Mark Wahlberg Says They Are Completely Rebooting Transformers Live Action Movies

Posted on 01-17-2013 at 10:56 AM by SilverOptimus under Transformers Movie (Just Movie) (All Transformers Movie News)
Mark-Wahlberg-Transformers-4
Actor Mark Wahlberg appeared on Jay Leno's The Tonight Show and said few things about Transformers 4.

Were doing a complete reboot of the Transformers. I did a movie with Michael Bay called Pain and Gain, which comes out in April. And we had an amazing time together and really hit it off, and he said Hey, you want to do this other little movie Im doing? Because that was a little movie, and I said Yeah, I like doing little movies.' And he said Transformers. Whoa! You know what, we had such a great experience, Im in.

This statement conflicts with what the Director; Michael Bay told us not too long ago. However, the statement may also refer that they'll be going in a fresh direction rather than a reboot as the name implies.

The episode is now available online and 2005 Boards Member Albershide instructs us to skip to the 25th minute to hear what Mr. Wahlberg has to say.

Going by precedent, I'm expecting Bay to deny this before the day is out.

If it's a reboot, then why is it called "Transformes 4?"

You don't expect that the movie will end up called Transformers 4, right?

Mark Wahlberg is going to be on Jimmy Kimmel Live tonight. So, maybe he might hint a little more tonigh. As for this interview, it's pretty much nothing new. He probably said it was a reboot because they haven't really started any work with him do he might not know much.
Hot Shot.
...Because a complete reboot with the same director and crew makes sense.

Yeah, I don't think Wahlberg knows what he's talking about.
Josh
i think this is one of those times where "reboot" simply means "a fresh direction" not "EVERYTHING THAT CAME BEFORE DOESNT EXIST"

Something tells me he's misinformed. I seriously doubt it's going to be a complete reboot, especially with what we've already been told. But then there's always a chance. And I for one would welcome a reboot. But it'll still be BayFormers so it being a 'complete reboot' seems unlikely.
This is just Wahlberg getting the same vague description as us where even Bay himself doesn't know how to accurately describe what he's going to be doing. But 'complete reboot' sounds more exciting and enticing than 'more of the same, but slightly different' and we know how Hollywood loves to big-up new projects by suggesting they're going to be somehow fresh. This is almost non-news.

Bingo.
ANDROID PRIME
I don't think "reboot" is the right word. That would imply that it takes place in a different universe than the last 3 movies. What would be a better word to describe it?

As Josh said, a 'fresh direction'.
Transbot90210
Last week on a local Toronto radio station he said the same thing about it being a complete reboot. I never thought to post it but I hope the designs are completely rebooted.

Regarding the original trilogy, I could suffer the thin plots but those designs were really painful for me.

If it ain't broke don't fix it . I haven't been this concerned since i heard how bay felt about tf back in 06 continue or reboot going half assed scares me
MetalicGrunt
How could it be a reboot, if Bay himself said the 4th movie starts about 4 years after the events of DOTM, and they are going to be fliming in Chicago so that might add a little continity to the whole movie

This guy gets it.

A visual reboot. I Gaurantee that Hasbro has changes every last bot design from top to bottom. Sure the movie made a billion but the toy sales on the third movie sucked and Hasbro only cares about the toys.

Unless your real name is Brian Goldner, Aaron Archer or Michael Bay you can't possibly guarantee anything. With that said, I'd betcha the overall aesthetic from the first three films remains but the characters and detailing of the toys gets an update along the lines of leader Prime. He just kept getting better and better.
Zhadow
Reboot? I don't believe it. As Bay said; TF4 takes place four years later in the continuity.

Wahlberg isn't using the right word. A fresh direction is more like it.
Autobot Burnout
Until I hear Bumblebee isn't in this one, I can't say TF4 will be a reboot.
FatalT 71
We should only hope it's a complete reboot where the sins of past movies are forgotten.

Oh wait, Bay's still here. Continue the mediocrity

Maybe it's just a...remold. Badum ching. I'll show myself out thanks.

Well you don't know my real name sooooo....

Ok I can not gaurantee it but I am willing to bet on it.

This reboot/redirection is not the studio's idea it was Hasbro's idea. I'm not only expecting a whol enew group of bots but also a completely new look. If it is just new bots and old look then Hasbro just saved me another boatload of cash.

I look forawrd to a TF movie where I am enjoy the look of the bots and cons. Hopefully this is it.
kibble
From the human standpoint, yeah, it probably is fair to say it's a 'reboot'. If Megatron, Starscream, & co stay dead it's probably also fair to call it a 'reboot'. If people are expecting something other than Bayformers, though, you're probably going to be pretty disappoint.
Solrac333
Who cares?! It's Transformers and I'm gonna watch it.
charsdc2
Someone's f-ing lying!
Requiem Prime
I assume they are weaving a delicate ballet of non-commitment. That way people who did like the trilogy aren't pissed the prior continuity is done and people who didn't aren't pissed that shit is still going.
king_of_forgoten
If they wanted to go in a "New Direction" shouldn't they get a new director? Is it wrong that I want see the beginning of the war, it's escalation and have the third movie in the new trilogy end with them crash landing into Mt. Saint Hillary. or they can go from cyberton to the beast wars, or hell do Generation 2, straight from the comics.
gothsaurus
Well, if you have new actors... and you've been putting out the same characters and movie models for four years... something's going to have to change. You simply can't sell the same toys for a fourth movie. It's going to be a reboot... at least in its look/characters/actors/models/toys.
JoeHavok
"Reboot" is just a subjective adjective. It's Transformers 4. But, there is an all new human cast, and most likely a redesign of familiar bots, and all new bots. So, semi-reboot could be more accurate in my opinion. So why split hairs over this movie being called a reboot or not?
daitarn red
one of tfs said megatron find allspark and megatron turn earth in into new cybertron
i see stuintcons and arielbots in this movie
RedAlert Rescue
Reboot or not it will still be a representation of Michael Bay's character and so for that reason little will change.

If it is a reboot then Megatron will be not dead (but still ruined by the last movie) if it's not a reboot that raises issue too.

But then since I have no plans to see it I'm only really interested if it means yay or nay to a Movie Megatron toy. as I have no plans to watch the Movie until its on TV in 2016 or if I see a DVD at a car boot sale the events of the movie are only of passing interest with regard to how it effects the toyline that is based upon it.
jestermon
Great now Bay will fire him and reshoot it all with someone else, it would be neat if he's supposed to be Spike in the new one.

Watch the final movie will totally be called Transformers 4 total Reboot or Transformers Rebooted.

Wow Alber that would have been terrific if that was the original movie not kidding.
Saurocon
I think this is a case where Wahlberg isn't using the word the same way fans would use it. We hear reboot, and think same characters in a different universe (more or less), but it seems likely from what we know so far that Wahlberg meant something like "new trilogy of Bayformers"--something like how the original TF movie "rebooted" G1 season 3, where it happens in the same universe but in another section of that universe with radically different situations. Reboot in the sense of Abram's Star Trek, perhaps.
Aeronnz
I think its more of a fresh start than a "reboot."
Pcm979
Once again, people are getting overly excited by a single word uttered by someone on the spur of the moment. I guess this is just more proof that blind hope overrides pattern recognition every time.
Lazerwave
If it is a reboot I'm probably not going to watch it unless there are good toys.
daitarn red
rember megatron want turn earth in new cybertron like in key to vector simga mini saga
Bossguy
Why don't they just take out the swearing, inappropriate humans? Make the transformers fight on cybertron, WITHOUT ANY HUMANS.
jestermon
Actually I just saw Ted the other night if you replaced Ted with Bumblebee and people actually found out about the 8 year old having a talking car, like Knight Rider not knowing about the transforming part.

Introduced the Decepticons without anyone knowing about them.

Then replaced the pot/party scenes with Transforms missions/fights over the years in the picture scenes they showed to fill in between the years with Optimus holding up Decepticon faces like fish.

The love story between him and Kunis would have been a million times better than the original Transformers story, and you could have got AMrky Mark to take off his shirt a few times, this would have drawn in more females right here with a hidden decent chick flick in the movie as well.

Then meeting David Hasselhoff could have been who he went to see, after Bee scanned a building or something.

It had 2 crazy bosses, could omit Ted's job and make the creepy guy that wanted to steal Ted one of those people bots like the girl was in the second movie.

Man that's what Transformers should have been.

Reboot can mean almost anything from a "soft reboot" where there are only a few changes to "hard reboot" where almost everything changes. But even without a reboot you can still have drastically different films in a series like the Alien films or the difference between the first Harry Potter movie and the last Harry Potter movie.

Although I could see why parties connected to the movies would want some changes. Dark of the Moon toys didn't exactly leave retailers with a happy feeling toward Hasbro so Hasbro could really use a change in the look if they want to get Wal-Mart to order cases and cases of movie toys for each store. Dark of the Moon ticket sales in the US were down so Paramount might want something different if they don't have a decaying franchise on their hands.

Also I could see some need to save continuity if the movies had a deep story or complex characters, but nothing in the films seems worth any great effort to save.

The big roadblock to change seems like it would be Micheal Bay since he has not shown an ability to change since all his films are pretty much alike.
Girl Pants
I think it's quite possible that between Wahlberg, Bay, and the general fandom, we may have 3 different ideas as to what a reboot means. (Bay may also be doing his "misinformation" fun as well)

We know that most, if not all, of the humans are not returning. This could be how it is a reboot, as in a refresh of characters.
At the same time, we've heard the TFs are getting an update/change of some kind. Add to that the fact that most of them are dead, could lead to someone calling that a reboot.
And then of course is what we generally call a reboot, a reset in plot and the start of a new narrative/continunity.

Utlimately, the fact that there is a "4" in the teaser logo makes me think it will be at least loosely linked to the previous films.
Megastar
I'll believe that when I see a trailer.

hard to say he didnt get lazy from other hollywood directors would there own film movie title with 3d at end he didnt do it to transfromers 3d, as from saw 3d, resident evile 3d, many others that made third sequel with crappy 3d at end of every movie title have
bumblebeeprime2
so is this a reboot or a new trilogy ( 4,5and 6)?

and can you guys give me the link to this vid cause i try click on it and it does not work. do do you guys have it on Youtoube?
bellpeppers
If it picks up a few years after an incident established in the 1st 3 films, then it's a continuation.

If it starts over from scratch as if the other films never existed, then it's a reboot.
siccoyote
MICHAEL BAY IS STILL DOING IT

therefore

IT WILL NOT BE MUCH DIFFERENT

It's not a reboot
gokuz23
Since when is Transformers a "little movie" also what the hell Bay? Not a reboot is, it is a reboot you could at least just tell us the truth, and i realize how stupid that sounded but still

Depends on how you define "better". And if by better you mean a complicated, near masterpiece level toy that no 5 year old kid could even possibly hope to transform on his own.

The previous movie lines were already pushing that boundary line. A whole line of TFs designed with the same design philosophy as ROTF Leader Prime would be doomed to failure before it even began. The kids simply wouldn't want them because they can't transform them.

IMHO, if Hasbro is going for a design reboot, it'd be better to start making movie figs simpler, so the kids can actually transform and play with them. And do a seperate "Movie Masterpiece" line of super detailed and intricate transformation figs for the older kids and collectors.

It's far more likely that:

Mark Wahlberg is as familiar with the actual definition of "reboot" as most of the people on TFW2005 (meaning, not very)... or

Michael Bay knows that people such as those on TFW2005 clamor at every tiny tidbit of info on these movies, and got with Wahlberg and decided to troll at maximum levels by having him say "complete reboot" in interviews.
