Given the vast quantities of memorable G1 Autobots with defined, iconic personalities and massive fan-followings, he seems a bit of an odd choice to say the least, but the movieverse tends to more or less do its own thing with the personalities anyway, so I guess it isn't a big deal.
Heck, on consideration, maybe they chose this character specifically to confound the purists...

This news doesn't really do anything for me. The Beat isn't my favorite car and Skids isn't one of my favorite characters. I'll just wait and see how the character ends up in the movie.

I don't think it was purposely blurred out per se. Part of the big Jalopnik watermark covers the plate (unintentionally, I think) and caused it to be blurred as a result.
It's hard to tell, but it at least looks like the plate starts with an M.

This is actually a pretty good choice. The original Skids was a small hatchback car and his alternator had tacky flame stickers on the sides. Movie Skids is a small hatchback car with tacky tribal stickers on the sides. And if the robot mode is similar to the leaked Trax bot design (I'm assuming it is, being they're twins and all) then he should look somewhat similar to G1 Skids.
The only inaccuracy, so far, seems to be the color.

Not really.....Jazz was silver, Ironhide was black, Ratchet was green and Prime had flames. Really no G1 affiliation with the color choices other than the Bee.

Well..this is just speculating from my part..I don't know all the bots in the new movie, but color choice was pretty obvious in the first movie. If they would have gone with the G1 colors we would have had:
2 red vehicles (Prime & Ironhide)
2 white vehicles (Ratchet & Jazz)
1 yellow vehicle (Bumblebee)
2x2 bots that look the same, plus the fact red doesn't let itself be shot very good on film, and the fact that white is pretty boring. I'd say more than enough reason for variation.
So far, looks like they're doing the same for the new bots..a new silver one, a red one and a green one..and then the Blue Volt that has been seen driving along that may or may not be an Autobot..

You're right. Some other people have pointed me to this. I wasn't very familiar with the character and when I google searched I thought it looked like a van (not even talking about the Alternators Scion version btw)..but you are right.
Rechecked the Marvel comics, it's definitely not as big as my mind made me believe.
