 | | | | | | | Revenge of the Fallen Makes 201.2 million in 5 Days | | Posted on 06-29-2009 at 09:47 AM by Super_Megatron | "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" already ranks as the third-biggest movie of the year in North America, after earning $201.2 million since it blasted into theaters on Wednesday, distributor Paramount Pictures said on Sunday.
The haul handily beat industry expectations, and falls just short of the five-day opening record of $203.8 million set last year by "The Dark Knight," the second-biggest film of all time in North America before adjusting for inflation.
The biggest of the new markets was China, which chipped in $21.9 million, a record for an English-language film, the Viacom Inc (VIAb.N)-owned studio said. Other notable openings included South Korea ($14.9 million), Australia ($13 million) and Russia ($11.8 million). In those markets, the film surpassed its 2007 predecessor in local currency terms, Paramount said.
The first "Transformers" earned $708 million worldwide in 2007, the fifth-biggest film of the year. It ranked at No. 3 in North America with sales of $319 million. The new film should pass that tally next week, with business boosted by the July 4 Independence Day holiday in the United States.

good news. I saw a TV Spot last night where there were testimonials shown between quick scenes.

A few friends and family members who know just the basics of Transformers, have spoken with me, telling me they enjoyed it. To some they thought it could be a bit over the top, but to all, they enjoyed it.

Wander into the Movie forum here and its a real hate-fest most of the time (though to me it looks like the same posters over and over, running into every thread).
I've stopped going into the Movie forum. It just isn't fun to listen to the same folks attacking over and over ad nauseum something I like so much. I respect their right to their opinion and sure they didn't like it and that's fine and they can say so. But some of them seem focused on posting it over and over and over, thread after thread after thread. I think they're angry, and that's why. I can sort of understand, if I hadn't loved ROTF I'd maybe be angry too... but I like to think I'd let the people who did like it do so in a little peace.

The funny thing is, I found this review on Youtube where she actually went out and spoke with people who SAW the movie, and you know, not a single TF shirt to be had. YouTube - Transformers 2 Movie Review: Beyond The Trailer
And you know, it kind of backs up Paramount's 90%+ liking it version

This is great news! I loved it and I saw it twice already! I don't care if it beats the Dark knight, which by the way I hated. It was WAY to serious and dark for batman to me. I don't understand all the praise for THAT movie at all. I felt it ruined Batman for me. I much prefer the 1st two Michael Keaton movies over Begins and Dark Knight.
protostar8:
The Dark Knight was a million times better than TF2, which was kinda garbage if you step back and look at it without getting caught up in the "wow the graphics are awesome" bubble. (Not meaning any offense to anyone with that comment)
I'm more than happy that Dark Knight beat TF2 b/c it deserves the win.

Everyone was miserable all the freaking time... except joker who was good, but I just didn't get that whole "greatest acting performance evar!" thing with him. It was really good, no doubt, but the whole Joker is a laughing serial killer isn't groundbreaking. Again - Heath Ledger did great, the writing was good, etc - just the whole movie felt like a big downer; like the message was "Being Batman sucks hard". I guess it would in real life but... man... downer.
Rookbartley:
A couple of things. First of all, wow! Success like this means we all benefit, movie lovers or not. We get toys, we get merchandise, we get cartoons. Heck, at one point last year, I could buy Transformers in three different lines, movie, universe and animated. Do you think we would be at that level if the first movie didn't come out? I remember the dark days of never even being able to find a Transformers t-shirt! So here's what you need to keep in perspective. This movie, like it or not, has raised awareness to a whole new level. That means we as fans, whether it be of the toys, comics, cartoons, whatever, get new product! A steady product. And damn it, it's cool to be a Transformers fan. I get so many compliments on my tattoo it's not even funny. So lets enjoy this moment and even if you didn't enjoy the movie, sit back and think about all the good this will bring.
After multiple viewings, damn, I loved the Shanghai battle. That's what Transformers is all about. Win, win win!!!
I'll admit, I'm not a huge fan of the Dark Knight. Went to see it as I usually go see Batman movies and was like "eh". I thought Heath Ledger was "eh". And I know saying that is blasphemous as he became a great actor after dying of his drug overdose, but the psychotic, laughing madman is a pretty damn easy character to play. This is how a typical conversation goes when talking to a "Dark Knight" fan. "So you liked the movie?" "Loved it." "What did you love?" "Heath Ledger!" So take the whole "Heath Ledger died' factor out of the equation and do we have Batman raking in quite as much money as it did? The answer is no. "Dark Knight" was going to be a successful movie, but it got quite a bit of a bump when Ledger passed away. And since there is no Ledger in Batman 3, but everyone else will remain the same, both in front of and behind the camera, we'll see how well it does. Expect a huge drop off...I'm talking huge.
So lets enjoy the fact that we are in the golden age of Transformers. I've been there since the beginning and this is the best it's ever been. And for those who don't like the movie, realize that the success of the movie keeps toys on the shelves and gives us cool things like Transformers Animated. Trust me, we're much better off than Masters of the Universe. We could have ended up like that.
Chaos Muffin:
Yay we're #1!! after the 2 other guys blackout501st:
DAM!!! that is impressive. i hope that if they re tally everything, it ends up beating the dark knight. and in my mind, the reason this film is making so much money is because people dont give a flying fuck what the critics say, if thet think the film looks good, they will go and see it regardless if it gets bad reviews. so, if it dose surpass dark knight, maby that will finally shut the dam critics up and maby they will give it some respect.
Magnimus:
Well, call me a fandom traitor, but I hoped this movie would not do this well. It doesn't deserve to and reward Bay and all involved but ILM for producing a movie that insults the intelligence of its audience.
It'll give them license to make a bigger, cruder, and stupider sequel. Humping Testicle Robots 3: Revenge of the Explosion JDF: Quote:

and it can only go up, which it most definitely will. Revenge of the Fallen was good, but not The Dark Knight good:/ If The Dark Knight manages to hold on to its title, I wouldn't be surprised. Transformers' eye-popping action is what makes this movie a fun one to watch--not so much the story.

The beginning was a joke too, you're telling me that nobody could notice a huge yellow bus sticking out of a bank? when it pulled away everyone on the sidewalk was just walking along and didn't even notice a bus crashed in a bank.

But look at TF2, the movie is a gigantic plot hole with multiple plot holes within it. The reason the dark knight was so good b/c it very much captured the feel of Batman in terms of style and the script was amazing. The movie didn't rely on million dollar high end graphics to woo the audience, it did it with the story and the acting. I'm a much bigger TF fan than Batman, but the Batman movie kicks the s*** out of Bay's abomination. For anyone that says the Batman movie was too "dark" for them, it's Batman....that's kind of what Batman is about. Not some goofy ass stuff like the old Live Action TV show...

Why does everyone think Transformers needs the story of Lord of the Rings? As a HUGE fan of TF, I can honestly say that no TF series EVER (US or JAP) has had a deep plot. Its always been a flash bang toy commercial that runs for 22 minutes. It appeals to certain people. The comics are much more involved, but thats what they are. COMICS.
A reimagining of the Transformers cant fit years worth of mythos into 2 hours. You cant expect some huge deep plot out of a 2 hour movie that didnt know if it was going to get a sequel. It would be nothing but narration and no action, which is what TF really is all about in the end, Autobots vs Decepticons in a civil war.
Be lucky the 2nd movie had more character interaction between the bots than the first. At least we got some sort of scraps and progression vs the last movie.
I mean god, the original movie actually had LESS PLOT than ROTF. Go back and look at it seriously, Unicron attacks, we dont know why or who he is, and prime dies and craps out the matrix. Thats all that happens. It was nothing more than a transition to the new line of toys. It was great but its because so many of us know the huge backstory. ROTF isnt designed for us its designed as a fun movie and it pulls it off.

Most of the bad word of mouth is the critics bad mouthing of the film but honestly its not working. Critics hate seeing scifi esque or action movies pull in the impressive numbers. Honestly this film is great it keeps you in the movie the whole time whichi s a plus. Lines have been crazy the past 5 days very eager to see it again at somepoint this week. I deff think the film will break the dark knights numbers by the end of the day.
Just goes to show ya critcs dont know shit about what there talking about!!
Rookbartley:
The critics only like movies with Benicio Del Toro in them.

I'm not saying G1 had an impressive storyline on an episode basis (overall arc = decent and good bit of backstory). However, the most major fault I find is what you call "reimagining". The one and only movie franchise that's live action shouldn't take such huge liberties with the property. Hell, the franchise has made it this long on the fundamentals (which do include style/look) and the movie totally disregarded some of the key concepts. If the characters weren't named after Hasbro's original cast, then I HIGHLY doubt anyone would look at a design like Ironhide and go "man, he looks just like what I'd imagine Ironhide looking like". The designs are largely unrecognizable as their namesakes and there is really no excuse for that...

It would have been nice, to include similar color schemes at least on the bots if they wanted to go all stylistic on their mecha designs. I could have dealt with IronHide being red and a big more of an SUV choice, or Jazz white, with a racing stripe true to the old version, and having both of their bodies be all skewed because you could at least discern something familiar.
I have however come to just drop that subject as its not going to change. I mean look at some of the animated stuff. Animated Prowl is NOTHING like G1 prowl, id not know who he was either unless someone told me his name. And I was angry about that as well but again eventually you just accept it as long as its not too out there.
Each Animated series has had the same kind of take on characters dear to us, its just a shame to see so large of a percentage of unreckognizable bots in the live action movies. But these new versions have come to grow on me, some of them anyways.

Opening Wednesday means that the uberfans, like most of the people on this board, go see it Wednesday and Thursday. That leaves more seats for the casual fans on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. TF fans want to see Transformers, and will wait for the next show if the current one is sold out, or get tickets for the next day.. Casual fans won't necessarily do that, and either go see something else (seriously- we had a show of 'Year One' sell out because people couldn't get into TF), or go home. The Wednesday release makes the studio more money overall. I personally think that Thursday is a better release day for 'event' movies, but Wednesdays do OK, too. Ice Age 3, Public Enemies, and Harry Potter are all releasing on Wednesday this month as well.
