 | | | Revenge of the Fallen Breaks Chinese Box Office Records | | Posted on 07-13-2009 at 01:09 PM by Sol Fury | 2005 Boards member S250 reports that Transformers Revenge of the Fallen has sank Titanic's box office record in China. Titanic was formerly the highest grossing film at the Chinese box office, but Revenge of the Fallen has now taken in around $60 Million in China alone, breaking Titanic's record. This comes in spite of Chinese objections to the depiction of Shanghai in the opening scenes of the film.
Domestically too Revenge of the Fallen continues to perform well, taking in an estimated total of $339,208,000 at the US Box office in its third weekend, bringing the domestic total to $20 million more than the domestic takings for the first movie, although the overall total still stands at around $30 million behind the first movie's all time total gross. These figures come courtesy of Box Office Mojo.

ROTF already made about 60 million $ box office in China, and break the record made by Titanic 12 years ago.
omegagoalie:
Very cool news!
Nachtsider:
So much for China allegedly regarding ROTF's depiction of Shanghai as offensive. Maximus_Prime:
S250 news that is NOT toy related!?
This is great news though, thanks for letting us know!
guard convoy:

ANY depiction of China not controlled in every way by their own ministry would be considered offensive. I'm amazed the movie was permitted to play there at all.
I wonder what specifically was the complaint about this film?
1govnor1:
Considering that the majority of the citizens over there don't go to movie on a regular basis, this is surprising news.
Z.U.D.O.N:
Holy..! 60 million!? Whoa..

Snazz-tasic!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wonder what specifically was the complaint about this film? | i was wondering that too ~ that scene is pretty limited in it's scope as far as showing you much of anything or really giving you the sense of where it was.

thats the only part that seemed out of place to me....
Randy!
scourge88: Awesome!
Sprocket:
Any offense they might have taken was completely nullified by China's slavish love of anything related to giant robots, for they love giant robots more than any other country in the world by a wide margin, even Japan.
Although the Philippines might come close.

WE ARE INDESTRUCTIBLE- POWER TO THE TRANSFORMERS FANS FOREVER!
Sorry I couldn't resist the reference Blackout Pave Low:
I'm glad that it broke the record in China over that sorry Titanic. Revenge of the Fallen superior... Titanic inferior! Well, at least in China!
Sol Fury:
Says something for the opinion of critics when a film most of them panned smashes a 12 year record held by a film they by and large praised.
Nevermore:
Well, I still think at least some of the critics' opinions are valid. Don't get me wrong, I liked ROTF, albeit not quite as much as I liked the first one. Doesn't mean I think it was objectively a good movie.
Still, a fun flick. Roller:
Speaking of critics, which we all know how they have rated the movie in the US and other english speaking countries. But how have critics rated the film in non-english speaking (first language) countries? Because the worldwide gross doubles sometimes triples that of the US gross, the worldwide gross I think is the best measure of how popular the movie is for this year.
Also of note, TF ROTF is now the 100th highest grossing film of all time in the US after adjusting for inflation according to BoxOfficeMojo. To me, that is the best measure available of saying how popular a film is of all time. Maybe it's not necessarilly a measure of "how good" the movie is as it probably won't ever be on the AFI top 100, but come on, do extremely boring movies like "Citizen Kane" (which I 'get', but it's still boring to me) really deserve to be on there either?
Repainted:
The numbers just kick more filth in the face of critics and I couldn't be happier. TF2 broke $700 million worldwide and will inevitably pass the previous TF film's total theatrical earnings. That, after passing the 2007 film's previous domestic earnings, all of this in under a month. I know TF2 will only trail off with that Bruno nonsense kicking in (honestly, I don't see anything to it), Potter's next installment and G.I. Joe's movie on the horizon. At this point, a billion dollars is very possible, although been achieved in combination with the 2007 Transformers (over $1.4 billion combined).
Edit: Forgot to mention, that TF2 is now showing on more screens now than when it was released at just under 4300 theatres.
03Mach1:
Keep on moving that needle.
Macross7:
Did it just come out in China or has it been playing there for weeks? Anyone else not finding $60M in a country of over a BILLION people all that impressive? Even if not many go to movies, seems other movies would have gotten $60M besides just ROTF & Titanic. What do their tickets cost in US dollars?
TIE Bomber:
ROTF is about to break my personal record. I saw the 86 & 07 movies 4 times each in the theater. Tomorrow night I'm going to the drive-in to see it for the 5th time. I haven't been to a drive-in since I was little. I'm excited as hell. Gonna crank the shit out of it. Bring on the forest battle!!!!
Protoman:
Damn right. Screw you Titanic.
blackout501st:
awesome. 400 mil in no time.

frilly toothpick:
great news. S250:
about the ticket price, much different in different time and different city.for example, the June 23 24:00 Beijing ticket price is about 100RMB(about 14$),but other time some smaller city only 3-4$.And there are lot of member discount events......
And
anyone who knows Bay/Kurtzman or Orci in person, tell them next time don't put any sensitive element in the movie............this time they almost lost the chance

About several hundred million of China's population live in poverty. Ticket prices in China could equal half a day's wages or more for a factory worker, and this is even with discounts offered by the theater.
China's movie theaters have to compete with a very sophisticated pirate movie market that's practically all over the country. People in China tend to go for the pirated video because it's cheaper, so Revenge of the Fallen making even $30 million in China would be a very big deal.

Standard complaints are "stupid action movie", "blatant car advertising for General Motors", "blatant US Army recruitment film", "glorification of war" and "neglection of human characters/humanization of robots".
In terms of ticket sales, the first movie was a medium success here - no real smash hit, but also far from being considered a failure. ROTF appears to be faring somewhat better.

all there needs to be now is a pic of i dunno... tidalwave (as the titanic) bieng told off by soundwave with the "superior" "inferior" joke

I wonder what specifically was the complaint about this film? | It makes them look bad for harboring interplanetary terrorists.
Fit For natalie:
I'm pretty sure, story-wise, the Chinese were the ones who alerted NEST about Demolishor and Sideways. Lennox says the Chinese government provided a cover story that the operation was about a toxic spill.
The real Chinese government probably objected to the very notion of foreigners having to bail them out.

I wonder if a Gundam or Macross/Robotech movie would perform even better?
