Michael Bay Talks Transformers 4 Plot, Mark Wahlberg And Shia
"It's an absolutely brilliant move," MTV Geek editor Valerie Gallaher tells MTV News of Wahlberg's casting. "It'll keep this franchise fresh."
"The guy can act - as anyone who has seen 'Boogie Nights' or 'The Departed' can attest to," agrees Brian Truitt with USA Today. "And he brings sort of an exasperated 'Come on, alien robots, are you kidding me?!' vibe that would make for a great and different dynamic."
Meanwhile TMZ contacted the director via phone. Find out what Mr. Bay had to say about Transformers 4 Plot, Mark Wahlberg's Character And Shia's Comments, after the jump.

TMZ: So big huge news in Hollywood today. The Transformers Franchise will go on and instead of Shia Labeouf, they have landed Mark Wahlberg for the lead role in this. Which is just awesome… everybody loves Wahlberg. Perfect fit for this. And what was real interesting about this… we were talking about this in the news room, and we remember Shia Labeouf came out and said some things about the franchise that he felt like he didn’t have enough creative freedom in this. Well, now you are… gone. And Mark Wahlber is in this. It feels like Director Michael Bay really won that one. And what’s really great is we were able to get Michael Bay on the phone to talk to us about this today. Michael, How you doing?
Michael: Hey guys, how are you?
TMZ: Not as good as you. We don’t have Mark Wahlberg. Can you send him over to host our show one day, when Harvey’s gone?
Michael: He’s a fun guy. Just finished working with him on Pain & Gain, a crime story that we finished in Miami.
TMZ: So tell us, how did this deal get put together and how did you score Wahlberg for the Transformers Franchise?
Michael: I don’t know… just something we thought about a bit. You saw the whole Internet Rumor that he was on. And that wasn’t really true. And we were in the inception part of the story. And just talking with Stephen Spielberg. And that was a great way to really take this franchise in a different direction. We’re doing a lot of things that are going to really make it feel fresh and new. And he’s an actor, he has accomplished, he’s an Academy Award Nominee and I love working with him and he’s got a great sense of comedy and great pathos. He’s a guy who can handle great action. And he never had a huge franchise. So this is something that really appealed to him. He said “I really want to show a movie to my kids”. You know? It kinda happened.
TMZ: So Michael, let’s talk about the fact that… you know.. you had couple of your Transformers Stars… you know… have some not-so-kind-things to say.
Michael: Listen guys, you got to understand, fame is very hard on young people. It’s… I kind of helped raise Shia for three movies. And it’s… it’s really tough. Fame is a very rough thing. And you know Shia LaBeouf is a great, great guy. He’s a great actor. And I have nothing but respect for him.
TMZ: Did you take offense or did it hurt when he said…
Michael: No, No.
TMZ: …His comment about not enough creativity doing these big blockbusters?
Michael: What he’s saying is he wants to be taken seriously. And sometimes when you’re in a blockbuster, people don’t take you seriously. You know? I think that’s what he’s really saying. He’s going through more of a smaller role.
TMZ: He’s in his Art House Stage now.
Michael: You know… listen… he’s only 26.
TMZ: So he will be back?
Michael: He will be back.
TMZ: So, any early idea of what the story is going to be on Transformers and how Mark... He’s not taking over Shia’s role?
Michael: No no. The movie will continue four years from the Attack on Chicago; which is in the last movie. So it’s going to still have the same lineage. And it’s going a full new direction and feels very natural how it’s going in that direction, there is no way you’re going to ever find out what the story because you don’t have to dig through my trash but I shredded my trash…

I think Bay only really blows up on someone who he doesn't respect and/or feels they are talking out the side of their mouth (or the back of their @$$ for that matter).

This interview gives me nothing beyond praise for what Shia's done, and what Mark's going to do. And maybe some suggestive comments involving the Rock and oil.
I wished there was more on the film itself and its story, that's all. Still keeping my fingers crossed for more updates though.

I think Mark is an excellent addition to the franchise, I was getting tired of the Sam character. He got too amp'd up too easily and the rapid fire mumbling was getting old.
Time for a more mature character (hopefully, as Wahlberg can play pretty much any age) and a new direction. Four years sounds good, time for a new cast!! And a new threat to deal with as pretty much all of the 'cons from 3 are dead.
Mark should also make it easier to get a good female lead for a change???

Actually I was thinking more along the lines of someone ages 19-21. But then again, I would have dropped out of school in a heartbeat to make a cool million in a major motion picture. Im sure my parents would have concured. Ill have plenty of time to attend night school later on, with a fat bank account.

1.) Nowhere has it been confirmed - or even hinted at - that Mark will be playing the "teenage boy" character.
2.) Looking at "teenagers" in film or television, it's apparent that, for the most part, getting a teenager who is actually the required age isn't the best choice. Getting a 16 year old kid to play a 16 year old kid makes them look really young. Crime shows, teenage dramas, blockbuster movies, whatever. You'll notice that they seem to cast older actors to play younger characters. A 15 year old actor will play the 11 year old child murderer, the 21 year old Shia plays an eleventh grader, the majority of the Glee cast is/was 20-25 and they were playing high-schoolers. That's just how casting teenage characters works. Heck, it seems to almost apply in real life too; Carly Rae Jepsen is 26 years old and yet she looks like an 18 year old. I'm 21 years old, but if I were cast in anything, I'm sure I'd be the "16 year old friend" because I look like an awkward man-child.
I wouldn't make a convincing young adult, but I'd make one heck of a generic high schooler. Actual teenagers appear to be younger than they actually are when the camera sees them. It's not always the case, but the majority of the time it is.

All Im saying is that the traditional Bumblebee human sidekick is a teenage boy. I dont see any shortage of young teenage boys in the USA that they need to use somebody that was 18 like in 1989. Maybe middle america respects Mark Wahlberg as an actor. But here in Miami he will always be Marky Mark, the Vanilla Ice spin-off known for his song "Good Vibrations" in the early 90's. Wreckers=Funky Bunch. Also, Peter Cullen should go on a wild rant of complaints and insults just to see if Michael Bay would be so foolish and replace him. I'm thinking William Daniels (KITT and Mr. Feeney). I didn't bother to read the whole thing but in general Bay really needs to stop freaking out when someone says anything negative. He can just say: "Whaat?? I couldn't hear your opinion from way up here on this mountain of cash my movies made!!!" He needs to relax...or stop avoiding the inevitable and start blowing people up that defy him. Oh, like he doesn't skim explosive materials from his sets here and there while filming his movies. Yes Mark Wahlberg can act if he has the right director and writer supporting him. But Mark Wahlberg isn't one of those actors who can carry a film on acting talent alone so wrong director and wrong writer can produce a Mark Wahlberg stinker.

...made it seem like it had been confirmed that Mark was going to be playing the proposed "teenage boy" role. Which it hasn't. We know so little about the casting of this movie - and the movie itself in general - that the casting of Mark as somebody is pretty much the only concrete news we have. Nothing has said that Mark is playing the role of the young teen. We don't know who he'll be playing. He could be an older Sam, he could be Sam's son in the future, he could be someone completely unrelated to Sam, he could be the new main soldier character, he could be someone in a cameo/minor role a la Rainn Wilson/Bernie Mac/John Malkovich, who knows? We don't know anything about his role.
A knee-jerk reaction about Mark's casting here after news of a "teenage boy"-role is like getting up in arms back in 2007 with this example: Imagine if we had been told that this new Transformers movie coming out in 2007 was going to be about "a high-school boy and how his life is turned upside-down when the Transformers arrive". And then the next bit of news was that Jon Voight had been cast in the movie in an unspecified role. Would anyone really make a connection that "teenage boy is main character" and "Jon Voight is cast" would be related to each other? Probably no one, because it didn't say that Jon Voight would be playing the teenage boy role. This Mark-situation is no different. We know some teenage roles are involved. We know Mark has been cast. Nothing has been said about if those two bits of news are connected. That's what I'm getting at.

Shia is an ungrateful little tool. He should be grateful to have been part of not one, but THREE blockbuster movies that made him sickeningly wealthy (not incuding Indiana Jones 4). Quite frankly, I couldn't care less. The Movie Transfranchise is for the mainstream audience, geared to rake in cash. Anyone else remember when we stuck by the brand when it was not mainstream and now "cool"? That's a very apt way to describe it, webz. Quite honestly, I'm surprised they didn't. I thought for sure Hollywood would, given their penchant for that kind of thing. Personally, Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy didn't need to be rebooted, but they did it anyway. The Punisher (2004) didn't need to be rebooted, but they did it anyway. And given the relative financial/critical success of films like Hulk, Van Helsing, RoboCop, Total Recall, The Mummy, etc. that were/are going to be rebooted/remade, Bayformers seems like a similar candidate. There's just so many things that can be done differently (read: differently, not necessarily better or worse) with a reboot of our little robot toys. Plus, despite my enjoyment of Bayformers, I sort of see it as the Burton/Schumacher Batman movies and/or the Brosnan Bond films to their respective franchises. I would've thought that Bayformers would've been rebooted in 5-10 years time in a similar manner. But, what can you do... Granted, I'm in the small percentage of fans that'd be happy whether we got a fourth Bayformers or a reboot. I just want theatrical Transformers films, that's all.
