of carefully hand-painted prototype figures, cherry picked to look ten times better than anything you'll find at retail, in order to deceive you into buying them.
The figures you shell out for in the store won't look nearly this good. They never do. It's all just shameless hype, more false advertising.

Actualy those are pics of production samples, some of the times they even got bad paint, of course they do choose the best units avaible but they're going through the same production process and in theory you could find toys just as good.
Now if we were talking about back box pictures...

Blazemaster looks the worst (when compared to his photoshop image) of all 4.
Still, this is the only wave I plan to get all 4 new figures from.

Though I highly doubt it'll be on the toy, the "Suck my popsicle" sticker is on the passenger side in vehicle mode and I don't believe we've seen picture of that side yet.

That's the Movie 1 Arcee.
The ROTF Arcee is in Wave 5 with Swerve, Stalker Scorponok, etc.

The difference in quality between the photoshopped pics and the actual product is really starting to get out of hand.
A bit of airbrush "enhancement", say adding a nice metallic sheen that's going to be absent on a plastic toy doesn't bother me. Adding nonexistent paint-apps on the other hand, is crossing into the realm of false advertising. Most figures are packaged in vehicle mode; consumers rely on the "back of box" picture to ascertain what the robot mode will look like. That photo should be an actual picture of the toy inside, not an artist's representation of what it would look like if you contract FrenzyRumble to paint it for you.
Paint apps are not trivial; plenty of great molds have been tarnished through plastiky-blandness. If Hasbro is not willing to spend the money to put those paint apps on their toys that's fine; they shouldn't be advertising them on the back of the packing.
In any case, their tarted-up Blazemaster had my interest, but once you see 'em with the makeup off...*shudder

"Starting to get out of hand"? Looks like same-old same-old to me.
Those paint apps were likely originally planned, but dropped for budget reasons. It's not intentional deception. It's why the back of every Transformers packaging says "Products and colors may vary".
...Actually, comparing this to the original Wal-Mart image, it looks like a lot of the difference in color isn't due to dropped paint apps, but rather a switch in plastic color. Proto-Blazemaster had blue-face and bronze-head, which is switched on this pic. There's no way that happens when nothing but a few paint apps are budgeted out.
