Business Insider has posted an interesting article explaining how Hasbro decides which toys it will turn into movies and the profit they get in return.
With several more brands set to get the movie treatment in the next few years, we spoke with Hasbro Chief Marketing Officer John Frascotti to find out exactly how the company selects which of its toy lines get adapted to the big screen and how you can possibly turn a board game into a movie.“We look for those brands that have story and character at their foundation because inevitably for any type of storytelling format, whether it’s a movie, a television show, a digital comic … it has to have great story and great characters at it’s foundation,” says Frascotti.
All together, the “Transformers” franchise has brought in more than $2.5 billion worldwide. The two “G.I. Joe” movies combined have generated more than $600 million at the box office.
According to Reuters, it’s low risk strategy for Hasbro. The toy company pays around $1 million to develop script ideas and if a studio wants to go through with a film, Hasbro gets paid back the developing fee. After the film is in theaters, Hasbro reportedly receives 5% of the money a studio makes from theaters.
The article also states that following the success of the Transformers and other Hasbro brand movies, movies based on Jem And The Holograms, Magic the Gathering and Ouija are on their way to the Big Screen. You can read more at the Business Insider.

I bet the Battleship movie would've done better if they made it after a Transformers themed Battleship game. They could put Tidal Wave and Sea Spray in it

I want to make a comment about how the Illuminati's control Hollywood and they decide what gets made into a movie but I'm afraid they will hunt me down and kill me so saying so. Not really surprised that they are going to make two movies that have to do with the occult, witchcraft and black magic. Got to get the kids accustom to demonic symbolism as soon as they can.
If they are going to make a movie about Jem they should get Hannah Montana…I mean Miley Cyrus to play her. Wait a tick.

Hello all! First time poster LOOOONG time Transformers fan, so I wont make my first post a "hating on the Transformers movies" post, it's and age old message board battle between good and evil that has raged since even before I walked out of the first movie in disbelief that such mindless drivel could make so much money. Suffice it to say I have not seen 2, 3 or 4 and do not plan to.
Annnnyway, with that out of the way, that making money part i mentioned, that's all Hasbro are concerned about, it's all the ever have been concerned about, which is not a critisim, just a fact. So it's no surprise that the movies they've had made about their products reflect this. Notice that straight after he says "We look for those brands that have story and character at their foundation because inevitably for any type of storytelling format" he follows it with "All together, the "Transformers" franchise has brought in more than $2.5 billion worldwide. The two "G.I. Joe" movies combined have generated more than $600 million at the box office.". You dont even need to read between the lines here, he is simply saying, big budget blockbuster movies need to have some sort of narrative to make the big bucks. You know to link all the awesome explosions and action sequences! It doesn't have to be a good narrative, just something you can hang this stuff off. It's familiar territory for Hasbro, they've been commissioning back of the card copy, books, cartoons, comics, adverts, you name it, to sell their toys for as long as they can remember. It's a happy accident that some of it has been good, and unsurprising that a lot of it has been absolute nonsense.
