Fans were kind of worried whether or not Transformers 3 will receive an IMAX version? (3D yes, but IMAX…? That was the question). ComingSoon.net has the answer.
The IMAX Corporation announced today they’ve signed an agreement with Paramount Pictures for four tent-pole movies being released in 2011 to be shown day and date in IMAX(R) theaters. The four movies are J.J. Abrams’ Super 8 released on June 10, the Abrams’ produced Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, once again starring Tom Cruise and directed by Brad Bird, set for December 16, the previously announced Transfomers: Dark of the Moon, directed by Michael Bay, on July 1, and Steven Spielberg’s The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn two weeks later on December 28 (in the United States)
Update: IGN says… “Transformers: The Dark of the Moon and The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn, both originally shot in 3D, will be digitally re-mastered into IMAX’s format for presentation in IMAX 3D.”
With it, we have the confirmation. Transformers: Dark of the Moon will hit theaters on 1st of July, 2011 in 3D and IMAX.

Not sure you will have that option. IMAX 3D films typically do not get showcased in 2D as most IMAX theaters only have one screen and therefore will only show one film, the 3D version. I don't think I've ever seen a IMAX 3D movie offered in just normal IMAX.
Cyber-Scream
I'll see it in IMAX but not IMAX 3D.

Agreed. I saw TF2 in IMAX and was in the back row and even there it was too much. Felt like I had a hangover. It was cool but not for me. And I am not sure about seeing it in 3d or 2d yet, the first two were fine without 3d so even if Bay says dont see it in 2d, it wont affect my decision

Heh. The IMAX at my theatre just opened in November. For me, the IMAX sound and picture quality is worth it, even if it isn't the 6-story high screen I typically associate with IMAX. And IMAX 3D is better than Real-D 3D that most digital theatres are using- but for our theatre, that's because two separate projectors are used, so you're not losing half of the frames per scene.

I enjoyed ROTF in IMAX, hopefully our IMAX will back 100% by the time DOTM is released.. after the May floods it had been closed for a while–think they were supposed to be showing IMAX films just b4 Xmas.

TFcollecterguy
HA! So did I. Will probably see this in Imax. Just because.
Ironhide9012
Does this mean extra footage like with the rotf wal mart blu ray exclusive?

UNICRON!? No wait Unicorn. Damn it! Don't do that! putting unicorn next to a transforms movie title what's wrong with you?
Transbot90210
Because for $7,000,000 you too can blow up your film from regular 35mm film into 70mm IMAX film.

Saw the first two movies in IMAX and regular theaters and I much prefer regular theaters. The only reason I saw them in IMAX at all was because it was free and also because Michael Bay came to introduce ROTF (I saw it at the Udvar-Hazy Museum IMAX theater). The IMAX screen is simply too big, even sitting in the back row, making it hard to follow fast motion sequences. The sound doesn't particularly impress me either.

IMAX 3D is the best. I love watching movies in it. A little bit sad that TF3 didn't get shot in IMAX due to the 3D cameras, but it isn't a big deal. I'll wait until the 2nd or 3rd day to go to hear how the IMAX conversion went. Sometimes you go and see a film all stretched out poorly and just ugly looking. If a film is properly converted, and if the theater is a real IMAX and not one of those stupid little fake IMAXs, the films look great on that screen.
grimlock1972
Id have top either Drive to Duluth which is about 195 miles or so or down to the twin cities which is about 250 miles to get to the nearest one. so I'll be content with a regular theater.

YES! man this makes me happy. i would go see an imax movie any day over 3d. imax is WORTH the 7 extra bucks. and some movies, like transformers, and inception, you NEED to see in imax. so YAY for DOTM in imax!
jasonmako
Oh I love IMAx and especially 3D. If you sit in just the right spot you loose your peripherals and get immersed! Man Steven Spielberg is crushing it, DOTM, Super 8 and Secrets of Unicron…lol
MadCatTonton
Wait a minute, was this film shot with the IMAX cameras and the Pace 3D cameras?
I know they used the Pace Rig but didn't Nelson say
"There will be a 3D reel but it's not in IMAX format (70mm). IIRC, they did not use IMAX cameras this time around."?
So what's the point of raving about it being shown in IMAX when the there is no IMAX (size) scenes?! It's just going to be a 3D film shown in the IMAX.
Well anyway, I'm still planning on watching at the IMAX!
SideswipePrime
lol so did i. but i never bought into the whole 3d trend either, i doubt im gonna see it in 3d
Sentinel
Qft. I personally hate the trend towards 3D. As Transbot said, it removes me from the film. I would much prefer good old regular 2D IMAX for DOTM.
