 | | | | | | | Revenge of the Fallen Makes 201.2 million in 5 Days | | Posted on 06-29-2009 at 09:47 AM by Super_Megatron | "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" already ranks as the third-biggest movie of the year in North America, after earning $201.2 million since it blasted into theaters on Wednesday, distributor Paramount Pictures said on Sunday.
The haul handily beat industry expectations, and falls just short of the five-day opening record of $203.8 million set last year by "The Dark Knight," the second-biggest film of all time in North America before adjusting for inflation.
The biggest of the new markets was China, which chipped in $21.9 million, a record for an English-language film, the Viacom Inc (VIAb.N)-owned studio said. Other notable openings included South Korea ($14.9 million), Australia ($13 million) and Russia ($11.8 million). In those markets, the film surpassed its 2007 predecessor in local currency terms, Paramount said.
The first "Transformers" earned $708 million worldwide in 2007, the fifth-biggest film of the year. It ranked at No. 3 in North America with sales of $319 million. The new film should pass that tally next week, with business boosted by the July 4 Independence Day holiday in the United States.

* Transformers sequel earns $201 million in first 5 days * Narrowly misses five-day record held by "Dark Knight"
(Updates with studio quotes, other films)
LOS ANGELES, June 28 (Reuters) - The "Transformers" sequel quickly became the third-biggest movie of the year at the North American box office after just five days of release, as the costly robot extravaganza surpassed industry expectations.
"Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen," a follow-up to the smash hit of 2007, earned an estimated $201.2 million since it blasted into theaters on Wednesday, distributor Paramount Pictures said on Sunday.
Earlier in the week, the Viacom Inc (VIAb.N)-owned studio had conservatively forecast a five-day haul in the $130 million to $150 million range. But industry pundits said a tally of at least $175 million was more likely.
"For me the high water mark was, could you get to $200 million in seven days?" said Don Harris, executive vice-president of distribution at Paramount, adding that his target was met with skepticism by movie-theater owners.
The biggest movies of the year so far are "Up" with $250 million and "Star Trek" with $246 million. The new "Transformers" movie is on track to hit the low $300 million area by the end of next weekend, Paramount said.
"We should have three really strong weeks before 'Harry Potter (and the Half-Blood Prince)' comes in (on July 15)," Harris said.
PIPPED BY "DARK KNIGHT"
The film narrowly missed the five-day opening record of $203.8 million set last year by "The Dark Knight," the second-biggest film of all time before adjusting for inflation. Its $60.6 million haul on its first day also fell just short of the all-time single-day record of $67 million, set on a Friday by the Batman sequel.
Harris said women accounted for 46 percent of moviegoers, up from 40 percent for the first movie, an indication of the franchise's expanding appeal.
Exit surveys indicated that 91 percent of moviegoers considered the film as good as or better than the first one, Harris said. Critics, on the other hand, were mildly favorable towards the first film, but mostly appalled by the sequel, according to Rotten Tomatoes (ROTTEN TOMATOES: Movies - New Movie Reviews and Previews!), a Web site that analyzes reviews.
The first "Transformers" was the third-biggest film of 2007 in North America, ending up with $319 million. It opened on the Monday before the July 4 holiday, so comparisons are difficult. They have plenty in common though: director Michael Bay reunites with young stars Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox. Robots rampage across the landscape, and things explode. The sequel reportedly cost about $200 million to make.
"Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" also opened internationally on Wednesday, but got an early start last weekend with a No. 1 bow in Britain and No. 2 in Japan behind a local release. Data for the current weekend were not immediately available.
The film's domestic haul includes $14.4 million from Imax Corp (IMX.TO) (IMAX.O) giant screens. "That used to be a good month for us," said Greg Foster, Imax's president of filmed entertainment.
The movie's $112 million tally for the traditional three-day period beginning Friday easily eclipsed the combined tallies of the rest of the movies in the top 10. Last weekend's champion, "The Proposal," slipped to No. 2 with $18.5 million. Walt Disney Co's (DIS.N) Sandra Bullock romance has earned $69 million after 10 days.

these are early estimatees, sometimes they just adjust the total the next day by 1 million or less
DAYAM! I was hoping it would beat Dark Knight and set a new record
Acid Wing:
I'm praying by tomorrow morning, it makes the extra $2 million than the projected figure just to top TDK. Though, will still be happy with the current mind-blowing amount. Never really expected it, despite how badly panned it was compared to the first film.
My bro' just saw the Hangover this afternoon and mentioned that there were lines waiting for ROTF. So, here's hoping. darthrage: Quote:

it is possible that the death of michael Jackson had impact on the numbers. It may have decreased the amount of people seeing the movie.

im not suprised that the number of women attending increased; after the first alot of my female friends were just blown away from it. they loved Shia and those that had children loved it too.

Haloid1177:
They usually do miscalculate by 2 to 3 million, so I hope that we get enough to beat TDK record.
It would be so awesome for critics to see that a movie they thought was horrible could beat a movie they thought was great.
03Mach1:
It's a shame there is no way to proove that 91% positive exit polling. It would put an end to the 'negative word of mouth' argument going around. 9% not liking the film is hardly negative.

Regardless, this is still a huge deal.

it would be directly opposite seeing how the die hard fan are hugely negative in this regard, see this forum for example.
Devastator001:
According to: Box Office Mojo
The movie has broke the $200 million mark in the first five day opening. It is third behind Up and Star Trek for the top grossing flick of this year. If there are a continuation of these strong numbers in the next week or two, perhaps the flick will be the top dog of the year.

The exiting polls are conducted at random. I know, because I've helped conduct a few before. So it has nothing to do with fans.
A buddy of mine works at a local theater, and has told me that the film has been doing a fine job of entertaining all of the crowds that have been in there.
Bottom Out:
holy shit lol, this movie is killing it, its allready made its money back as well as some profit, wow, just wow
Waverider:
The weekend is not over yet. Monday is when we get the hard numbers. ROTF will be top dog by next week.
vincheng2k5:
Impressive. I'm happy for Transformers but hope this doesn't give Hasbro and everyone involved to get sloppy with the franchise. I mean, have you SEEN the ROTF Arcee figure? Why is this being rushed to production when the Animated Arcee is barely making it to circulation in 2010?

Yayyyyyyyyyy for transformers but really do we need 5 diffrent threads for this?? Come on ppl read atleast the first page of topics because its been up there all week long on how much this has been making..

Anyways, that's amazing about RotF. I'll be interested to see how Hasbro tries to capitalize on this (besides the coinciding movie merchandise).

$201,246,000!!! As reported this morning on yahoo.com. Stick this in your tailpipes critics!!!
Update Hollywood Reporter list $363 million total worldwide!!!
'Transformers' tops $200 million
"Paramount's action sequel "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" capped its dramatic debut with a vengeance, ringing up $112 million in estimated weekend boxoffice for a competition-crunching domestic cume of $201.2 million since storming theaters Wednesday.
Matched against the first five days of all previous film releases, the "Transformers" tally falls below only that of last summer's "The Dark Knight," which debuted with $203.8 million during a Friday-to-Tuesday span. With another $181.6 million coming from overseas, the global gross for the second "Transformers" now stands at $363.2 million.
Produced by Paramount, DreamWorks and Hasbro, "Transformers" hauled in at least $25 million more through Sunday than most had anticipated."

Paramount's national exit polling revealed several notable facts. While the first "Transformers" film, released in 2007, skewed 60-40 toward men over women, the split in the new film was more even at 54% male, 46% female. More than 90% of those surveyed said the new movie was as good as or better than the first film. About 67% of moviegoers polled said the film was "excellent," an even better score than that generated by Paramount's "Star Trek," one of the year's best-reviewed movies. | http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/news/la-et-bay29-2009jun29,0,6806652.story

Congrats Bay et All. It was a great film, and deserving of this all. I've gone and seen it 3 times already, with a 4th planned with my parents. Worth every penny!

GOOD GOD. O_O
What I fail to understand is how such a film can earn so much (in such a quick time), since the majority of the people believe:
- the film lacks story
- lacks character
- has horrible jokes and humor
- film being torn apart by critics
- Word of mouth seems to be quite negative as well
- stereotypical michael bay bashing
^ Just an observation. This does not reflect my views on the film.
From the looks of it... Titanic might sink from #1 domestic spot after being hit by a descending protoform...

Damn. Was hoping it would beat Dark Knight so I can rub it in a coworkers face. Oh well, Dark Knight is a badass flick and hard to beat. Great news for TF2! I can't wait to see it again
SMS55:
Whether it beats Dark Knight or not I guess doesn't really matter. This just tells the critics of the movie they can stuff it. People loved it, and this all but gaurantees a third movie to the franchise. In the end that's what's important. We are getting a third film.
Goaliebot:
WOOOOHOOOO! SCOREBOARD, BIATCHES!
Let pre-producion on TF3 begin!
Tell_Story:
Don't get me wrong. I'm happy the movie is having such great success and with that said I don't know how you guys can scoff at those of us who think this movie isn't that great. Transformers are great in themselves. Making it into a movie has great appeal and I think the design and they way they've been worked onto the big screen is pretty decent. So guess what on that appeal alone it has made a lot of money, but the movie still stinks. It may not stink as bad as some other movies, but it's certainly not as good as something like the Dark Knight.
What is the big difference. I think its maturity. Michael Bay is utterly infantile in his humor and it makes a good bit of the audience and critics react. Will we still watch it? Yeah sure, we love Transformers, but that doesn't change our opinion over the movie.
Making $201 million is not a trump card to the critics or a sign that the movie is good. People are going out to see it and it has much more to do with whether it is actually good or not.

We are getting a third film. | All summer "event" movies have a big opening weekend, you get a feel for how much staying power it has by looking at the second weekend numbers to see how low the percentages dropped (granted, this will come with an asterisk since it's July 4th weekend).
Spiderman 3 opened big too, and for the most part it was seen by critics and fans alike as a POS. That's why it started to take a nosedive from the second weekend onward.

Many films are ripped by critics but received well by the public. Most people when they go see a movie want to be entertained. I don't think they care for a deep story, or a Shakespeare type plot. I for one want to sit back and be entertained. I love special effects, action, explosions. If I want intellectual stimulation I'll read a book.
I don't think the story is as bad as some would argue. The story plays out like any G-1 cartoon. The Decepticons are trying to strip the planet of energon to return to Cybertron, and the Autobots are trying to stop them. Word of mouth isn't bad. I report on this very web page aid that 91% of people coming out of the movie said they liked it.
Well Michael Bay is always going to get bashed because he loves blowing stuff up, and doesn't devote more time to plot, and character. He's fine with that. This is the type of movie he likes to make.
Sideswipe1954:
I am confused. I have seen it in this thread as well as others, but how is there negative word of mouth, outside of the critics. Yes, some people did not like and have said so, but if Paramount is polling 90%+ liking it, where is this major negative word of mouth that is hurting it?
What About Bob?:
A lot of it has to do with return business. Most are going to see it again too..can't be all that bad.
