 | | | | | | | Revenge of the Fallen: Worst-reviewed $400 million hit ever | | Posted on 06-29-2009 at 02:36 PM by Super_Megatron | After just five days, "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" is halfway to $400 million domestically, a box-office milestone only eight other movies have reached. If it climbs that high, the "Transformers" sequel will be by far the worst-reviewed movie ever to make the $400 million club. Critics and mainstream crowds often disagree, but "Revenge of the Fallen" sets a new standard for the gulf between what reviewers and mass audiences like.
According to Paramount's exit polls, 91 percent of the audience thought the sequel was as good as or better than the first "Transformers," which received far better reviews.
Most of Hollywood's all-time biggest hits are accompanied by either good or at least passable reviews, and some can be among the year's most-acclaimed, such as this year's "Up" and "Star Trek" and last year's "The Dark Knight," "WALL-E" and "Iron Man."
Not so for the new "Transformers." On Rottentomatoes.com, a Web site that compiles critics' opinions, the sequel had only 38 positive reviews out of 187, a lowly 20 percent rating usually reserved for box-office duds.

i hated the twins...they were annoying and too much in yo' face antics..but i do not see any racism.. i think most people are just uncomfortable with such depictions of character. that personality type (hip-hop, street gansta) is rampant in our society: i see it in whites, blacks, asians...take your pick, it is everywhere.
Sideswipe and Sunstreaker would have been a better choice (red sideswipe that is). Damn you ehren kruger. ..
misterd:
For people saying the Twins weren't black, but like white Wannabe's... what exactly do the white kids "wannabe"? Why is it I've never heard of a black "wannabe"? And does it have anything to do with the fact that the wannabes are also called "wiggers"? All of which would seem to point to the fact that the "gangsta" behavior, like it or not, is associated with a specific, non-white ethnic group. So please, whether you found it offensive or not, stop trying to pretend it was anything other than a racial stereotype.
lars18th:
When the behaviour is as widespread through all races as it is today, you can no longer take it as racist. Most teenagers talk like that amongst themselves nowadays but if you are a parent or out of touch with contemporary youth you might indeed stereotype and think only black people or black wannabes behave like that.
Trust me though, assuming that type of behavior is a characteristic of black community alone is, in my point of view, pretty freaking racist of you and whoever else got offended.

I think people who are trying to figure out if some bots are black or white have serious mental issues.

Face it, saying anybody acting like a race is racist in itself. Because you automatically apply these stereotypes to groups of people as if the are all the same.
There are white people who "wannabe" black and visa versa.
But, what do you call a white person raised around a "Black" community.
More than likely they'll adopt the characteristics of their neighborhood, which is predominantly Black.
Are they wannabe's.
Misterd you are racist because you obviously think me and other black folks have gold teeth and talk like gangsters.
Really, it seems only gangsters are black people, since stereotyping gangsters always leads to people crying RACIST against blacks. . .

Orci: Number one, we sympathize. Yes, the gold tooth was not in the script, that’s true.
Kurtzman: It’s really hard for us to sit here and try to justify it.I think that would be very foolish, and if someone wants to be offended by it, it’s their right. We were very surprised when we saw it, too, and it’s a choice that was made. If anything, it just shows you that we don’t control every aspect of the movie.
Cole: Were you offended by them?
Kurtzman: I wasn’t thrilled. I certainly wasn’t thrilled.
Orci: Yeah, same reaction. I’m not easily offended, but when I saw it, I thought, ‘Someone’s gonna write about that.’” | "Son", huh? Name calling on these boards won't get you far, my friend.
Although I will thank you for posting a link to the article. However, all it tells me is that the gold tooth was not their idea. It does not, however, say they thought they were racist sterotypes. Merely that they thought others might call attention to them.
In fact, I didn't get any impression from those precious few quotes that they intentionally tried to create sterotypical or racist characters. But that's been one of the arguments - that the writers' intent was plainly evident in the film.
Also, why didn't that interviewer follow up with a question about what aspects of the twins actually were in the script and made it on screen? I'm sure if he had asked, then we would have known exactly how they intended the twins to be portrayed and what effect Bay and the voice actors had on the twins. Because the voice actors can influence the script just as much as the director or writers can.
Regardless, it is apparent that neither of us are going to change our opinions. Might as well agree to disagree and leave it at that. Quote:

So please, whether you found it offensive or not, stop trying to pretend it was anything other than a racial stereotype. | I think terms like 'wigger' and the automatic association of 'gangsta' behaviour (I refuse to call it hip-hop, hip-hop deserves better than that) with black people to be far more offensive than anything the Twins said or did.
It seems like your logic is that since many people associate a negative stereotype with a certain ethnic group, that we should never use that stereotype as a comedic device, or even mention it at all and just hope it goes away.
My view is that if we really want to combat these stereotypes, we need to show them out in the open to show just how ridiculous and unrealistic they really are.
The stereotypes the Twins represent are so over the top, so divorced from reality that they can't possibly be taken seriously, and so we see how stupid it is to associate all black people with them. Or at lest, those of us with half a brain do.
Nobody is walking out of ROTF thinking "Yeah, I guess all black people really DO talk like that," and if they do, they're a goddamn idiot. Now if it's a young kid who might not know any better, its the parent's job to teach their kids right from wrong, not Michael Bay's.
And telling black people what they should be offended by as far as racism goes is pretty damn insulting if you ask me.
Oh, and one more thing to think about;
I teach English at a middle school in Korea and I have one student who is basically like one of the Twins; good-natured, not all that bright (or at least he acts really goofy), and LOVES to use hip-hop slang (it's actually almost the only English he can remember).
Now, is this kid a racist stereotype?

Is the racism conversation still going on? Give me a fucking break.
Here, I'll lay it all out for you.
Black people in the US suffered under really bad discrimination for a long time (and still suffer but not as overtly as in the past). They also had their culture completely taken away from them. Force a group of people...ANY group of people, I don't give a shit about color, into poverty and a cultural vacuum and you will always have some of them, desperate to escape the life that's been forced on them, find a way out. In this particular case, music was the out, and as many of the artists came from a background of ghetto life, drugs, crime, and violence (and also had no other culture because it was taken away from them, except for the rythmic style that was popularized in Africa and never eliminated), well...take a wild guess what their music is going to be about? Ghetto life, drugs, crime, and violence.
Then, add in consumerism and marketing, and the artists all start trying to one up each other, taking on more and more exaggerated personas to attract media attention and earn airtime on music tv. The "gangstah" is born. Unfortunately, as the target audience is the high-school set, those kids don't realize that all this posturing and talking ridiculous is an act designed to sell records. 50 Cent, Snoop, Eminem (oh look a WHITE guy. Told you it wasn't about race) can all give perfectly understandable, well thought out, normally worded interviews, and you can bet money that when they're not on the camera, that's how they talk.
So now we've got a bunch of young people of every race and gender, imitating these guys who are only acting that way to earn money. It's the mental equivalent of a bunch of 15 year old kids watching professional wrestling and deciding to walk around in speedos and smash people with chairs....because they saw the wrestlers (who are actors) doing it--And yet that's what is going on.
And you know what? It's funny to poke fun of them for doing that. And it's not remotely racist. The Twins are idiot kids with no real experience imitating something to try and act tough.
Wanna know something funny? The whole baggy clothes trend...you know where that came from? Why it became popular? Because rappers, many of whom used to be gang members or wished to APPEAR to be gang members, wore that kind of clothing in their videos. You know why gang members started wearing that stuff to begin with? Because it's easy to conceal a weapon in baggy clothes.
It's got nothing to do with race. If it were the whites who started out in this country as slaves and won their freedom and rights but had their culture largely forced out of them and poverty thrust on them....they'd be doing the exact same thing. Nothing to do with race, everything to do with poverty and a cultural vacuum.
So yeah. The Twins aren't racist. They're just idiot kids imitating something they don't understand...and everybody here knows plenty of people like that. Jazz wasn't racist either. He enjoys culture (because, while it started as a cultural vacuum, it has BECOME a culture now...though it is slowly shifting....20 years from now we're going to look back on it the same way we look back on the ridiculousness of the 80's styles) and has fun with it...but he turned deadly serious when he actually needed to get down to business.

It tickles me that this movie is still being so hotly debated 2 months after it's release. All the while it keeps bringing in the cash.
