Roberto Orci Discusses Scene Additions, Fan Love, Starscream, and 40 Robots

As well as posting right here at TFW2005 on our 2005 Boards, Transformers screenwriter Roberto Orci also has a long-running Question & Answer thread at Don Murphy's message board. In recent days, Roberto has answered several questions that provide some further excitement to fans. Among the details revealed are:

* With many of the Decepticons being CGI, there is more freedom to add scenes in post-production. Adding extra scenes with Transformers is currently under consideration.
* As a follow-up, Roberto said one extra scene being considered was director Michael Bay's idea with Bay saying, "You and the fans are gonna love this..."
* Starscream's character will be more similar to his Generation One self.
* Roberto states that Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura's comments in Empire that there are around 40 robots was not an exaggeration.

I'm loving the Starscream and 40+ robots comments!

Fan service, tons of bots and G1 Starscream's attitude, I'm loving the sounds of this.
Starscreamer95

Serve fan boy goodness. One of the scenes we're mulling over was Bay's idea, and he pitched it as, "you and the fans are gonna love this..."
its the scene at the end where devastator starts breakdancing to 'the touch', just like his toy does

this is him doing it, you can't see much though because he's kicking up quite a bit of sand

knook
Awesome
Laser_Optimus
Sounds interesting to say the least. Very excited for this movie.

Everything sounds good to me. The anticipation is gradually building. Though the thought of 40 bots in one movie is a little daunting. Most of those will probably just be background characters that get little, if any , characterization, while the main characters get the majority of the attention. Not a bad thing, imo, but it will be interesting to see how big of a role some of the new characters will play in the overall movie.

I HOPE that we get background characters with little characterisation.

That way we can get epic battles with redshirts galore.
robvega214
Bay's idea is to CGI peter cullen into the film
Brave Magnus
hooray! I would be lying if i say those comments are not exciting. The 40 robots info is awesome but i'm more interested in knowing about that misterious scene.
SPLIT LIP
Epic news. I'm lovin' what I'm hearing.
Torque
hmm, i wonder if they will have Transformer toys actually in the movie? like in Fantastic Four, the Thing gets his catch phrase from the toy. so maybe there will be something involving the toys in the movie? that would be pretty kool IMHO
Liselotte
Volt is officially confirmed. Especially from one of Bob's previous post mentioning Volt and give some details about him (Volt).
Soundwave84
that is exciting news....i like that he wants to get us more involved with the film!!
Beastbot X
HELLS YES. Can't freaking wait!
Smokescreen
It all sounds good to me. June 26th can't come fast enough!

I'm not. Animated already does that sort of Starscream better, so a movie version would just pale in comparison. I'd rather Starscream follow his Movie comic portrayal, as an antihero on the wrong side of the war, with misguided aims.
Mega-con
Orci sure knows how to get our TF pants a rockin'.
Maximus_Prime
I can't wait for this movie! just bring on the trailer so this board will explode with discussion...then actually explode

Well maybe it shows how low Starscream has become in his quest; we'll have to see how it plays out on screen to debate whether it decanonizes the comics' portrayal. It's not surprising though since Orci has not been involved in the comics since the Movie Prequel.

It's too bad he was unable to participate in the production of The Reign of Starscream like he planned to.
Alienbot
But if he had, then maybe we wouldn't have Mowry's excellent anti-hero. Mowry's Starscream is presumably based on the ROTF script, so if Orci decides to play up slimier elements of the character, who was a blank slate in the first film and very slimy in the prequel comics and novel, so be it; something similar happened in Star Trek when Gene Roddenberry rejected the "In a different reality, I could have called you friend," aspect of the Romulans heavily emphasized in the novels and had them become something Spock would not want to mate with.
GAUGE
40 robots all crammed into a 30 second final battle pyrimid scene woohoo lol j/k

but seriously 40 robots in an hour and a half movie? how? it's gonna be overrun w/ humans.

This will be interesting to see to say the least.

I sure hope so - they "did it" in the ROTF prequel comics. Would be cheap & easy...

though I think it's more sort of stuff.
scott2781
I'm glad we have more of a G1 Starscream, but it's a shame we might not ever get that megs starscream banter we all know and love.

40+ bots

Seeing how it's a big budget summer movie, I'm pretty sure it'll be longer than 90 minutes.

Well, the prequels I'm sure were written with the ROTF script in mind.

So odds are Mowry's Starscream reconciles somewhat with whatever the movie's doing in the end.

Keep in mind that Starscream as we've seen him in Mowry's universe is a warrior who wants to lead the Decepticons, and has his own ego problems.

It's just a different spin on it all. We're likely not going to see Starscream's own perspective on it in the movie - just everyone else's.

how can Movie Screamer have the G1 Screamer attitude if there's no Megatron to reflect it on?
Ephland
I don't think Starscream's attitude is going to be exactly like his G1 character.

My guess is that Starscream is going to want to be in charge, but fail at his attempts. Even better, I'm thinking he's going to try to awaken The Fallen to add to his (SS) power, and it's going to backfire epically.
brawl569
7 of the robots are the constructicons plus devastator so theres 8
Rodimus Mike
Hey if this extra scene Bay talks about that we will love I have high expectations then.
I wish I had a time machine to take me to June 26th right now.

i agree but if megatron dose return then he will have a g1 atitude unless he becomes galvatron n kills starscream he he cant wait till see it
Optimus1986
I just hope that the big surprise isn't Galvatron showing up and decimating Screamer like in TFTM. Way too soon. But...you know Bay...

Orci already stated the movie is going to be just as long as the first one, if not a little longer. (144 minutes)
alien
Starscream!
Ash from Carolina
I'll take Starscream from just about any series as long as it means he actually gets to say something instead of being the silent type. That G1 seems to be where they are getting the ideas isn't a bad thing because we've already seen with Animated that kind of Starscream can still work in a different story.

Too bad they couldn't do anything about Starscream being fat and ugly, but hey at least some personality this time couldn't hurt.

Sort of worried though about Bay's

"You and the fans are gonna love this..."
. Not exactly a good track record of giving me stuff to love, but who knows maybe the guy has changed and figured out doing stuff to make fans happy isn't always stuff that would hurt his movie plans.

Peter Cullen's holodriver cameo was in the comics because it was in ROTF's script (as Orci said here).

TF1 was over 2 hours long and TF2 is supposed to be longer!
MekaGojira3k
Huzzah for G1-ish Starscream
G1Wheeljack
40 'bots totall screams 2 things to me: tons of toys & cannon fodder, still cool though. Somewhat interested in Starscream being more like his G1-self, it's just that I really like what was done with him in RoS & hope they don't stry to much from that. I really hope they add in some more scenes with the 'cons.

You read my super secret totally authentic script didn't you.
GAUGE
they can pull it off as long as the movie is at least 2 1/2 hours I suppose.

I'm sure the surprise Bay is talking about is Holo Driver cullen
Simian
I don't understand the comment "Since most of the Decepticons are CGI we can add scenes in post...."

What else would they be???????......besides the little puppets for Frenzy etc......I find it just a weird comment.....
Alienbot
What I think it means is their alternate modes too. The Constructicons would have been too expensive to rent, Megatron and Soundwave's Cybertronian forms don't exist in real life and the military will not have an F-22 Raptor graffitied over like Starscream.
Digilaut
40 robots is cool. Even if the 'rest' of them are just background character, it adds to the 'old' TF feel. Movie one only had a handful of bots and cons, and I don't really mind if they still focus on a core group, but having the feeling more than 2 new bots arrived to Prime's call would be nice.

Starscream more like G1? Nice! With the current movie comics Starscream, I was kind of fearing they'd steer away from that, but it seems the movie will do it 'right'. Awesome!

Interesting news! I would like to know, after seeing the movie, just what scene Bay is now referring to as 'the fans are gonna love this'

Wasn't even thinking of their alt modes....DOH!!!!!!!!!!!
