to share. I had conversations with most of the key players and
everyone has expressed an interest in making it happen. I, like the fans, would love to see it happen and have no idea as to why it hasn't already.

G2M: Is there a dream role/show out there that you're still chomping at the bit to get into?

EH: In the mid-seventies I did the play the "Great White Hope." It was loosely based on the life of Jack Johnson, the first Black Heavyweight Champion. For years I've been wanting to tell his true story. I'm focusing my time and energy into making that happen.

G2M: Where can we expect to see you next?

EH: Next up, I can be seen from time to time in "Secret Life of the American Teenager" on ABC Family channel. I have a movie soon to be released with John Schneider called "Doonby," and another called "Mickey Matson and the Copperhead Conspiracy," a children's adventure film.

G2M: Thank you for taking the time to answer these questions!

He came to the Albuquerque Comic Expo last year and I caught him while he was walking in. Very nice guy and he's a lot taller in person. I thought his hand was going to crush mine.

Well, he was charging quite a bit for photos and autographs if I remember correctly. Which is why I was happy to catch him on the street. :/

yeah i'd probably pay just to meet him, can't say for any other actors at conventions. I did get to meet John Carpenter one of the few guys who signed for free at a convention.

Mid-season hiatus? I think that'll be Toxicity, since apparently it will have effects on the rest of the season. I'd rather not go the whole summer without new episodes, though, so presumably if they try to finish around the same time as last year, they'd have to start again about July or August...

But Ernie is a badass. That's all that needs to be said.
CyclonuS_ZerO
Ernie Hudson is a classy guy. He's been in quite a few of of my favorite movies. Very talented, all around actor. Really hope we get to see him reprise Zeddmore!
Bahamut Prime
I love this guy as an excellent voice actor for TFP! He really brought Special Agent Fowler to life!

Charge for an autograph? Really? I would laugh in the face of any egotisitcal actor that required payment for a signature. These people are fortunate we all care about their work in the 1st place. I would say hi to Ernie Hudson if I saw him in person, but if he asked for payment for an autograph I would walk away w/o saying a word.

Payment for autographs is how a lot of shows cover the costs of bringing guests in, as well as enticing them to take time from their schedules to do so.

Don't want to pay? Don't, it's totally up to you, but it's extremely common and a model that works for a lot of shows, such that in many cases the autograph/photo lines are the only place to really meet and talk to the guests.

Mr. Hudson seemed like a really nice guy when I met him, and I hope his health is improving.

Man, this guy is awesome! I imagined his replies in Agent Fowler's voice and it was epic!

"His name would be Vanquish, and he would transform into an Aston Marton. He would be the coolest, most sophisticated bot of them all."

Guy's got taste XD

No kidding, an Aston Marton?!

I think he would have been better than Drift.

Ernie Hudson is awesome.
He is perfect as Agent Fowler.

I like how he was honest and said he was aware of the franchise but wasn't a hardcore fan, but then he says this:
Quote:

And shows that he gets it -perfectly.
jerminator
Ernie Hudson is awesome to meet. I had the pleasure of meeting him back in October at a horror con in Gatlinburg, TN. Funny thing...I found Transformers toys there...and bought a couple, but upon meeting Mr. Hudson, I totally forgot about Prime and went into Ghostbusters/The Crow fanboy mode. The man is a class-act all around.

Back in 97-98 I worked at a Hallmark store in NYC which a friend of mine owned and celebrities used to shop there all of the time.

A few times Ernie Hudson came in to buy some Beanie Babies for his kids and we would chat for awhile.

He's a really nice guy!

Vanquish the Aston Martin? Hngngnghhhh...

Then you're going to be laughing at 99% of actors out there, friend. This is what conventions are about (amongst other things). It's not like they charge for an autograph if you were to meet them on the street (okay, some douchy ones might). We're talking about charging at conventions. They really only charge if they're at conventions. Want Stan Lee's autograph at the Calgary Comic Expo? Pay $50. Want an autograph or picture with George Takei at some Star Trek convention? Most likely have to pay. It's rarely the actor's decision to be paid for autographs, it's more likely their rep/agent.

And to have the attitude of "these people are fortunate we all care about their work in the 1st place" is laughable. That's like having the erroneous disposition of "Custodians are lucky they have a job." No, we are lucky that we have custodians looking after the cleanliness and overall state of being in facilities that we use. Yes, actors are fortunate that we care. We are also fortunate that we get to meet these people that we care about. It's goes both ways. Without fans, 'famous people' wouldn't be as big of a deal. Without 'famous people', we fans would have less people to 'care about'.

"Besides, who would you be without us, actors?"

We don't want them to respond "Time to find out."

I think you're right on as to when the cliffhanger will happen. We'd have seen previews, episode descriptions, etc., for the next shows beyond Toxicity by now if things were continuing on unfettered.

This times over 9000. Perfectly stated.

Hudson is great in this role as Fowler.

Hmmm....looks like I was right about the mid season hiatus (posted that theory in another thread). Perhaps Toxicity gives us some sort of a cliffhanger ending (discovery of Shockwave?/New Bots?/A character death?) and then.....we wait. Just my opinion, but I think that the hiatus may last a while. Like the entire summer. I don't like it but it makes some sense to me. Take the summer off when viewership is down and start up again in September with 12 or so episodes left to carry the show through the Holiday Season and market the toyline. I do hope if they do that, then they give us a proper cliffhanger and not just have this "T-miniseries" wrap up in a nice little package and then nothing for a long time. Also, and this is strictly wishful thinking on my part, when the series starts up again in fall, new characters emerge with their toys hitting the market in time for holiday season 2012!!

Ernie Hudson is awesome, he busts ghosts and doesn't 'fraid of anything.

Vanquish sounds a lot like a Jazz expy but he'd be cool to see as a reality.

Anyone who meets Ernie should saunter up to him and speak thusly ;

"Excuse me Mr. Hudson, There is one thing i'd really like to say to you.... (pause)"

"Banana Fish!"

I'm curious that since it's now saying "mid-season hiatus," are there actually more than 26 episodes this season.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I'm not denying that some fans idolize actors/singers, be it Justin Bieber, George Clooney, Lady Gaga or even Ernie Hudson. There is a level of crazy that some people reach with idolizing entertainers. But there's absolutely nothing wrong with enjoying someone's work and wanting to meet them. If that means paying $50 bucks for Ernie to sign your Blu-Ray copy of Ghostbusters, then hey, so be it. If that's what you want to do, the more power to you. But don't act like all actors are greedy sons-of-b**ches whose sole purpose at conventions is to squeeze every last penny out of their 'adoring' fans.

Your above quote of my words are way out of context. I would laugh in an actors face if they asked me to pay for an autograph. I, however, do not find anything funny about one person thinking that another is better or more valuable than another. That is what I find sad.

I don't know Ernie Hudson. Even if I did I would try not to pull judgment on him. He seems like a nice guy, but everyone does when there is $ involved.

These people do a job just like you and I (assuming you are not a social parasite, of course). They should be treated the same as I would had I et you on the street. I understand that is not the most realistic way to be in the world today, but I try to give everyone the same equal respect i give myself.

I know they're out of context; I just found the parallel humourous.

Quite true, quite true. (Yes, I do have a job. I'm only a social parasite to people like my mother.)
